Please change the line "Homophobia – fear/dislike of homosexuality, homosexuals, or gays (as opposed to lesbians)" to "Homophobia – fear/dislike of homosexuality, homosexuals, or gay people (as opposed to lesbians)".
Reference to gay people as "gays" is outdated language and often considered offensive. Thank you. Reddie133 (talk) 18:10, 3 July 2020 (UTC)
- Not done for now: I don't see the difference between "gays" and 'gay people" (especially not in this context were the next word is "lesbians"). This seems like hair-splitting to me; no change required. RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 19:15, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Can someone please add 'Onomatophobia' into the list?
Onomatophobia is the fear of hearing a certain word or of names. Onomatophobia is considered to be a specific phobia, which is discussed on the Phobia Types page. Onomatophobia is also related to Nomatophobia (fear of names), Logophobia and Verbophobia (which both mean the fear of words) . — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yssn (talk • contribs) 12:42, 10 October 2020 (UTC)

"Triskaidekaphobia" misspelled as "Triakaidekaphobia"
Sabujakimobusa (talk) 10:31, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
- Not an error. That was the spelling in an 1897 publication. The use of a {{sic}} tag could be discussed, but "tria"/"tris" is not much of a debate topic. A comment in the text already indicates the verbatim nature of the quotation. BiologicalMe (talk) 03:47, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
Add Kosmemophobia to the list of phobias
Please add kosmemophobia to the list of phobias. This phobia is becoming more and more recognised and something I also suffer from. Ithas a subreddit dedicated to it with over 500 members. It is often described as the fear of jewellery, although it extends to many more things, usually metal, intricate objects. (such as coins, patterned cutlery, keys) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Onetyfour (talk • contribs) 15:28, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
I second this request. In fact, I think it deserves its own page. A lot is known about kosmemophobia compared to most phobias. [article] on the Phobia Wiki explains it well. (I wrote most of it. Most Phobia Wiki editors are trolls, but I think I made a good article.) — HopHoppipHarvest (talk•contribs) — Preceding undated comment added 18:50, 17 June 2021 (UTC)
Article scope (psychiatric phobias are distinct from other types)
This article seems to be talking about several different things at once, and while it does include what one would expect to find in a list of this sort (psychiatric phobias), it also includes things that one would not expect to find here. I suggest that most of the other sections be moved elsewhere.
Those pertaining to prejudices are already largely (if not entirely) covered by List of anti-cultural, anti-national, and anti-ethnic terms, and leaving them in this article could be seen as offensive (implying those that are intolerant are merely fearful, rather than hateful).
Meanwhile, the scientific terms which make use of the suffix -phobia could easily be moved to a page at -phobia – akin to -phoresis – if they are to be kept at all.
The medical phobias should either stay, or be moved along with the scientific ones. I am unsure exactly where to send the cultural/historical terms of "Cultural phenomena", but perhaps it could stay, at least for the moment (worth noting that Lipophobia is a redirect anyway). And the jokes/fictional phobias are clearly related to the idea of psych phobias and should stay. — HTGS (talk) 08:11, 29 June 2021 (UTC)

