hi,i find that Madonna is not included with her singles "Hung Up, "4 minutes", "Music" and "Give it 2 me" that had selling wordwide 11 milions,8.1 milions, 7.1 milions and 6.5 milions respectively. the sells of "Like a prayer" single that are passed from 5 milions to 10 milions during the last two decades.So she must be included with her seven selling singles in that chart..before Katy Perry and Britney Spears.

Not done:– The source may be reliable, but the song still only has 1.41 million in certifications from the entire world. (Brazilian certifications would change that but there are none) I suggest we wait until the yearly IFPI Digital Music Report that comes out next January or simply wait until the song gets many more certifications.

Also, to put things into perspective, "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" is claimed to have sold 8 million copies and actually has 5.4 million in certifications in some of the world's biggest markets. That is around 67% of sales covered by certifications compared to "Ai se eu te pego!"'s 9% coverage.

If we are to believe that "Ai se eu te pego!" sold 16 million copies, it should have been certified for much more, especially since many countries, like Mexico, Poland, Spain, Italy, Belgium and New Zealand only started awarding Gold and Platinum awards after Bryan Adam's song was released, meaning that the new song should have a higher percentage of its sales covered by certifications to begin with.

I believe that Michel Teló song has not sold 16 million or even 8 million copies around the world, otherwise it would have proven sales and certifications comparable to the ones that "Poker Face" has.

Here it's not a question of WP:Verifiability but of WP:EXCEPTIONAL. I think it was a typo mistake and the correct sum is 1.6 million copies. What is weird is that the report names it as the biggest selling single of 2012, which is a lie: "Somebody That I Used to Know" holds that position with close to 8 million as of July. Actually, no single have sold 16 million copies in the first 8 months of a calendar year since when? Never. Not even "I Gotta Feeling", or "Poker Face", both 2009's best selling singles have reached that sum to date (14m, 12m respectively). —Hahc21 00:45, 4 August 2012 (UTC)

Songs like these do provide a good arguent for the inflation of single sales. Let's not forget My Heart Will Go On's certifications– they don't even reach 6 million.

PARTY ROCK ANTHEM, JUST DANCE, UMBRELLA

Thanks for updating Party Rock Anthem sales. What do you think about sources for updating Just Dance...?

I found also information about Umbrella, by Rihanna. Here (http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20080103006104/en/CORRECTING-REPLACING-2007-U.S.-Music-Purchases-Exceed) you can see Nielsen Soundscan sales were 2.359.000 in 2007 music report. Here (http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-aug-19-2012-songs-swift-set-203143800.html) you can see that sales (again by Nielsen Soundscan9 are now 4.089.000.

The difference is 1.730.000 only for USA sales; I am sure also UK sales have increased, but it is much more difficult to demonstrate. Do you think is it possible to increase 6.6 million sales (by IFPI 2008 report) up to 8.33 million (6.6 + 1.73)?

About "We Found Love" sales, for USA sales RIAA certification is used, but in Yahoo music (http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-aug-19-2012-songs-swift-set-203143800.html) they are now at 4.601.000. Digital singles seperate?

Doesn't make much sense to seperate them. Every song is now available to purchase digitally, no matter how old they are, and a lot of sales is attributed to digital sales. It would be very useful: the list is the same as the one revealed on Music Week (http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-official-top-150-biggest-selling-singles-of-the-21st-century-revealed-1382/) and sales should be based on sales reported in Music week. Furthermore, many sales data match with data I found in Music Week (for example "Someone like you" sales).

Here (http://www.buzzjack.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=141954) Just Dance sales are 909.000, while the previous source I used reported 700.000 (it was an older source, thus increased sales could be justified). New total sales would be 8.525.000 + (909.000-700.000) = 8.73m.

For Party Rock total sales I found also 246.420 copies sold in 2011 and 48.254 in 2012 in Gaon chart: http://gaonchart.co.kr/main/section/online/download/list.gaon You have to click in "연간" for annual chart (second round space next to the box with the year), then select in the year box "2012" and in the next box "2012 08" for total 2012 sales up tu august. For total 2011 sales select "2011 12" instead. The most convenient thing is waiting fo the end of 2012 and adding all the sales together.

I partly agree with you about Bad Romance and Telephone, but the problem is that there is no way to find official and reliable sources to prove their sales. It's impossible to reach IFPI sales looking for certifications in every single country (Bad Romance wouldn't reach 8 million copies and Telephone 6 million), thus the only way to certify new sales is to find official 2010 sales, then official sales up to 2012 and make the difference.

