The name of this page is misleading

[edit]

I was searching for lists of alternate names of regions (or other locations) and cannot find that information anywhere. This page had my hopes up, but turned out to be alternate names for people from a region. I have searched using the terms 'nickname', 'alias', 'a.k.a', 'alternate names', and 'alternative name'. Is this something I should set up (for regions, states, or cities) or add to the first page listed below (for regions)? I'm new to Wikipedia and just trying to find my groove. Helpful advice would be welcomed.

The closest pages I found include: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_alternative_country_names https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicknames_of_Houston https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cities_and_towns_in_Andhra_Pradesh_by_nicknames https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lists_of_cities_in_Europe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Latin_place_names_in_Africa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_names_of_European_cities_in_different_languages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatick_Region (has a reference to alternative name for the region)

Bluenose

[edit]

A Bluenose is a derogatory term for a supporter of Glasgow Rangers Football Club. At Least according to Supporters of City Rivals - Glasgow Celtic Football Club. And also a surporter of Birmingham City Football Club in England.

- Let's not forget Everton fans, according to supporters of Liverpool FC. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Testflacon (talkcontribs) 15:46, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Edit to "Cheesehead" and addition of FIB (fucking illinois bastard)

[edit]

Some editor improperly deleted it

[edit]

Who's the "thought police" out here? This is ridiculous.

I added some constructive language to "cheesehead" and further added to the context in which people from Wisconsin actually wear the "cheesehead" slur with pride by wearing cheese on their head, especially during sporting events. How in the world is that not constructive?

Furthermore, I added "FIB" - "fucking illinois bastard." To anyone who has ever been at sporting event for a Wisconsin/Illinois rivalry (esp. baseball or football), this term is heard in the stands all the time. And it's heard beyond sports as well, in everyday language as well.

To the "thought police" - put these back in or I'll add them back in myself. They were CONSTRUCTIVE, were written with proper grammar and syntax, and were brief and to the point.

Comments anyone?

This article needs a lot of citations

[edit]

I have marked a few items with a fact tag, I will later look for the citations. If I cannot find citation I will be removing entries in line with our verifiability policy. Any entries I remove I will move to the talk page for further attempts at finding citations. Lets see if we can make this article accurate and verifiable. Hopefully we can get this article as well sourced as List of companies of India or List of Romanian actors. Chillum 14:25, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Of the first 5 I found citations for 4. "Boricua" however I could not immediately find a reliable source for, just forum postings and domain names and such. I will look again later, but if someone beats me to it all the better. Chillum 14:54, 14 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bogan, Australian term for working class in the Melbourne area, believed to stand for "Boys Of Grenveille And Northern Suburbs." Used recently as part of the title for an AU TV show "Upper Middle Bogans."

Addition of "Lower 48" into list

[edit]

"Lower 48" is a term used heavily by Alaskans to refer to the contiguous United States. Since Alaskans don't have a regional nickname, this could serve as some representation. The addition could be added in context with the other nicknames listed, or in the "See Also" section. There is already a Wiki article about the term that can be linked to and cited from the list item, which I will include below.

Potential merge with List of adjectival and demonymic forms of place names

[edit]

This page overlaps heavily with various other pages collating demonyms, particularly List of adjectival and demonymic forms of place names. Considering the degree of overlap between the demonyms listed here and those listed in the above-mentioned page and related pages, I suggest the (verifiable) demonyms listed here be merged into that page, perhaps with footnotes qualifiying those that are insulting or limited in usage to a particular region or dialect, as indicated by the information in this article. Indigopari (talk) 22:20, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose, as the scope of the lists are different, in the same way demonyms differ from nicknames and Category:Lists of demonyms differs from Category:Lists of nicknames. Klbrain (talk) 13:14, 29 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose, per above. Libcub (talk) 06:30, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Yellowhammer

[edit]

The disambiguation page for Yellowhammer leads here but the term is not mentioned on this page. 80.146.120.57 (talk) 07:41, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like it was removed in 2019 in this revision by an IP user . Looks like it might have been because of a deadlink. Delvethedragon (talk) 05:18, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
