Conversion to table format
[edit]Per request, I've started the following. The filenames are made of those funny codes. I hope that's okay. If you'd like a last column for references, I think I can do that. I haven't filled in the Associated regions column because I wasn't sure if that was what you all wanted. Please advise or take it from here. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 01:46, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

- N.b. The long table that was previously listed here on this talk page (diff) has been moved to the article. North America1000 02:39, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- Anna Frodesiak Thanks very much for performing the work! I think it looks great, and is a significant improvement, so I have updated the article with this content. I think it's fine without another column for references. Pinging mudwater to let them know. North America1000 01:56, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- You are most welcome. And okay, no ref col. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:01, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
@Northamerica1000 and Anna Frodesiak: Very nice! But, do we want the images to be in the first column and the names in the second column? — Mudwater (Talk) 02:04, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
Actually I'd probably be happy either way. — Mudwater (Talk) 02:06, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- I think it would look fly with the image listed first, such as the format at List of regional dishes of the United States. However, this would create more work... North America1000 02:11, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- You pick, I'll do. I can do it automatically in seconds. Just say the word. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 02:18, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Anna Frodesiak: I'll second the motion of NA1000. Images in the first column please! — Mudwater (Talk) 02:21, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- @Anna Frodesiak: Wow, if it's that easy, then I don't feel so guilty . "The word" (to have images first...) Thanks again! North America1000 02:47, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

- @Anna Frodesiak:Mudwater also stated a preference on my talk page for having the image in the first column (diff). North America1000 03:32, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
@Anna Frodesiak and Northamerica1000: Once Northamercia1000 fixed the talk page markup, I was able to get at the second version of the table provided by Anna Frodesiak, and put that into the article. So now the images are in the first column. Thanks to both of you for your work on this! — Mudwater (Talk) 04:59, 8 July 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks to all for the wp:collaboration! North America1000 05:04, 8 July 2016 (UTC)

Donuts?
[edit]What about sweet stuff, is it "street food"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.138.39.62 (talk) 09:40, 20 July 2016 (UTC)

Regions
[edit]I'm fine with the regional sorting but users are more likely to sort by country. Can we at least set rules on order? For example, when there are multiple areas, they are always in alphabetical order. Food A - Middle East, South America NOT South America, Middle East.Correctron (talk) 22:45, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- Could we even just have separate lists for each continent?Correctron (talk) 22:46, 3 August 2016 (UTC)
- I think we're better off with one big list. For one thing, some items are popular street foods on more than one continent. And as far as listing locations alphabetically within a list entry, I think it's better to list them in order of importance -- for example, "Turkey, Germany, and elsewhere" for doner kebab. I think sorting by region is a plus -- so for example "India (Northern)" might be better than "Northern India", even though it's slightly awkward -- but it's not the most important thing, so we shouldn't go overboard, so to speak. @Northamerica1000: what do you think? — Mudwater (Talk) 01:28, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
- The entire point of a table is to make it easy to find information. Correctron (talk) 22:43, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
- I'm for one list at this time, rather than splitting out new articles. As above, some foods are street foods on multiple continents. However, if the list does become too long (it is getting somewhat lengthy), I would prefer spinout articles by type of food (e.g. bread-based, meat based, sandwiches, sweets, etc.), rather than geographic locations. I think listing by significance in the Associated regions section is working out, whereby the region in which a dish is most common is listed first. Also of note is that the use of sortable list formatting helps out for people to customize how they want to view the article. North America1000 01:03, 5 August 2016 (UTC)
- @Northamerica1000: I really think we would want to keep this as one article -- even if it was decided to break up the list into multiple tables by type of food. Of course, any major change to the structure of the article should be discussed here first anyway. — Mudwater (Talk) 10:52, 6 August 2016 (UTC)
- Yeah, I'm fine with keeping it as one. If this were to become crazy long, then it could be split, but not needed at this time. Splitting also makes the content more difficult to access compared to a one-page format. North America1000 20:18, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

A kapsalon and kaassouffle are not street food.
[edit]Allow me to explain. A kapsalon being kebab dish and requiring an oven is certainly not a street food. I highly doubt anyone is actually selling this on the streets as the kebab comes from a rotating spit.
And for that matter, Kaassoufflé's aren't really a cultural and dominant street food either. It's not like we in the Netherlands go around and predominantly order kaassoufflés at stands or food carts... — 2001:981:9B5E:1:D062:905A:580:339C (talk) 09:27, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- Speaking generally, it would be ideal if each entry in the list had a reference saying that it was a street food, and it seems to me that most of them already do, though probably not all. Note also that we are using the term "street food" in a pretty broad sense here. It doesn't have to be something sold from a push cart or a food truck. It could also be something sold from a permanent stand, or from a small building or storefront without its own restaurant seating. Northamerica1000, any thoughts on this? — Mudwater (Talk) 23:24, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
- This source states that kapsalon is a street food in Russia.
- This source states that kaassouffle is a street food in the Netherlands.
- Looks good to me. Thanks. — Mudwater (Talk) 23:05, 17 August 2016 (UTC)