With Poker Face and Just Dance it is possible (even if their sales in the main article are not very well done), but there are no sources with exact sales for Bad romance or Telephone.

Paparazzi, Alejandro, The Edge of Glory: certified sales in the world (excluding USA) don't reach the 1 million mark for each of these songs. If you have reliable sources, sales could be increased. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.162.3.16 (talk) 14:27, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

White Christmas figure...

It's a guess. 50 million copies was being touted in the 1980s and is too much of a round number to be genuine. Certainly by 2010 several million more ought to have been added to that figure. Does any one know any more up to date figures, or could we work out an appropriate caveat for the article in terms of precision? DavidFarmbrough 10:50 a.m. UST 2nd December 2010.

Interesting observation. I believe the list could use some prose explaining not only that but the differences between the calculation of digital single sales as opposed to physical single sales.

Party Rock ANTHEM, Just Dance, My Humps

Fist of all sorry for my English: it is terrible, but I'm italian...

I think that Party Rock's sales should be updated to 10 million (at least), because it sold 9.7 million just in 2011, when it wasn't still certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA. I've no sources I consider reliable (except for the new RIAA certification), but on yahoo it is said that it has reached even the 7 million mark in the USA, so 10 million worldwide could be resoneable.

About Just Dance by Lady Gaga, IFPI stated that its sales stood up to 7.7 million at the end of 2009, but Nielsen Soundscan sources report that it has reached 6.6 million in the USA, gaining 0.4-0.5 million in this country after 2009. I think Just Dance's sales should be rounded to 8 million; furthermore sales' certifications of this single around the world justify what I've said (if sources on Wikipedia page of Just Dance are correct).

On the contrary, I should not update Telephone's sales: in some cases IFPI's data seem to be oddish to me, 'cause the don't tally with certified sales in each countries. I'm talking about Telephone, but also "The Time: Dirty Bit", "Born this way" and many others. Aniway, IFPI is maybe the greatest source in the music selling world and I don't want to say anything more about it.

Finally My Humps by Black Eyed Peas: 8 million copies sold??? I think it's too much; I can accept that a song like Crazy in Love can have sold 8 million, since it was a success worldwide. But not My Humps: it's certified only 2x Platinum by RIAA and it achieved very moderate success in the rest of the world. Regarding "Party Rock Anthem" and "Just Dance", you are correct, those sales figures are outdated as IFPI only count sales up to each November. As you can see here, those are not the only songs with outdated sales.

As you may have already seen with "Poker Face", "Rolling in the Deep" and "We Are Young" before and after, we do take care to update sales.

However, it is a slow process, as to date only Hahc21, Mcdonalds and myself have bothered to research global single sales country by country. For some of the bigger hits, such as "Poker Face" it can get to be quite complicated.

So bear with us, we will eventually update them all.

Lastly, I will not (if anyone asks, I can justify this with WP:IAR) accept "rounding" as you suggest. The best option is to (in my opinion) only use IFPI (best source for world sales), Yahoo! Music, Billboard and Music Week (for detailed US and UK sales) and certification databases (like RIAA, BPI, BVMI, SNEP, ARIA, CRIA, etc.)

Regarding "My Humps", I agree, those sales seem quite exaggerated. Singles from the early to mid-2000's are always troublesome. Since that particular Yahoo! source is special, let's wait for consensus before removing the single.--Mαuri^’96 “...over the Borderline” 10:20, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

I have a question: is it possible to look for total sales directly on IFPI? Because I remember someone wroting in this Talk that Telephone's sales should be updated to 8.5 million since USA's sales have reached the 3 million mark and they were just 2 million when IFPI stated that total world's sales were 7.4 million. But if we sum up every single country's certified sales, we hardly reach 5 million. Thus it's not possible updating sales in this way. PARTY ROCK ANTHEM

Other way to increase Party Rock's sales: I have searched for numbers in Paul Grein's blog on Yahoo Music and here (http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-dec-25-2011-songs-bringing-sexy-235057906.html) you can see that Party Rock sold about 5 million copies in 2011 (after IFPI gave certification for 2011 music sales, 9.7 million for party rock). Here (http://music.yahoo.com/blogs/chart-watch/week-ending-july-1-2012-songs-jepsen-does-035518750.html) you can see that Party Rock sales in july broke the 7 million wall. I chose to check information in the same site and by the same blogger; I think he has used the same sources, thus sales should be comparable. If you accept this way of updating sales, Party rock is now at 11.7 million (9.7 million in 2011 IFPI report + 2 million sales in USA in 2012). I found your answer about updating Telephone's sales in the same way and I provided to give sources. I hope they are reliable, but I remember that data on Billboard were not so different.

