@MacCormaic: Looking good! Since the new additions are not in English, they should be italicized (MOS:FOREIGN); I'd be happy to go through and put in the {{lang}} templates. Also, as far as I can tell, common names in Irish, like English should not be capitalized (MOS:LIFE). @Craigthebirder: I will add the sentence and a link to , however, I am getting the bird names mostly from a Irish-English dictionary of Irish birds I compiled a number of years ago, that is unpublished. However, I did get a lot of my research from Bird Watch Ireland.

Reliable source for Irish names

I've found what appears to be a reliable source for the names in Irish. The website of the British Trust for Ornithology has the names of British Isles birds in several languages including Irish. I was able to extract the Irish names below from their website. For instance the link https://app.bto.org/birdfacts/results/bob1520.htm is for the mute swan, which it gives in Irish as "Eala Bhalbh". Putting the number to the right of each name below in place of "1520" in the link above takes you to the webpage for that species.

At very least, we could use "Search by Irish name". British Trust for Ornithology as a reference.

Change to IOC taxonomy

I have reverted the recent additions and changes which cite IOC taxonomy because retaining them causes several problems: (1) The new citation is not to the IOC taxonomy, but to the most recent version of the Irish Rare Birds Committee list (December 31, 2019), which provides IOC 9.1 names as alternates to the main list's names. (And IOC 9.1 is out of date, replaced sequentially by 9.2 and 10.1.) (2) The added gull species and the lumping of the petrels follow the 2019 IRBC list, so the retained text stating that the source of the list is the 2015 IRBC list and Bird Checklists of the World and the associated counts is no longer true. (3) Though I have not examined the 2019 list in detail, it is highly likely that more additions or other changes are needed to match that update. (4) A very large number of additional changes are necessary to convert to IOC regardless of whether the list itself is updated, so the new text stating that the taxonomy "...largely follows that of the IOC world list version 9.1." is far from true. I will update the article to the new IRBC list using IOC 10.2 when the latter is available, which should be within a couple of weeks. Craigthebirder (talk) 20:40, 27 June 2020 (UTC)

July 17, 2020 update

The major update of July 17, 2020, made the following changes:

• Update the source of the list to the December 31, 2019 IRBC list.
  • Delete the species previously brought in from Bird Checklists of the World (Avibase) that are not on the new IRBC list, and delete the Avibase reference from those that are on it.
  • Delete 17 species altogether.
  • Add three species.
  • Revise four species to species pairs or triplets, one of which now has a note.
  • Revise the table of status tags and the status entries throughout.

• Convert the taxonomy to IOC 10.2 (July 2020); the new IRBC list uses an earlier version of the the IOC taxonomy.
  • Revise the sequence and English names of families.
  • Revise the name of one order.
  • Revise 68 common names.
  • Revise 12 binomials.
  • Revise the sequence of species within families.
  • Revise the Osprey text to reflect that IOC recognizes two species in the family.

• Revise the taxonomy reference and the text and species counts in the introduction.
• Add a Notes section.

What to include?

@Donkey8: You recently deleted many species with the edit summary "List has been updated to only include species actually present in Ireland, including vagrants causes confusion and bloats lists". I think before that is done a consensus should be developed. Your belief about what is best may not be shared with others on Wikipedia. All other lists I am aware of include vagrants. I don't think vagrants are useful to have on any country animal list. They do not accurately represent the country's fauna and can cause confusion to viewers of the page that don't know any better. Donkey8 (talk) 22:27, 2 April 2023 (UTC)
