Rules
[edit]This page desperately needs rules. What constitutes a long name? What counts as a letter? The list is currently going down to 14 letters, yet cities like Pindamonhangaba, São Paulo are not included (14 letters, assuming the nh digraph doesn't count as 2). Yet names that long aren't that uncommon. Eg. Itaquaquecetuba, São Paulo (14 as well, second qu is a digraph), loads of 13-letter ones in Brazil.
Finally, what constitutes a word? For example, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Wales despite looking like a single long word, can clearly be broken down into pieces and the fact that there's no space there is merely a quirk of the written language. While it's still remarkably long, it's not too different from Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, Mato Grosso (28 letters, if we were to ignore the spaces). 213.79.54.25 (talk) 10:26, 10 April 2024 (UTC)
South America
[edit]My recent revisions of the article were inspired by the following discussion. I added Onafhankelijkheidsplein (23 letters).

Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik
[edit]I added the translation, which was absent for Pekwachnamaykoskwaskwaypinwanik Lake. I also corrected the language shown. It said it was Inuktitut, but the name is Cree in origin. 50.115.184.189 (talk) 22:27, 28 May 2012 (UTC)
Eskimo place names?
[edit]No long place names in any Eskimo language, despite their famously long words? I sense a gap.
Compare the following quotation from here: "Most Inuit place names are descriptive in nature, which can result in very long place names." Exactly what you'd expect. So where are they? --Florian Blaschke (talk) 01:18, 10 February 2015 (UTC)
- I have searched in the following categories.
- The longest unhyphenated one-word place names that I have found in them are listed below.
- Kangerluarsoruseq (17 letters) in Greenland
- Qeqertarsuatsiaat (17 letters) in Greenland
- Kangiqsualujjuaq (16 letters) in Quebec

Table
[edit]I've started a version of this article which uses a table at Draft:List of long place names. Would there be any interest in pursuing this format? (Before I waste more of my time.) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:46, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- Please continue your work of making a table. I might have made one eventually. —Wavelength (talk) 16:13, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- The only problem is the necessity of having so many hyphens. Can't see any way round that though. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 19:53, 14 September 2015 (UTC)
- A table would be an improvement. I have edited Draft:List of long place names to propose some changes to the layout. Verbcatcher (talk) 20:51, 16 December 2015 (UTC)

Detroit?

Russia
[edit]Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsk(i)y has a long name. City and administrative center of Kamchatka Krai. — Preceding unsigned comment added by BrianTheInternetSurfer (talk • contribs) 07:41, 2 April 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, it is quite long. According to Yandex, the longest oeconym (name of a settlement) in Russia with dashes and no blanks is Kremenchug-Konstantinovskoye. Шурбур (talk) 09:24, 3 April 2017 (UTC)

Anglesey
[edit]It says, "Long place name on the Isle of Anglesey: Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf" (under "Names with spaces or hyphens"). Definitely not true. Llanfairpwll... (58 letters) is on Anglesey. I looked on Welsh Wikipedia and saw that Llanfair Mathafarn Eithaf ≠ Llanfairpwll...; the two are not in the same place on Anglesey; Llanfairpwll... is very close to the Welsh mainland; Llanfair Mathafarn is not.--Solomonfromfinland (talk) 21:22, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Llanfairpwll... doesn't have any spaces or hyphens. -- Dr Greg talk 23:57, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
How long is long?
[edit]Why on earth are we including places with names as short as 12 letters? By no stretch of the imagination is that a long name... Could we define what constitutes long, before we end up listing down to 3 letter names? Elemimele (talk) 08:47, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
Gobichettipalayam
[edit]Why isn't Gobichettipalayam in the list? It has 17 letters in its name. DSOFOreverTYU (talk) 20:13, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
