Additional comments :

  • No image states its fair use rationale though they should.
  • Various words such as NPC, RPG aren't defined though they should. It is also badly in need of wikilinks.
  • This The minimum possible point level scored when the dice is rolled in a statistic is four and the maximum is thirteen. When creating the character, the player can also choose from a limited variety of faces, hair styles, hair colors and skin colors. These can be modified only through the purchase of special coupons from the Cash Shop. needs a citation.
  • During the earlier levels, only a few minutes or hours of gameplay are required to level up. The higher a character's level becomes, the more experience points one needs to level up. This means that the higher a character's level gets the more time it takes to gain a level. When a character is level 70 or higher, it may take days or weeks to level up once. is the same for every game, so it shouldn't be that long to explain ... it should be cut down or original research may come as a problem.
  • From section Leveling up to Dying the article lacks citations and falls into an in-universe view of the game which is not acceptable for such an article. Many other sections fall into that category.
  • Can Versions and registration be axed down for it is really unimportant.
  • What about development, releases.
  • What about the interface, innovations in the setup.
  • What about earnings of the company making the game.
  • The article should cut down on the gameplay, story.

You can't make a stat go below four unless you use client-side hacks. As for hair styles, colours, and skin colours, I think the citation can point to the cash shop page of the official game. Nicknames(楓故事)

楓故事 is not the general nickname in Japan. It is no more than a name of one fan sight or the information sight.

Isn't 楓故事 kanji for MapleStory. And how come OMS appears in both kMS and gMS nickname section?Lancerex6 01:37, 29 October 2006 (UTC)

OMS is in both kMS and gMS because both of them are referred to as "Official MapleStory". This is inaccurate, however, because the first Maple was actually jMS. Ryuugaki 03:44, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

JMS isn't the first maplestory and KMS is. JMS is the second maplestory. - wkkim9292 01:25, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

"JMS isn't the first maplestory and KMS is. JMS is the second maplestory" First off, the first maple story was the korean version. The only reason why korea has a beta test server to test out all the new features from wizet, is because they are officially the first. I should know myself, I started playing in 2003 on KMS when JMS never even existed.

Cleanup

Hey, right now its 6:45 pm PST and i looked at your maplestory article. Someone is screwing around with your site. They put a bunch of Germany Nazi flags images, as well as a "maple story sucks!" comment. Please clean this up as soon as possible

I fixed this template and reported the user who was screwing with it; he is currently banned for a week. Tony Myers 01:22, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I accidentally removed this from my watchlist about a month back, and the page went crazy after that >.> I've tried to cleanup what I could but there are a few things left.

  1. I haven't gone through all the external links, but that section looks way too long. The non-English websites should be moved to their own languages.
  2. Criticisms section needs to be cleaned up and shrunk. Move all the junk to the MapleStory game issues page, since that page is already full of junk (I may get around to cleaning it up >.>).
  3. Get rid of some of the excessive headings. The ToC at the top is two screens long for me, which I feel is too long.

Finally, I archived this talk page cause it was getting waaay too long. -- Prod-You 01:42, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I agree with all three points.
  1. The external links has expanded and now looks like it did a few months ago, with all those separate language sections.
  2. The criticism section has grown since I last saw it -- the sections are pretty strange, too. "Boredom"? Wouldn't that eventually become an issue in every game? It should go back to how it was, and all the new stuff should go to the game issues page.
  3. The ToC is definitely stuffed up. Let's clear that nasal congestion and shrink it.
Kalani [talk] 00:54, 26 November 2006 (UTC)
Whats with all the non-English sites?! This is the English Wikipedia, for English readers. They contribute nothing more than the english sites already do. All the others belong at there respected languages Wikipedia's, not here. TheYmode 16:21, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

- Just so that you know el tardo, those sites are for ENGLISH READERS who play the different versions of Maple Story in different languages. Do a little research huh?

Criticism

I notice "Boredom" and yet there's no mention of the extraordinarily rude, cruel, and obnoxious player base, I've never played an MMO with even equally obnoxious and cruel users, shouldn't the unusual level of malignant behavior be mentioned in place of something as commonplace as Boredom?--Revrant 19:23, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Just add it if you feel like. But I don´t think it would fit in "Boredom". But you indeed got a valid point.
Well I meant that Boredom gets mention, something every MMO suffers from, and yet not the especially maligned attitude of the players here, not that they should be combined.--Revrant 19:23, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