Add Prosopotikophobia to list of phobias
As far as I'm aware, this is a pretty rare one, but I do suffer from this and I've seen some other people who have it, too. Prosopotikophobia (prosopo, meaning "face," and tiko, meaning "melt") is the fear of melting faces. I'm currently working on a website that will provide helpful info on it and a movie warnings list for sufferers and their loved ones, but it's not quite ready yet.
Anyway, I've suffered from this phobia for over 14 years as of writing this, and only recently coined the term because I didn't see it anywhere and didn't want to google the definition for fear of being triggered, so I feel like it would really help a lot of people to be able to find it in a phobias list. LoveYouForever96 (talk) 10:07, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- Two things:
- 1) I'm not the person to listen to when it comes to Ancient Greek, but your fear might be better named 'liomenoprosopophobia,' as 'tiko' doesn't mean 'melt.'
- 2) We'd need one or two sources for this, and I doubt there are any that could be considered reliable. A quick glance through Google shows nothing, but maybe there are RS for this? IDK.
- Just out of curiosity, would you be afraid of merely distended/distorted faces, like The Scream, or does it need to be full-on melting, à la Raiders of the Lost Ark? Joe (talk) 13:03, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- Well, my fear technically stemmed from the evil lair/lab scene from Agent Cody Banks, which I've been told isn't necessarily "melting" (more like crinkling, which is a lot milder than melting, but still gross); I guess I mistook that for melting because of the fact that they say the word melt in reference to the ice cubes storing the nanobots responsible for killing the villain - and I've also seen other people on the internet describe what happened to him as melting
- but yeah, I am also afraid of the Raiders of the Lost Ark scene, so melting is the appropriate word for it
- my mom was actually the one who came up with "prosopotikophobia" 'cause google told her that tiko means "melt," but thank you for informing me of the correct root word! LoveYouForever96 (talk) 19:32, 30 May 2021 (UTC)
- Is it okay if I put screenshots here of comments I've seen where people say they are afraid of this, or are photos of any kind not allowed for obvious reasons? LoveYouForever96 (talk) 04:48, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- Screenshots are fine, make sure you're using something that's in the commons or, if you're uploading something, something that doesn't violate Wikipedia's terms for copyrighted material. Joe (talk) 08:38, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- @JoePhin: As has just been pointed out to LoveYouForever96 at the Teahouse, it is not appropriate to recommend uploading screenshots of YouTube comments, as usergenerated content has absolutely no value or usefulness here - not to mention the possible legal issue of copying other people's writings. So please don't recommend this as a solution to support a WP:NEOLOGISM that has yet to be reported in any reliable medical source. Wikipedia is not a place for publicising made-up names, no matter how disconcerting any esoteric phobia may be to the individual who experiences it. Nick Moyes (talk) 22:47, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
- Okay, so since I can't have this added to the article right now, how exactly do I go about legitimizing this as a specific phobia without presenting it as original research? I know other people have the phobia, too, but idk how many out there are willing to go to the lengths of getting it recognized, so I feel kind of alone in this effort. Add Tristophobia to list of phobias
Fear of being sad or fear of sadness. Tristophobia (from Latin tristis, "sad"), also known as maestophobia (from Latin maestus, "sad") is the fear of sorrow and sadness. Tristophobia is also a fear of related emotions (but not limited to), grief, distress, despair, and disappointment. Since these are negative emotions, they are prime triggers of tristophobia.

I had a difficult time understanding this sentence, "Sometimes it leads to bizarre results, such as suggestions to cure "prostitute phobia".[2] Such practice is known as content spamming and is used to attract search engines." Fear of sinking into the floor and fear of everything melting?
Is there a name for this? This does not involve heat or hot weather. I've always had a fear of sinking into the floor like slow quicksand, merging into solid objects like the "Philadelphia Experiment" rumors or everything melting like a bad acid trip or the "Star Trek Voyager" episode "Course: Oblivion". I've had nightmares about falling into the floor or absorbed into the walls since I was a kid in the 80s (I'm 38). I also suffer from the similar but video game related "Verzephobia" [1], again falling through the ground, texture/modelling glitches really gross me out. The visual effect of "Mirror Georgiou" in "Star Trek Discovery" suffering from time/dimension hopping effects was disturbing.207.112.55.242 (talk) 16:35, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- I don't have any experience with the fear of sinking into the floor - but as far as the fear of everything melting, I tried to add a similar and more specific phobia to the list, but it didn't work because it was a WP:NEOLOGISM. The phobia in question is liomenoprosopophobia (previously known as prosopotikophobia, as it's listed on this page), which is Greek for "fear of melting faces". I recently published a website about this phobia (leximoulaison.wixsite.com/liomenoprosopohelp), which includes external resources to similar phobias to supplement the information I provided; but this would probably count as original research (moderators, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), which isn't allowed on Wikipedia. Anyway, I couldn't find anything on Google about your particular phobia, but a good word for it might be panoliomenophobia, which is Greek for "fear of everything melting." Hope that helps, and good luck navigating your phobia journey! I know how hard that can be!LoveYouForever96 (talk) 22:07, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

Add 'stratophobia' to list
I'd like to see stratophobia here, from Greek prefix 'stratos' (Στρατός), i.e. 'the military', as seen in prejudiced concern giving rise to discrimination against service persons and/or veterans.
e.g. Once when trying to find an apartment here in Vancouver, a landlord asked me what I did for a living. Disclosing "I'm a Naval Officer?" she replied "Oh, so are you an alcoholic? Because it seems to me most of these military people are alcoholics." I averred how I am not, in fact, an alcoholic (but agreed we were evidently unsuited in values to do business with each other.)

