General guidelines

Anyone editing this page should read Wikipedia:WikiProject_Computer_and_Video_Games so that in the future, perhaps this article can join that project. -- Prod-Me 03:15, 27 September 2005 (UTC)

Anyone who wants to work on character or game guides should go to the wikibooks section at Wikibooks:MapleStory. The link is also at the bottom of the article in the External Links section.

Only Notable Fan sites and guides should be kept in the article. Small/new forums and guild websites do not belong. This isn't the place to advertise

Game issues section should only include factual information about existing scams, without including you avoid the scams. Also, please dont link to scam/hack websites.

Refer to sleepywood, hidden street and basilmarket for pricing information, it does not belong here since it is far too volatile and not encyclopedic

Title of Article

Should this be called MapleStory instead? On the game's website, it's always spelt without the space, and staff sign with "MapleStory staff" on the news. Enochlau 06:02, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Yea you are right. I looked through the website and it always refers to it as MapleStory. One thing to consider before changing the name is that the wikibooks link probably will break if the name is changed -- Prod-Me 12:08, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
That should be ok - we should be able to move the wikibooks article, or failing that, put a redirect in place. Enochlau 14:02, 2 October 2005 (UTC)
Done. Enochlau 14:09, 2 October 2005 (UTC)

Where do you get the idea that Str and Int increases HP/MP upon lvl up anyways?

Where do you get the idea that Str and Int increases HP/MP upon lvl up anyways? Did you compare the stats of a pure-str and high-dex Warrior? Same thing for luk-less Mage. HP/MP increments are based on the class and the skills. Comment by 72.142.162.31 moved from main page by fnfd 05:20, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

Well, it doesn't even work with a mage/warrior. It needs to be tested with beginners, which shouldnt be too bad. I guess I'll try it in a few days to figure out whether or not its true. Make two chars, note hp/mp at level one, go pure str with char that has less hp, int with other one. -- Prod-You 05:26, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Pure INT wizards/clerics only have about 150 more MP at level 50 than someone with a normal LUK build, so you might not notice any difference with a beginner. --PetteriH 10:38, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
Wont that be assuming that everyone wants to stay as a beginner?
Well, if its true for a beginner, I'd think its fairly safe to assume its true in general. -- Prod-You 21:53, 25 February 2006 (UTC)
I already said look at the pure-str and high-dex Warriors and luk-less Mages. Then you go say if it works for Beginners it works for all classes.
Plus, you said "Well, it doesn't even work with a mage/warrior."
I dont get your reasoning.
Hmmm, you're right. What i meant to say is, with warriors and mages, they have the skills that increase mp/hp and its better if those aren't included in consideration since results would only apply to those two classes. Anywayz, until its at least tested with beginners i dont think theres a point to arguing. Oh, and to sign your comments, put four tilde's (~) at the end, just easier to see whos commenting rather than checking history. -- Prod-You 00:28, 26 February 2006 (UTC)
Oh.
Try Str Dit and Luk Dit. 72.142.162.31 21:17, 28 February 2006 (UTC)72.142.162.31
Basically for every STR or INT you have, you will gain one extra HP/MP for each point every time you level up.Runescape rocks 05:47, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
Please supply SS proving this. Or better yet, post your theory at SW.net. 69.192.111.9 12:33, 27 March 2006 (UTC)69.192.111.9

oMS

Should the abbreviation for GlobalMS really be listed as both gMS and oMS?

gMS = GlobalMS oMS = OfficialMS

Every version is technically the "OfficialMS" for its specific country/countries. So, should we include it or not? Kalani [talk] 20:34, 18 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree, oMS could mean any version depending on the person interpeting it. Typer525 Contact 21:47, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
Well, were telling how its commonly refered to. I don't really hang out on the boards anymore so I'm kinda out of touch now. Do people commonly use oMS? If yes, then it should be there irrespective of how "clear" it is. If its rarely used, then it shouldn't be there. -- Prod-You 22:43, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
I use oMS and gMS. They both refer to the same one anyways.
The forums I goto, they dont get technical and say oMS is actually jMS in Jap, etc. I agree technically, 'offical' does mean...well, offical. But people refer to oMS as gMS and vice versa. You can try to force people to use gMS but chances are it'll end in confusion. Plus, I doubt Japanese/Koreans come to English wiki.
mSEA calls it mSEA. Not oMS. 69.192.111.9 04:42, 19 April 2006 (UTC)69.192.111.9

Image requests

Here is a list of images that need to be improved, or that need to be added. Discussions about whether or not to have a certain picture, and what should be in it are welcome.