Splitting Arcticle

This arcticle is just too long. I think that new arcticles entitled maplestory gameplay and maplestory items should be added. This is too in depth for a general game arcticle. However still keep in mind that this is not a game strategy guide. Redskunk 00:02, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Lists of items have, traditionally, been deleted (see, for example: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of weapons in Halo 2) so I would highly recommend against it. I would, however, suggest summarizing the gameplay section, as it is somewhat sprawling. Nifboy 06:05, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

True. The item section is somewhat long. However you are right. Would anyone like to take on the gameplay section. RedSkunk 18:55, 24 December 2006 (UTC)

Does TaiwanMS have Showa Mansion?

http://msfantasy.ioio.tw/ - A fan site for TaiwanMS, recently added info for Zipangu, and they did not include the Showa Mansion maps, nor the NPC that takes you to the Mansion. But they do show the mansion maps on http://msfantasy.ioio.tw/images/map/jp/all.PNG , but I don't understand what the pink box and pink text say. Also the bamboo forest (chungoo boss area) maps are in a pink box on that picture. -- Takiten 20:43, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

I don't understand Chinese or Taiwanese but I'm sure that TaiwanMS has Showa Mansion maps and Chungoo boss area because, in TaiwanMS official page, it shows anego(female boss) and a monster which is from Chungoo boss area in the main page. - wkkim9292 01:22, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

remove the bottom template

this template is orignally for maplestory worlds/character classes/game issues but all 3 article got deleted. now there's just 1 link to MapleStory DS which is already mention in the see also. other then that are 3 strategywiki links which are already mention in the article. this template just looks ugly and takes up space. 121.6.81.117 06:58, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

About the criticism section

There was a snippet about the MapleSEA site not working with browsers other than IE. I myself view it from firefox, so I changed is. Shmirlywhirl 22:01, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

I use Mozilla also, but the site only works in Internet Explorer for me. Change it back to what it was?

The game works fine. It is just registration that requires IE. The article text is misleading.

Are there any MMORPGs...

With more than 50 million users? If not MapleStory may just be the most populous MMORPG of all time. I just read that WoW has only 7.5 million, and RuneScape slightly ahead with 9 million. If it is true, this would prove this article a lot more worthy of existing. The Captain Returns 22:47, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

i don't think it would be 50 million users? Many people have more than one account, some have even more than 10... Also I think that Dungeons & Dragons would be more popular due to its seniority in comparison with Maple Story. In the MMORPG article, it says that there are 15 million people in total playing MMORPG games, how could Maplestory, alone, exceed that number?--|K.Z|Z.K| Do not vandalize... 08:15, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
To answer both questions, from the source cited in the latter article:
1. Why isn’t <MMOG_NAME> listed?
b) The game in question is free and/or doesn’t charge a regular monthly fee. Games like Furcadia, Magic: the Gathering Online, and Project Entropia are good examples; these games are normally free to play, but some players can also pay a variable amount to access additional content in the game. This makes it almost impossible to come up with a number comparable to monthly subscribers in other games.
-- Nifboy 00:20, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Even though its free, i still doubt that there's fifty million users. 10 million is possible but fifty million is double the whole population of Australasia. The south Korean MS says it has 17 million subscribers. Thats about a quarter of Korea's population. About half the korean population don't even have computers or internet access, and is it really likely that most of the people that have one plays maple story? --|K.Z|Z.K| Do not vandalize... 08:15, 20 January 2007 (UTC)
I honestly wouldn't doubt the 17 million subscriber estimate. I mean, this is the country that most say StarCraft is their national sport, and a quarter of their population is obsessed on a MarioKart-like game, Crazyracing Kartrider, another extremely sucessful Nexon game. The Captain Returns 23:27, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
Do u really think that over 80's and toddlers would play Maple? Seriously, Maple story is for the 10 to 30 years range of people. Has 17 million people in Korea heard about Maple? Not to mention the poor people who can't afford computers, those who don't have internet access and those who have better things to do than play games all day (not saying Maple isn't a good game). --Kzrulzuall 07:19, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
I'd have to say it is, but I'm a bit shocked by the people denying it, the game is free, and it's available in China, which makes up a large slice of it's user-base, it's similarly massive in Japan, where many of the real life clothing and food items are available for purchase. I've said this before and I'll say it again, MapleStory is ignored almost entirely by the gaming press, IGN, Gamespot, Gamespy, only recently have any of those three acknowledged it's existence.
The problem is sources aren't in english, the developers are Korean, and as a game it's not exactly thrilling or engaging, thus it's hard to get information on the game. Take into consideration that many people have more than one account, and we're probably looking at a bit under half that number for actual people playing this Worldwide. All the same, if the people here(Mostly Americans like myself) denying it could see just how massive this game is in China, Korea, and Japan, they would probably think it more likely. I don't see any way to prove this barring an official release from Nexon/Wizet though.Revrant 21:22, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Alright, it was I who put in the game population information. I know that the number of players is far lower than the numbers posted because many players have more than 1 account. However, I'm limited by Wikipedia's rules that all sources must be vertifable and the most "accurate" source is that site. I would like to decrease the number but that would mean breaking the rules. This is a weak point of Wikipedia, focusing on sources vertifable rather than common sense. The second weak point is that the community thinks online sources are better than others (e.g. books and magazines). They would rather see a bunch of crappy amateur websites than some printed materials. Sorry guys, I know the numbers aren't right but I am limited by the rules.