Maybe I will try to look for Just Dance sales in the same way. Also Umbrella (by Rihanna) sales could be increased because billboard says that sales in USA are more than 4.000.000 and in 2007 (when IFPI certified 6.6 million sales) they were not so high. Korean Sales on Gaon Chart, Telephone and Bad Romance

I tried at random to find Korean singles sales and I managed to find something in the official Gaon Chart website, even if I am not very sure about it.

Hereunder what I have done:

Enter Gaon Chart website and click on “CHART” (on the top, next to “Gaon”).

At this point you can see in the middle the title “<2012& 10& &&>” (the &s are Korean words, I think they are simply the year, the month and the day or maybe the week). Above the title there is a large rectangle in light gray and white divided into eight parts: the first part is selected, but you have to choose the third one. The third allows you to see real singles sales, while the first one shows you singles points, something similar to Billboard method to decide singles ranking.

Now go under “2012& 10& &&” on the left (above the numbered list) and you find three “squared buttons”: choose the one on the right (the third button, the first should be selected when you enter the page). In this way you choose foreign artists’ singles sales; the second button is for Korean singles and the first is for all the singles together.

Then, at the same height on the right side, there are three round and little buttons: choose the third one (the first and the second round buttons are for weekly and monthly sales, I think, but you can see only 2011 and 2012 sales in this case).

On the right, next to the round buttons, there are two rectangular spaces: in the first one you can choose the year, in the second one you choose the way you want to see singles sales (for the whole year, monthly, weekly).

It could be quite interesting because many worldwide best selling singles have a lot of sales in Korea. For example Rolling in the Deep sold 1.462.934 in 2012 (up to now), which could be added to global sales. Moves like Jagger sold 2.149 million copies in 2011 and 1.545 million in 2012, therefore 12 million copies if we sum up all the certifications/sources we have. Also Poker Face, I’m Yours, Party Rock Anthem and many other songs sales could be updated.

If you think these numbers are not annual sales or that something is wrong (absolutely possible, I don’t know anything about Korean language…) you can simply not consider them. I hope it is clear, it is very hard to describe.

We loose the difference between Your Love Is My Drug sales and real Telephone sales, but this is the only “certification” we have; furthermore I think not many copies are lost because real sales should not have been far from 2.5 million. We can also add 160.306 copies sold in Korea in 2010 (see in Gaon Chart).

Global sales: 7.400.000 + (3.200.000 – 2.663.000) + 160.306 = 8.097.306

i think the whole article is "vandalized". for one, there are no clarifications of what a single is and what are eligible for inclusion. second, certifications are not reliable sources since some of them are given based on shipments rather than sales (think of the riaa). third, mastertones should not be included since the wikipedia article for truetones say it is different from a single, it is released first before the real single, and it often outsells them. fourth, the ifpi maybe reliable, but according to its annual reports, the top ten singles they list usually combines various formats of the song which may include physical (other countries still release them), downloads and truetones. and lastly, i wonder why some internationally popular tracks are not included in the list considering they are the ones that sell the most. the other songs on the list would have total available sales record even less than a half of their reported claimed sales. this is one reason why i think the whole article is majorly "vandalized". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 112.202.135.161 (talk) 09:09, 6 November 2012 (UTC)

No list is perfect. What we are trying to do here is compensate for the fact that the IFPI only releases its list ONCE a year and that they only include the top 10 singles, meaning that if the tenth-best-selling song of the year sold 7.5 million copies, all the songs that sold between 5.01 and 7.49 million copies are left out.

Regrading certifications, when it comes to digital certifications, the awards are always given after a given track or ringtone has sold the minimum amount. There is no such thing as a "shipment" when it comes to digital singles.

Besides, even if shipments did exaggerate sales, that could be considered a good way of compensating for the sales from countries we don't have (many) certifications from, like Japan, Argentina, Poland, all of Africa, Colombia, Indonesia, China and India.

Regarding the "internationally popular tracks", I am well aware that there are singles/tracks that sell 3-5 million copies in South Korea or Japan alone, yet I haven't been able to include them due to lack of reliable (or understandable) sources.

