This list needs pruning. It will be done soon to conform with MOS:LISTS and to remind people that Wikipedia is not a directory. All entries that do not link to an article that shows notability and supports the reason to be in the list will be removed. -- Alexf(talk) 18:36, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

By whom and when? --WikiHannibal (talk) 02:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
:: Yet to happen...the whole entry is a mess! CILECT membership, although insufficient on its own to justify the notability of individual film schools, is as good starting point as any to give an indication which institutions might be worth consideration - although there are several important schools are not members Mowerbyte (talk) 23:26, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I just decided to go for it and removed every institution that didn't have an active wikilink from the list. GoddersUK (talk) 15:16, 14 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Two lists

[edit]

What is the reasoning behind the two headlines, Active institutions in continents, and List of active institutions? Should they contain the same info or not? How to decide where to put film schools from countries not mentioned? Why are some Euroepan schools listed as Europe and other under their respective countries? Why is Federal University of Santa Catarina listed twice, etc.? --WikiHannibal (talk) 02:04, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:120.60.166.9 has just reinstated these two institutions (under "Other Schools") despite neither of them having achieved notability in the interim, nor do they have Wikipedia articles. What's the protocol here? Should Altamel intervene and block this IP as well as revert the edit? There are of course many entries that need to be weeded out according to these criteria. NPOV warning

[edit]

Persistent edits by User:Lalmani to insert a promotional sentence about Mumbai Film School in the opening paragraph have been deliberately "hidden" by flagging them as minor edits, "typos" whereas each one adds over 100 characters. This user has been advised about NPOV three times in the last few months on their User talk:Lalmani page Mowerbyte (talk) 14:43, 25 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Persistent promotional edits - NPOV issues

Despite numerous warnings and reverted edits, User:Lalmani persists in promoting an institution by inserting an unreferenced sentence at the very end of the opening paragraph (see below for details). As well as being a clear departure from Wikipedia's neutral point of view (NPOV) policy, the sentence here is a non-sequiteur as the article deals with a global list of film schools and no single institution should be highlighted here.

Despite adding over 100+ characters each time, User:Lalmani consistently flags these edits as "minor" in an obvious attempt to minimise his/her intervention.

Furthermore, in the main body of the page under the heading List of active institutions User:Lalmani repeatedly lists the same institution (the Mumbai Film Academy) as a member of the international film school network CILECT, whereas this is patently not the case - see CILECT's own list of members in India, which includes only three institutions: Whistling Woods International, the Film and Television Institute of India and the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute. Edits attempting to correct this are reverted despite evidence that the institution is not a member of CILECT.

After numerous attempts to persuade otherwise, it would appear that User:Lalmani has no genuine intention to stop this promotional activity, so this is a request for a Wikipedia administrator to intervene and protect this page from further edits by (a) removing the sentence in question "Mumbai Film Academy located at Andheri west, has been rated as the best film & television institute in India." and (b) removing the Mumbai Film Academy from the list of CILECT members.

Please advise if there is another way to deal with this problem.

April 2017: work still to be done

[edit]

This article still needs substantial work! I have been tinkering away for a while fixing stuff, but it really is a mess.

  • As previously noted by Alexf, as Wikipedia is not a directory all entries lacking a Wikipedia link to demonstrate notability (or at the very least, substantial evidence other than linking to the institution's own website) will be removed. This may require the page to be semi-protected to avoid disruption/edit wars.
  • There still appears to be no logical reason for two lists Active institutions in continents, and List of active institutions, so these should be gradually merged / pruned.

Question: does it make sense for schools to be listed by continent or nationally by country? One possible template for the former would be to use CILECT's five regions (not however limited to CILECT members): Asia/Pacific, Europe, North America, Latin America, Africa. If so, then countries should be listed in alphabetical order for the sake of clarity. Mowerbyte (talk) 10:50, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've taken the next step and have created the Asia/Pacific category by renaming and merging the South Asia and Australia categories, and have added the Beijing Film Academy which was a surprising absence here as one of the world's most important film schools (and largest, in student numbers). I'm going to leave the second part of this article intact until the first half has been pruned / updated, so there will by definition be a certain amount of duplication and excess baggage. I also plan to remove institutions that do not have Wikipedia articles to back up claims for notability. In some cases this will mean that a parent institution is listed (for instance a university) where the film school is a sub-section of a faculty or department. Mowerbyte (talk) 16:58, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Another important detail - enrollment - this should be the number of students attending the film school, rather than the total number of students at the whole university. For instance the Simon Fraser University in Canada is listed as having 34,000 students whereas the numbers attending the film/media school are only going to be a tiny proportion of this number - several hundreds, maybe over a thousand. The challenge will be of course to access accurate statistics for this, but it seems a nonsense to me to list the larger number when this article is supposed to be about "film schools". Mowerbyte (talk) 17:04, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

One new issue I've just realised: as the Edit notice states clearly: Every entry in this list must have an article written in the English Wikipedia, with reliable sources to support inclusion, else it will be removed without warning; however, with the exception of NAFTI in Ghana and two of the CILECT schools in South Africa, none of the other Full Members on the African continent have Wikipedia entries (ISMA in Benin, CRTV in Cameroon, HCI in Egypt, ESAVM in Morocco, NTA in Nigeria, Tshwane in South Africa). This is going to be a lot of work!Mowerbyte (talk) 20:31, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

....and the elephant in the room is that none of the US schools are included in this article, but have their own separate Wikipedia entry!!! Mowerbyte (talk) 22:37, 4 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Repeat promotional edit advertising the Mumbai Film Academy

Once again, the edit reinstates almost exactly the same promotional sentence as on 29 March 2017 and previously, only this time implemented by User:Lekhraaj possibly an alias of User:Lalmani.