New Players
Picture of the starting screen, preferably with no name entered
Wow that was quick :P. After rereading this i realized it isn't clear what i meant. Was referring to the dice roll stat allocation page. -- Prod-You 22:44, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Monster
Images without other people in it, perhaps taken from the wikibooks:MapleStory/Monsters page, same for the Mushmom pic
You mean, just an image of the monster, without any players? With or without damage on it? Backround or no backround? --Bobadot 09:17, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, i like the pictures on the monsters page, but I would also like it to show the background so i can get an idea of the environment. -- Prod-You 18:08, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
How's this one displaying some horned mushrooms? --Bobadot 19:41, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Well, the ones im referring to are the "boss" pictures (sorry i wasn't clear....maybe i should stop editing after midnight :P). i feel there are enough regular monster pics and people like seeing the boss pics which i think need to be changed so that theres nothing apart from just the monster and the background. So yes, i like the pic you put up, just of a different monster :P. --Prod-You 06:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
I changed the mushmom and king slime pics. Unfortunately they are the plain pictures with no backgrounds. If someone can get actual screenshots of them without any attacks hitting them or other enemies in the way that would be great. -- Prod-You 04:45, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Party Quests
Image of the standing on barrels part perhaps, not sure about this one
File:Ludipq1.jpg
File:Ludipq2.jpg
I can so get this. I have so many screenshots of party quests. --Bobadot 09:17, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
You can post up a few pics you think would be helpful here, and we can pick between them. I just feel the "CLEAR" kinda blocks out anything useful in the picture. -- Prod-You 18:08, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
I found so many..take your pick, really. --Bobadot 19:41, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Well I picked one and added it to the main page, removed the options from here cause they take so much space :P. Here's an archive with the pics still there. -- Prod-You 05:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
I got 2 screens from the ludi pq.. might want to put one to the left of the ludi pq section. here are the two: --Froth 04:51, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Jumping Quest
Image of someone in a jumping quest
You think so? You can't really show the spirit of a jump quest in a screenshot. It's a very animated thing. I don't think we need a screenshot of them, it's hard to show all that in a still picture. --Bobadot 09:17, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
True, with lasers everywhere and things like that which are very dynamic :P I was mainly thinking about John's first, where there is very little happening. Just show a character in the middle of a jump from one platform to the next. It will show that the platforms are slow, and if you miss a platform you fall down. -- Prod-You 18:08, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Security
Image of the keypad for security pin
I've added a pic of the login screen with no name as well as a dead character with a thought bubble. Kalani 22:46, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
I'm interested in possibly having a screenshot of some glitches in the game. Want me to show some of the ones I have? --Bobadot 19:41, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
I don't think ive seen any glitches so far, so i'd be interested to see what they are. However, keeping that section up to date would be annoying cause they could fix these glitches at any time. Well, the only glitches i know of are when alt+tabbed out of game and then back in a while later, a lot of attacks show up on screen all at once, or when you check someones info as theyre leaving the screen stuff messes up there. So, personally id be interested, but i dont think it woul dbe useful for the article. -- Prod-You 06:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)
It's definately inappropriate for this article. and that screenshot.. you shouldnt be in orbis at that level anyway 0.o --Froth 04:04, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Well, I have genuinely only one real glitch screenshot, and it's caused by hanging on a ladder, being able to be hit by Jr. Sentinels above me, and getting hit by one and dying - but then the screen suddenly cuts to here, there's a press OK to be revived, I'm not on what I can see in the minimap, and there's this weird barcode-looking thing.
File:Maplestory glitch1.jpg
Someone added the PIN pic to the new game issues page so that one's done. About the pic u put up I don't see the barcode thing, or am i just blind :P. -- Prod-You 05:21, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
Misc
Although the maplestory.com navigation bar was out of place in the article, the block of unbroken text its departure has left in its wake is daunting. Suggestions for something more appropriate to put there? --Froth 20:32, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

this page is so huge :D

one of the largest -if not the largest- game article on wikipedia

it's very thorough too, and isn't too crufty

Crufty? Never heard that word before :P. I'm glad you find it....er... pleasing to the touch -- Prod-You 06:03, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

cruft is low-quality, very specialized information that nobody cares about except a few people. for example, a record of the latest rumors flying around about a forum's administrator on the article about the forum would be forumcruft. the term isnt used often but I like it :) anyway, it's a familiar idea and it's typically edited out of articles without thought. --Froth 20:24, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Comments/Suggesstions