Virtual Tax

I was hearing that Maple story Taxes its players when buying items and stuff

Can a player that has bought stuff verify this? and if so is it possable to make a refrance to the virtual tax article

thanksMaverick423 17:33, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

The tax is applied when trading. If the meso traded is more that 50k, a 0.5% (I think, needs verification) of the mesos "disappears". The percentage increased with the amount of mesos traded. It's supposed to fight inflation or something. -- Prod-You 18:52, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

ah so a tax is present in the game then. cool do you think we should link the two articles? i can place in the VT article that the tax is present in maple story however where can we verify it? thats the only problem

The VT seems a bit different. In MS, the tax just disappears. But from what I understand from that article, the government wants real world money from the trades. I think it's slightly different, but I don't totally understand the VT... Also, please remember to sign your comments with ~~~~. -- Prod-You 21:57, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

yes the cash store uses real money to buy items on the game. basicly the government wants to wet its beak is all the VT article is saying. the fact that real money is used to get you the items and a tax is imposed at a certain buying limit like you stated (50k) then that in itself is a virtual tax. I admit that the article itself isnt complete however the people working on it (including myself) are looking to add more information to it soon. the only problems is finding the links. after all the evidance is there but the links arent. i guess we should put it off till the article is updated then if not then just make a quick refrence to it. Maverick423 00:26, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

The Tax is on in game items only, not cash items. It basically removes a portion of the mesos transferred from the economy entirely. They no longer exist. It's not going to the government. I don't think this fits into that article, in this case. I do think it's worth mentioning in the MS article that the tax from purchases in player shops bought from the Cash Shop is lower.Lunatio 15:16, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

It's supposed to counter inflation. But there're 2 sides of a coin. While they remove the meso from the community through player-player trades, the seller can demand for higher price before selling the same item to offset the meso lost through tax. OhanaUnited 07:00, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Thats not entirely true.. Think about it. Players kill monsters, and get money for it, thus bringing money or 'mesos' into the world, but there is no way for it to be removed. The amount of currency in the world just keeps rising and rising and rising, which is one of the major downfalls of MMORPG's, or any other game that handles money in this sense. The tax is designed as a way to reduce the amount of money in the world, thus fighting against inflation. But the method of reducing the amount of money typically ranges from dividing the trade into many transactions below the amount of 50k, resulting in no incurred taxes, or dropping 1 meso below the limit (as it is not a curve, as long as you are 1 unit below the tax limit, you will get the lower rate) Gpgarrettboast 05:10, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

Yes, there's a constant influx of money into the MMO economy, however mesos are removed via NPC purchases, though the frequency of this decrease as you progress through the game and the prices of items are usually fairly low in comparison to the amount present. Lunatio 15:16, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Don't forget about pots. At high levels, pot consumption may cost even more than equipments. And most pot money fell back to NPC. OhanaUnited 09:23, 20 February 2007 (UTC)

Protection?

I think Maple needs partial protection. If u look at the recent articles, there's so much vandalism and blanking. I might be wrong, but if we protect the page for a while, the vandalism will die down. Most of the vandals are ip addresses. With a few exceptions. Then again, the situation might not be serious enough for protection... --|K.Z|Z.K| Do not vandalize... 08:22, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

Thai Floating Market, does it have a minimap icon?