Therefore this is basically the same request for intervention by an administrator to:

  • Remove the sentence at the end of the introductory paragraph "Mumbai Film Academy located at Andheri West is one of the most popular film institutes of India."
  • Delete the Mumbai Film Academy from the list of CILECT members (it is not a member - see explanation on 29 March post)

How can this be stopped? As well as permanently banning both users (almost certainly the same person), perhaps Wikipedia should consider that the institution they are promoting should also be blacklisted from Wikipedia as the cause/source of this spamming. Advice would be welcome as this persistent activity is certainly not accidental.

Thanks. Mowerbyte (talk) 21:56, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As it happens, caknuck already warned User:Lalmani on their talk page that: "persistent spammers will have their websites blacklisted from Wikipedia." List of film schools. So the precedent is already there to target the institution. Mowerbyte (talk) 23:28, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Mowerbyte, thanks for your work monitoring this page. If you see promotional material added to this page, please go ahead and revert it. Unless you have a conflict of interest with the subject of this page, there is no need for you to seek approval through the {{request edit}} template first. Just WP:BRD and I don't think anybody will have a problem with that. Altamel (talk) 04:14, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your advice, Altamel - I have used this opportunity to clear out some of the institutions lacking notability. Still a lot more to be done, but it's a start. I fully expect the spammers to return later this month once the page has been un-protected, but let's see. Mowerbyte (talk) 06:10, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As expected, User:Lalmani has reappeared exactly as the page becomes unprotected! caknuck, you already warned User:Lalmani once, is it not time for a ban, seeing they are just repeating earlier disruptive edits? Mowerbyte (talk) 13:13, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Whoops, of course this time the edits were made by User:Lekhraaj rather than User:Lalmani - but they are almost certainly one and the same. I've reverted them, but am wondering how much longer this has to continue before banning them, can you advise, Altamel? Mowerbyte (talk) 13:22, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
To clarify: my question is not whether to ban those doing the promotion (User:Lekhraaj, User:Lalmani and whatever name they invent next week); but the institution itself (Mumbai Film Academy), seeing that it is the ultimate source of all this disruptive activity? How does a ban actually work? Still learning the ropes... Mowerbyte (talk) 13:27, 23 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Under the section Africa - Film School Africa College has been operating in the Cape Town area and can be found at [1] 169.1.133.41 (talk) 13:07, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As the notice on the edit page makes clear, every entry in this list must have an article written in the English Wikipedia, with reliable sources to support inclusion. This institution lacks such an article, and until a legitimate Wikipedia entry exists, the institution will not be added. There are several other institutions which are in the process of being removed as they all lack this criterion. Mowerbyte (talk) 17:32, 11 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We should note that the current state of things is clearly unsatisfactory, specifically the fact that so few film schools in Africa have articles in (English) Wikipedia - currently there are only two listed in South Africa and one in Ghana, whereas there are several major schools that lack entries, such as ISMA (Benin), CRTV (Cameroon), HCI (Egypt) or NTA (Nigeria). Other schools such as ESAVM (Morocco) have entries in French Wikipedia [2] which could be translated into English. Mowerbyte (talk) 17:25, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

We recommend adding the following New York Film Academy locations to the (2) List of other active institutions section because otherwise, this list has incomplete data for New York Film Academy locations:

Australia • NYFA Australia, Gold Coast [3] China • NYFA China, Beijing [4]NYFA China, Shanghai [5] Germany • NYFA, Berlin [6] India • NYFA, Mumbai [7] Italy • NYFA, Florence [8] Japan • NYFA, Kyoto [9] Netherlands • NYFA, Amsterdam [10] Qatar • NYFA, Doha [11] Russia • NYFA, Moscow [12] Turkey • NYFA, Istanbul [13] ShuffleParrot (talk) 00:03, 15 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

References

Not done. Please see WP:PRIMARY regarding your sourcing. Please also consider that maybe, the NYFA listing covers all of these and, accordingly, we should replace the current listings with one mention. This article is already way too long and adding all of these wouldn't be a marked improvement for the typical reader. I apologize for how long it took for this request to get a response. CityOfSilver 20:38, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unquestionably, the correct decision was made by CityOfSilver to reject the proposed inclusion of all of these separate NYFA website sub-pages as if they were autonomous film schools housed at permanent addresses in the various locations. Also, as the NYFA's own website states, degree programmes are only offered at their LA and Florida campuses. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a promotional platform to advertise commercial operations.Mowerbyte (talk) 06:01, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Once again, the plethora of links listing all the New York Film Academy locations as if these were all separate, autonomous institutions and not just subpages on the main NYFA website has been reinstated by ShuffleParrot and once again reverted. This is clearly promotional activity probably by someone employed by the institution, and most certainly not in the spirit of Wikipedia which is an encyclopaedia, not a directory. Should this occur again, the page might need to be (semi) protected. Mowerbyte (talk) 23:04, 3 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Undid repeated promotional edit on behalf of NYFA by ShuffleParrot, more or less proving that this user has a fixed agenda to promote said institution, ignoring earlier warning. Next step will be to protect this page. Mowerbyte (talk) 01:06, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
