Where are the numbers coming from?

How are numbers being updated ff YouTube quit publicly displaying likes? Mike Allen 01:47, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

Presumably, using the browser extensions mentioned in the article. I think it's disingenuous for this article to report official YouTube dislike numbers/ratios with the unofficial browser extension estimates. The article will be stronger if we cut it off when they removed the button. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 02:55, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
The button is not removed. It is still there. What YouTube did is that it started to hide the number of dislikes a video got. But viewers can still see how many dislikes a video got with the help of browser add-ons. Gahipaj135 (talk) 03:11, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Yes, my bad. "dislike button counter" is what's no longer present. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:16, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
What do you mean by "official" and "unofficial"? There's nothing "official" in YouTube numbers anyway. "Official" is something that is declared by some official representative (employee). And those browser extensions don't "estimate" anything. They just un-hide the hidden number. That's all. The number of dislikes is factual. Gahipaj135 (talk) 03:20, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
I mean "official" as in "reported by YouTube" itself. As far as I'm aware, the extensions are extrapolating. See e.g. this piece in HowToGeek on one of the extensions: "The extension works using a combination of cached data that was grabbed before YouTube disabled access to the dislike function in its API, and extrapolated user behavior. This means that the number of dislikes on any given video will not be correct, but the ratio should be somewhat accurate. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 03:25, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
Oh, you're right. I stand corrected. I didn't know it was extrapolating. Gahipaj135 (talk) 03:57, 23 January 2023 (UTC)

18 million dislikes on youtube short - how to add?

Change the counter of dislikes of "Revenge" video from 20,170,000 to 54,000,000 46.193.67.66 (talk) 23:24, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 23:56, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

"Wheels on the bus" marked with a dagger.

The music video "wheels on the bus", which is currently at 22, is marked with a dagger, but not in a different color, even though it is a music video. Is this a mistake? Momsemann (talk) 20:00, 10 April 2023 (UTC)

Fixed by Firefangledfeathers, thanks! Momsemann (talk) 06:46, 11 April 2023 (UTC)

Remove YouTube Dislike

I have a question. The browser plugin makes the count visible. Why isn't it on here? Trakaplex (talk) 05:14, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

As far as I'm aware, the browser plugins don't actually make the count visible, but they do use prior data and the dislikes of plugin users to estimate what the count would be. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 14:52, 12 May 2023 (UTC)

Another new short that I found

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/RMYpMVZSIz4 12 million (using same extension) Jishiboka1 (talk) 09:50, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

As someone with access to the live API this dislike count on this video is only 112,238.
These plugins are so inaccurate Kmc0011 (talk) 19:28, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Relying on a browser extension as the basis for this entire page??

YouTube disabled public dislikes in December 2021. They aren't visible on the video and cannot be accessed through the API except by the uploader. For the purposes of this list, they are inaccessible. Any browser extension claiming to give you dislike data is either making things up or relying on a combination of old data and data generated through that browser extension. What percentage of internet users use that extension? What about competing extensions? Why should we think it's reliable to base on or extrapolate from? It's just somebody's kludge for a feature that no longer exists.

As time goes on, and the real data gets older and older, this page will rely more and more on the browser extension. We already are so bold as to assert the most disliked videos ... without any dislike data about those videos.

This page really needs to be transformed to a historical list of disliked videos at the time it was turned off. — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:54, 16 March 2023 (UTC)

I agree with the historical list idea. We talked about this briefly in #Where are the numbers coming from?. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 15:27, 16 March 2023 (UTC)
Anyone else care to chime in on this? Thinking to restructure the page soon, absent any objections. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 01:34, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Hello, I am the user who started registering the shorts in the list, although I agree to make the historical list, it does not seem so bad to me to trust a chrome extension for this page, what I recommend is to divide the before and after youtube hid the dislikes. In the end, the shorts are very viral, to such a degree that there are already several with more likes, it is not difficult to imagine that recent videos already have millions of dislikes Rob17p (talk) 11:41, 29 March 2023 (UTC)
Bit late to the thread, I agree.
I have access to the live dislike count, the counts before this change were way off - I mean millions off Kmc0011 (talk) 19:30, 10 August 2023 (UTC)