Anyone here play ThailandMS, or know how to extract images from the data.wz for ThailandMS? I was just curious if Thai Floating Market has a minimap icon or not, so that we may add it to the world/towns article. Or if anyone that plays ThailandMS, just go to the floating market, and maximize the minimap, take a screenshot and post it on imageshack or something, then we could just crop the icon out of the picture. But it is possible that there is no icon. I know KoreaMS doesn't use icons for Japan/China/Taiwan/Thailand continents/towns, but if there is a icon, it would only be ThailandMS. -- Takiten 21:24, 20 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm having trouble downloading the client. Is there an IP ban for downloading also, or is this related to the network problems they're having? -- Prod-You 16:43, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
It doesn't have minimap icon. http://img333.imageshack.us/img333/9918/maple10213vi.jpg PiPU 17:03, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
That's werid, that picture shows that the continent/road name is just called "Floating Market" and the Town name is "Floating Market"... The picture in the world/town section shows a minimized minimap with "Thai Floating Market" for both road and town names. Might need to change it unless something weird is just happening when you maximize the minimap. -- Takiten 18:18, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
Mini map icons and releasing the map can be done separately. When China MS first release Shanghai, it does not contain mini map icon. They only added it in recently. Same applies to Taiwan MS's night city. In a developer's mind, these icons are only symbolic and does not affect the game flow or cause glitches so they can release the icon with or after the map is being released to gamers.

IE for Mac proof

I predicted someone would change the Criticism section so it would say that IE for mac users CAN access the MapleStory Global website. I have proof that it doesn't:

--ÆAUSSIEevilÆ 00:22, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

I think the old workaround still works with ie mac though. Try disabling javascript, and it might let you through -- Prod-You 01:53, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Either C or C++. --Teggles 01:36, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
I can't be too sure, but some files that are associated with the game seem to be written with MS VC++ (the patcher, the setup program and a few others). I can't directly check the exe because they use ASProtect on it (some kind of protection program). -- Prod-You 05:27, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

If ThailandMS is getting Fish Catching...

Do they get Taiwan(Formosa) too? Because, when I saw a screenshot which shows an NPC from Night Market lets user do Fish Catching. - wkkim9292 21:17, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Doesn't get Formosa now and it's not a Fish Catching Game. It's a "Fishing System" that lets user fish in fishing map for exp, meso, and rare item. The fishing rod can buy from cash shop (8900 cash/89 baht for 30 days use). ThailandMS will got Amoria, Fishing System and MapleTV tomorrow. PiPU 09:38, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
Can you provide more info (like how many exp, meso, what type of item) you get from Fishing System? I wrote a guide on all types of MS mini-games so I need your help in providing me more info since I'm not going to install ThailandMS. Thanks. OhanaUnited 05:52, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

Anyone know if http://tw.maplestory.gamania.com/event/20070209/ind_1.htm is the fishing system or the fish catching minigame? Cause it looks like to me, that the Fishing System is coming out on TaiwanMS too. -- Takiten 19:00, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I looked at the link. Yes, I can confirm that TaiwanMS is getting Fishing System as well.

guild pq in orbis

new in maple global a orbis guild pq has been added i havnt explored it myself but its there i can't wait

and guilds the best guild is isleep in broa fear it

The guild pq is in perion, not orbis just to let ya know =)

Someone's just confused and mixed things up. There's a PARTY QUEST in Orbis (for some versions) and a GUILD QUEST in Perion. OhanaUnited 17:47, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

The guild pq (party quest) is deep within the city Perion. Yes, it is also in Orbis but also in Perion. If you just keep on going deeper and deeper, you will find skeleton-like creatures and a portals leading you to a safe area where the guild pq is.

MapleNoobs... again.

A little while ago (I don't remember how long ago) I suggested that maplenoobs.com be added to the list of links. I was told that it had to become widely used before it would be added. I believe with the amount of hits it recieves daily, it may be considered "widely used" by now. If not, I'd appreciate someone clarify how popular it needs to be. I'd really love to see the site added since I think it can actually make a difference in the gameplay of GMS. --TinDragon 19:03, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

http://www.maplenoobs.com/ is the website. I would say it's fairly notable (among MS fansites), at least according to alexa. So, is it worth adding to the page is the question. So far, most of the links provide information about the game, though this is for people who use the game. I guess it kinda shows the MS users desperation when it comes to hack users, but it doesn't really provide information for non-gamers. -- Prod-You 21:58, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
The site has been in direct contact with the MapleStory administrations and Nexon. the admin NXJoeW made visits to some of the more prominent maple sites, to get in more with the users. i think that makes it an important site, since they visited every other one listed there. However, i've never visited myself... IsaacGS 03:26, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
I disagree. Many users, including me, never heard of such a site. MapleTip's wiki is much more popular than this MapleNoobs. It lacks of a lot of contents too (other than about hacking users). OhanaUnited 03:36, 9 February 2007 (UTC)
Cancel this original message, thought you were talking about something else. xD However, MapleTip has chosen to link to MapleNoobs instead of using it's original hacker tracker. I'd think that holds a little meaning at least. :P --TinDragon 19:59, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Just wanna say, my bad on the inclusion of GPQ in that one section. As I understood it previously it would have been a PQ, but I went in today. GMS players migrating to SEA

Ok, im a wiki noob ok? Im sorry if I put this in the wrong section =( Lately, ive been noticing that whinney global players are complaining that maplesea is "so much better" than maple global. In fact, some people even go the the extreme of migrating from global to sea. I dont know if my idea is stupid, but I think you should add the fact that there are alot of imature global players migrating to sea just because there are supposedly "more areas" in msea.