Spheksophobia is the fear of wasps, although sometimes it can be generally applied to the Vespidae insect family. Spheksophobia should be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.197.134.44 (talk • contribs) 22:22, 31 May 2021 (UTC)

- @Discospinster: You deleted 'Sidonglobophobia' with the comment "remove entry sourced by pop psychology websites". One of those sources was Medical News Today, which our own article describes as "a web-based outlet for medical information and news, targeted at both the general public and physicians. ... the third most visited health site in the United States." (The article says nothing about "pop psychology".) On the talk page is mentioned, "most major newspapers, including the NYTimes, use it as a source." Sounds like an RS to me. Please revert your deletion. – •Raven .talk 16:34, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
- This article is not meant to be a list of every wacky phobia that has ever been mentioned on a website somewhere (even if it's a very popular website). "Reliable medical sources" means articles published in medical journals, that can be found in the databases noted in the box at the top of the page. If you're looking for a place to have fun with constructing Greek words then I would suggest Phobia Wiki which has less stringent criteria. ... discospinster talk 16:59, 14 February 2023 (UTC)
- @Discospinster: (1) "a website somewhere (even if it's a very popular website)" seems to ignore the point about "most major newspapers, including the NYTimes, use it as a source" — after which I commented "Sounds like an RS to me."
- (2) "'Reliable medical sources' means articles published in medical journals" — that indicates their being the exclusive source. But WP:MEDRS only says they "are the best place to find both primary and secondary sources." (NB: we try to avoid primary sources in most cases.) Other places besides med/sci journals are acceptable for secondary sources... with caution against a 'Sokal' situation. The four links in my first comment above included Medical News Today and ScienceAlert (whose footnote-2 links to another article calling it "the second-largest science website in the world" and "known for the accuracy of its original content"... again not claiming mere "popularity" for it) — neither of them "wacky" — both of which mentioned sidonglobophobia. MediaBiasFactCheck rates both as "Pro-Science" and "High" in Factual Reporting: [6][7]. Again, your original stated deletion reason was "sourced by pop psychology websites", which does not fit these two. (If the entry is reinstated, I would use them and not the other two.) I will also note that the existing references list contains many periodicals but few med/sci journals... so your proposed standard seems unevenly applied.
- (3) "If you're looking for a place to have fun with constructing Greek words" — for the sake of easing your reading comprehension, upthread I twice discussed neologisms proposed by others, noting reasons they might not work... but also not proposing the inclusion here even of alternatives. – •Raven .talk 02:18, 15 February 2023 (UTC)

Belonephobia inaccuracy

Belonephobia is listed as the fear of needles. However, if you click on belonephobia, you will find that it is actually the fear of sharp objects, and this page mentions that the fear of needles is a specific kind of belonephobia. However, I cannot edit this page because it is protected. Can someone fix this inaccuracy? 209.237.105.194 (talk) 20:12, 6 February 2023 (UTC)
- Not done for now the referenced article is on Aichmophobia, which is the more general fear of sharp objects. Though there does seem to fuzziness to the way both these terms are used (Aichmophobia and Belonephobia), the sources listed in the article support the current definition of Belonephobia as the more specific fear of needles and Aichmophobia as the more general fear. If a more in-depth review of the literature supports the use of both as more general I could see this being changed, but one dissenting dictionary definition doesn't justify the change to me. - One of numerous 'tech-related phobias' listed here, and here. I don't know whether we really want to get that deep in the weeds; at least some of these seem to be humorous, e.g. "Biemusgetosmartphobia – The fear of Justin BIEber MUSic GETting On your SMARTphone. This one might only ever apply to me...". – •Raven .talk 15:22, 14 February 2023 (UTC)

- "Fear of Mondays"? Are we also going to list a phobia for each other day of the week? Also, shouldn't it be "defteraphobia"? In Greek, Sunday = Κυριακή (KeeriakEE); Monday = Δευτέρα (DehFTEhra); Tuesday = Τρίτη (TREEtee); Wednesday = Τετάρτη (TeTArtee); Thursday = Πέμπτη (PEmptee); Friday = Παρασκευή (ParaskeVEE); Saturday = Σάββατο (SAvatoh). Greek transliteration appears to be incorrect
> (from Greek φόβος phobos, "fear")
Beta (β) is transliterated into Latin as “v”, not “b”. So it should be phovos, or probably better would be fovos, since Phi (φ) is an “f” sound and “ph” I’m assuming is from an older pronunciation code system.
see the Greek alphabet Wikipedia page for beta and phi transliterations: Greek alphabet
as well as google’s transliteration and pronunciation agree too: https://translate.google.com/?sl=el&tl=en&text=φόβος&op=translate SalaDitman (talk) 17:36, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
Or alternatively if it said it was from Ancient Greek, that would technically match the Greek alphabet transliteration too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SalaDitman (talk • contribs) 17:47, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

I mean, Acephobia is here. Why not Arophobia, the fear/dislike of Aromantic people? Admittedly, I'm not familiar enough with the standards on here to know if I need to prove that it exists or something, but, anecdotally, I can confirm that it exists.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me could do whatever is necessary. I'm just making the suggestion.