The Guinnness Book of Records does not compile sales statistics. It doesn't say how it gets its claims for White Christmas for example. We should exclude it as a redible source.

rules and regulations

although i appreciate the fact that we try to improve this article as much as we try to do, i think there should be rules and regulations with this article. for one we should define what a single is. also, we should also define when a single is physical and when is it digital. we should also decide whether mastertones are to be included (although according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truetone mastertones are not singles and they often outsold them). also let's decide whether south korean retail sales should be used or not since the said source (gaon charts) is a bit unreliable.

i would like to clarify with mastertones. i think we should not include them as it just gives confusion to readers, for one, even if ifpi includes them in their annual tally, i think they would only include countries where a mastertone is considered as a single, which means countries such as the us, canada, spain and japan treat them differentlyfrom a single. in fact, in the us, even if low would reach 9x platinum, the riaa still considers i gotta feeling as the best certified digital single there, meaning mastertones are only classified as singles when certified (there are no mastertone albums). for more of it you should raher visit the riaa site.

as with singles that do not have a single source mentioning their global sales, the ifpi (http://www.ifpi.org/content/library/international-award-levels.pdf) mentions countries where they get sales figures for their annual tally. in the list single sales from south korea and russia are not included, so we should not include them; otherwise the list gets a bit complicated.

some points to consider: for physical singles:

• anak sold 30 million
• achy breaky heart sold 20 million
• seasons of the sun sold 11.5 million
• the ballad of bonnie and clyde sold 7.5 million
• music (madonna) sold 7 million
• lady marmalade sold 5.2 million
• yeah (usher) sold 5 million
• because we removed mastertones, several tracks would have sales go down, including: thriller at 5.5 million and billie jean at 5 million.(beat it would drop out of the list).
• songs with multiparty sources should be corrected: eye of the tiger is at 8 million; ill be missing you is at 7.1 million; youre the one that i want is at 6.5 million
• other tracks with 'special sources': crazy in love is at 6 million
• boulevard of broken dreams is a digital single, while toxic is a physical single

for digital singles:

• many songs should just instead be returned to their sales figures reported by ifpi: poker face, bad romance, party rock anthem, love the way you lie, moves like jagger, rolling in the deep, im yours, low, hey soul sister, love story and single ladies (irreplaceable will drop out)

• Yes, standardisation and consistency in list criteria is essential - otherwise such a list becomes a nonsense.

• In general, we should follow established reliable sources.
• But, ahhh..., the sources don't agree, either on how to measure, or on figures...

Well, I think you are right about Gaon Chart (I posted the discussion about it): it is unrealistic that Moves Like Jagger has sold more that 3.6 million copies only in South Korea. So, I agree with you. However, I think we can update sales by IFPI if we have the increased sales in countries such as us: IFPI uses Billboard/Nielsen Soundscan sources for usa's sales and in the annual report by Nielsen or in Paul Grein Chart Watch we can see which number of copies a song has reached. Just to make an example, Poker Face had sold something less than 4.3 million copies until November 2009, when IFPI reported worldwide sales of 9.8 m, but on June 2012 it had passed 6.7 million copies (http://www.billboard.com/#/news/ask-billboard-was-lady-gaga-s-born-this-1007298762.story) and I am quite sure it will have sold more than 6.8 m in the next Nielsen annual report. I think it would be unfair not to consider so many more copies sold, especially because numbers come from the same source IFPI uses.

About mastertones, it is difficult to decide since IFPI considers them within total singles sales, while (for example) RIAA does not. Maybe considering the average price of a mastertone could be a solution. I am from Italy and here true mastertones do not really exist; there are only ring tones that are nearly illegal, meaning that companies generally sell them in subscriptions that aim to bilk customers. Therefore I cannot say what the average price of a mastertone is in Italy. But I imagine that in US is different: if the price of a mastertone is similar to the price of a digital single (on Amazon or on iTunes e.g.), I think we could consider mastertones together with digital single sales in the total sales of a song (this plus the fact that IFPI already puts them in total sales) because for purchaser it would be almost the same, in the end. Don't understand...

Given the recent trend that commercial music download sites reportedly sell mostly single tracks rather than whole albums, an increase in popularity that seems to have rubbed off on physical formats, the list is split between digital singles and physical (CD and vinyl) singles.

I can't understand the logic of this sentence. It seems to be saying that singles are becoming more popular versus albums across both digital and physical media, and hence the list is split. Why would that be a reason for splitting the list? Poker Face: In 2009 it sold 4.2 million copies in the U.S. and worldwide a total of 9.8 million copies, but between 2010 and 2012 Poker Face has sold 2.6 million copies in the U.S. that make a total of 6.8 million copies sold in the U.S. alone, but between 2010 and 2012 has not sold only in U.s but also sold another 2 million more in the rest of the world and that makes a total of 14.3 million copies sold worldwide .