Sources are: common knowledge. Im a basil user, and people on the forums as well as players in global are complaining that global is lower than sea. Consider posting this please, thanx =) —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 67.177.11.143 (talk) 06:21, 10 February 2007 (UTC).

50 Million?

Don't you think saying that there are 50 million players is quite unrealistic/misleading? It's quite hard to understand how you're trying to use it, does it mean that there are 50 million combined players ATM, or throughout the whole time its been around? could you just change it to something like "There are currently 50 million players who use the current versions."?--124.152.20.8 21:33, 10 February 2007 (UTC)

I saw this mentioned in an archive. 50 million is the total amount of accounts on the servers. Apparently, Wikipedia won't let you estimate lower because that is the actual amount of accounts, even though almost everyone has more than one. --TinDragon 01:59, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

Shang-Hai

I would like to take a minute of my time to introduse new characters to mapleSEA to the Shang-Hai map i would also like to know if this is on other versions to get to Shang-Hai you need one 1,500 mesos and a way to Kerning city the problem about Shang-Hai is that it is exclusivley high level and many of the weapons cost above 20,000 mesos. I took my time to tell many about this section of the game to warn and explain the caution of this area. The map starts in central area and goes to the right once the other way will take you to various *i dont know how much* areas with monsters like ducks rams sheeps monkeys and cows. The new version is harder to read and it is less attractive than the pervious version with the checks and the x's. I don't know what the person was thinking when they changed this. I would change it myself, but I simply don't know how. Can someone please show me how to change it or roll it back to the previous version? Thanks. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Cuongdawg (talkcontribs) 02:59, 27 February 2007 (UTC).

IMO, it makes it much more organized now, and much easier to update it. I say leave it as-is.

My question is, what to do once EuroMS starts picking up areas like Omega sector, so that the Area is now in every version of MapleStory. Do we remove that Area from the Chart? Or does it remain, with a yes in every box until some other new version sprouts..? IsaacGS 00:08, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Yes, that's why there's no Mapld Island or Victoria Island on the chart because every version has it. OhanaUnited 02:24, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Eurek quest?

I don't have MSEA so I can't say anything specific other than what I read in the changelog, but should this be added to the quest area in the content chart, or is this tied in with the legendary spirit skill? Scriptdaemon 22:06, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

It is tied with the Legendary Spirit Skill, which is already on the chart. -- Takiten 20:28, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

Vandalism

The entire page was deleted by The great rising sun. I reverted it. The guy seems to have done other vandalisms on Wiki. ~Entegy 01:21, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

He got blocked. But wait until he creates another account and start vandlising again... OhanaUnited 17:01, 11 March 2007 (UTC)

Picture Requests/Edits/Removals

This discussion applies to all of the PC MapleStory articles (1, 2, 3)

These articles, however many pictures they may have at the moment, are still lacking some key screenshots that I believe would illustrate the certain sections of the articles much better. There are also some pictures that I think could be replaced with better or more informing ones. Feel free to add to the list what you want, and if you'd like to contribute screenshots yourself (which would be greatly appreciated), check out Wikimedia Commons (http://commons.wikimedia.org commons.wikimedia.org). Be bold. The Captain Returns 00:20, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Picture Requests

  • Character at Beginner 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th job.
So, this is how it would work; five pictures of the same character, white background, horizontally aligned, maybe with the job advancement typed in a caption underneath each one, somewhat like this. In the beginner one, it would show the character's default beginner clothing, in the first job picture, it would show the character with 1st job armor, etc. The Captain Returns 00:31, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Suggested Picture Edits

A player engaging in the fighting element of the game.
This picture shows pretty much everything it should, attack animation, damage, and experience being gained. It would be even better cropped though. The Captain Returns 00:31, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Needs cropping.

I don't think any of these need cropping. They look fine the way they are. -- Prod-You 23:34, 15 February 2007 (UTC)

Suggested Picture Removals

Most of them. In particular, the cropped screenshots (Leveling up, dead character, monsters and boss, and the inventory window) seem to miss the "big picture" both literally and figuratively. Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a good illustration of how images are best used. Nifboy 03:40, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

I see what you mean. I'm removing the following images, since I don't think they add anything. -- Prod-You 04:07, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
