[edit]- For the record, here is the news blurb that made en.wiki main page news: "Amid an outbreak of tornadoes and derechos in central and eastern North America, a tornado hits a Boy Scout camp in Iowa, killing four."... — Rlevse • Talk • 22:27, 12 June 2008 (UTC)
Notability
[edit]With all due respect to the deceased, is this notable for reasons beyond the tornado hit? --Christopherlin (talk) 03:32, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, and as time goes on, even more info about it will be coming out. There are several articles on council level Scout camps like this one, right now it's just that the focus is on the tornado. I also think this is very well documented makes it notable. Larry King spent 30 minutes on this last night. I'm also sure that many heroism awards will be forthcoming as all reports on the behavior of the Scouts and Scout Leaders have been very complementary. I do agree the non-tornado side of the article needs work, please allow time for that. — Rlevse • Talk • 09:59, 13 June 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, for two reasons: 1 The acts of bravery by those present 2. the controversy surrounding whether or not Scouting (boys and girls) camps in the area should have tornado shelters. Nice or in evil (talk) 20:13, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
External links section
[edit]Would it be ok to add an external link to the Boy Scouts of America Disaster Relief Fund? --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:12, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Lloyd Roitstein
[edit]I'm putting the "Absolutely not" quote by Roitstein back in the article this time with support. My understanding is that Roitsteins comments as well as apprent his lack of support for building tornado shelters at Scout camps is part of the controversy. Nice or in evil (talk) 21:43, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
- It's okay now because you now have a ref, it was not in the ref I found, that's why I took it out. But please format your refs properly, I fixed this one. — Rlevse • Talk • 21:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC)
Great Job
[edit]I know that this has nothing to do with the article but I just want to say that those guys did a great job. I am a Boy Scout in Texas and just want to express my congratulations to the other boys up there that had to act fast and look after each other, and my condolances to the families of the boys that didn't make it. I think that Boy Scout training is underrated sometimes but it is situations like this one where it is really valuable. Also, I will have to find a link but I believe one of the boys was quoted in saying that it was better that it happened to Scouts rather than somebody else. "A Scout is Brave." Heroism awards
[edit]I'm sure there'll be heroism awards coming out of this. When they're actually awarded, we need to add them and please let me know. I plan to make this a selected article on Portal:Scouting at that time. — Rlevse • Talk • 11:29, 29 June 2008 (UTC)
- Just found one to add. If anyone finds more, please add. — Rlevse • Talk • 23:23, 29 September 2008 (UTC)