I'd say get rid of the stuff about "game guides suggest" as that is kinda irrelevant and easily found in...a game guide -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Cleaned that part up a bit. -- Prod-You 05:24, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
It's part of the game and a very commonly used "feature". -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
So is the rest of the keyboard configuration, but there's little reason to give that its own table. Any user can click "key setting" to see exactly what each function key does. the "nicknames" are useless, leaving you with a lacking two row table filled with information of already-tenuous usefulness. A brief sentence contianing words like "a variety of facial expressions" would be sufficient. Think of it from the average "random article"-surfing wikipedian's perspective. "what the? .. thats unusual - a table about the default key bindings?" and that's what they are- the defaults. many users change them so they dont have to hunt around the letter keys to find the "guild" and "party" and "equipment" menus. at the very least mention the word default.--Froth 20:37, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
However, these emoticons are somewhat unique to MapleStory. But yea, i guess we should get rid of the keybindings, and the nicknames are kinda useless and are prone to getting changed every other day. So yea, i guess shorten it to two sentences or so would be best. -- Prod-You 22:48, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
I disagree with getting rid of it completely. Perhaps convert it into a paragraph of prose rather than a listing? -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
I would hesitate even to give it a paragraph. It's a very minor thing, and only a small percentage of users participate in them. It's an interesting read, but I'm not sure it has the significance needed to appear in the article, not to mention consume the enormous amount of space that it does. --Froth 20:29, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Heh, i dunno about it being minor. Any time i tried to participate the whole channel lagged so bad my comp couldn't handle the game and crashed :P.
I would think that a paragraph would be sufficient. Along with the events, there seems to be a lot about minigames, which I'm not sure is appropriate considering no one in MS ever seems to play them except when they're reeeeeaaallly bored. I think that could be condensed into a small paragraph as well. I also noticed that minigames are mentioned and even described in the opening paragraphs of the article, which seems to suggest that they are an important part of the game (which really isn't true). Can that mention of minigames in the second paragraph of the article be removed/revised? SamanthaPr 16:46, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
I minimized the minigame mention in the opening and got rid of the headings in the minigames section so it would be a bit shorter. It can probably still be shrunk a bit. After looking at the events section, i see that it does need rearranging at least. Some of the "sections" are one line long. Perhaps rather than going into details about the events one by one, we could discuss the types of minigames, and give the specific ones as examples. I haven't tried the quests so I'm not too sure what a good grouping would be, or if there are even any new quests. -- Prod-You 02:03, 4 May 2006 (UTC)
It's one of the older sections, I'm glad you like it. -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
  • The PQ section is wayy too long. the last paragraph can be cut, and the 1st and 2nd paragraphs can be rewritten to be shorter, but with the same basic info --Froth 04:25, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Are you referring to before or after your edits? If before, i definately agree, if after, i'll have to reread what you wrote. -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
  • i revised the cash shop section.. it was sounding like a 12 year old wrote it (jab only partially intended Kalathalan)
  • some screenshots struck me as sloppy. the Jane Doe, King Slime, Curse Eyes, Map, Power Strike, and "screenshot of the game in action" are all very good screenshots. However the maplestory.com menu bar is completely unnecessary (there's a table just below it with all that information). The maplestory logo at the top is good, but it could use a few-pixel trimming at the top. the ranking system shot is sloppy. The dead character shot is a bit too informal for the article, and it'd be nice to get a shot of a dead character in a better environment, for example around Lith or Heneseys, both of which have nice high-contrast backgrounds. Also wear a hat when you die so it's clear that stays on. And say something better, perhaps addressing the reader of the article. for the mushmom pic, i'd cut off the mage on the left and just show mushmom. the section's about her, and anyway the rectangular shape is squishing her so you can barely see her. make a more squarish image out of it so she can fill the space. It'd be nice to get a pic of zakum on its natural background too, especially if it's not being attacked at the time. The PQ shot should be redone too. --Froth 04:25, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Ummm....can you add that into the image requests section? -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Agreed, and it would also be nice to have a bit more variety in the screenshots. What I see now is mainly warriors and mages, and no higher-level characters (i.e., 50+). At least one 3rd job character might be good. And maybe a screenshot of FM? The reason I'm not putting those ideas in the image request section is to make sure other people agree with them first. SamanthaPr 16:46, 23 April 2006 (UTC)
Hey, my ludi pq screenshot is of an archer :p but I agree at least that we need a screenshot of a high-level character. A level 8x mage maybe, they look awesome o_o --Froth 23:32, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
Image requests section should hold the discussions as well, just because its in that section doesn't mean it will be put up. It's just for the sake of organization. -- Prod-You 17:02, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Please address these points at your leisure --Froth 04:25, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

Finally, someone else participating on this talk page..... -- Prod-You 06:14, 19 April 2006 (UTC)
Hey!! I would participate more if there weren't so many vandals/idiots editing other pages. I am pretty much a fact checker/vandalism fighter now...BORING but it must be done. Typer525 Contact 15:04, 20 April 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks for your suggestions. ^^ I was gonna mention some stuff myself, but was too timid, being a Wikipedia noob and all... *hides* But this is great. SamanthaPr 16:46, 23 April 2006 (UTC)

Archives

I've just re-modeled the archive links and converted them into subpages (current discussions on this page were removed from /Archive_2). I also added an archive box (Template:Archivebox), to make it cleaner instead of the two links that were barely visible (no offense to the person who did them). Kalani [talk] 01:03, 1 May 2006 (UTC)

Looks much better now. I wasn't sure how else to put up the archives, this is a much cleaner solution. -- Prod-You 16:49, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