All I can honestly tell you at this point is that one of IFPI's similar publications, "Record Industry in Numbers" is only just going to published in Spring 2013 which can mean anywhere from March to June.

Credible Sources needed

The vast majority of attributed sales on the list are simply not credible. Just because something appears on Yahoo or in the media doesn't make it true. The Guinness Book of Records is not reliable either. It ignores its own rules on verification when it comes to record sales - and prints any old claim.

There needs to be some reliable sources eg sertfications such as RIAA, BPI, ARIA and/or chart compilers eg Soundscan, official Charts Company. This article isn't doing Wikiepedia's reputation any good. (Coachtripfan (talk) 20:41, 14 December 2012 (UTC))

I agree that random Amazon biographies and the lists published by "yradish" are not reliable, however, all other Yahoo! sources (Paul Grein blog) should be used as they cite Nielsen SoundScan figures only published elsewhere annually at businesswire.com.

I've been asking myself the same question since I first edited this page seriously one and a half years ago.

It's the main reason I've put so much time and effort into it.

Despite all that, we can't have the same standards for singles that we already have for albums for two reasons:

1– While the difference between each RIAA platinum level an album receives is 5% of an album that sells 20 million copies (low error margin for proven sales vs. real sales), until 1989 it was 40% (or 20% if after 1989) of a single that sold 5 million. (high error margin for proven sales vs. real sales)

• In other words, when Michael Jackson's Off the Wall receives a 8× Platinum RIAA award (total worldwide certs of 9.7 million) in the United States instead of a 9× or 10× Platinum award, a reasonably strong case can be made that the album hasn't sold 20 million copies because if it had sold just a few more copies in the U.S. (8.7, 9.2 or 9.6 million) the album would have been certified for it.
• On the other hand, when the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" receives a Platinum RIAA award for sales of 2 million (total worldwide certs of 2.9 million) in the United States instead of a 2× Platinum award, a only a weak case can be made that the album hasn't sold 5 or more million copies because the difference between a 1× Platinum and 2× Platinum award is so large that the single could have sold 2.3, 2.6 or even 3.4 million copies and still only be certified for 2 million copies.

In fact, this is exactly what happened with this particular single, as its real U.S. sales are 2.9 million. When this is added to real French sales of 0.84 million, you get sales of ~4.13 million in just Canada, France, the U.K. and the U.S.

2– On a related note, let us compare Off the Wall and "Stayin' Alive" 's variety of certifiactions. While the former has received Gold, Platinum and multi-platinum awards from nine countries, the Bee Gees song has only received them from four countries, this despite the fact that the two were released within 20 months of each other.

Imagine how well-certified best-selling singles were before 1973, a time when there were no German certifications, British certifications, Canadian certifications or Platinum RIAA awards.

The truth of the matter would appear to be that certification-awarding institutions are simply not interested in or would/do not profit from tracking the sales of their older single releases and certifying them. This becomes apparent when one does further research and finds out that of the nine certification-awarding institutions that gave Off the Wall an award, three of them (New Zealand, Mexico, and Italy) did not exist when the album was released. Evidently, these institutions care more about certifying albums than singles, since "Stayin' Alive" did top the charts in New Zealand and Italy, in addition to charting in Australia (No. 1), Germany (No. 2), Switzerland (No. 2), Austria (No. 2), Belgium (No. 2), and Holland (No. 1)- all of which also eventually certified Thriller, which was released just three years later.

Conclusion: We can't effectively use certification requirements for older singles, especially those released before the mid-1970's.

certain parts of your comments are true; however even if agree with you in some cases, a clarification would still be needed. as i remember, it was the same concern ive read about this article months ago. although i agree that there should be a reliable source, i like to clarify that even these sources are all based on claimed sales alone. in fact, there is still much debate whether mastertones should be considered as sales since the format is not available in all countries, and even theses countries have different definitions on what the format is. i suggest we clear it out.

also, what im more concerned is the accuracy of the list. many singles on the list, whose sources are multiparty such as in the case of 'thriller' and 'bohemian rhapsody' use various sources for the countries where they come from. riaa and bpi cert. may be used as sources for us and uk sales in one song, but in another song us and uk sales might use nielsen and music week. it gets a bit confusing.

also, even these sources are out of date. for example, 'we are young' has sold 6.7 million downloads based on certifications only and 8.7 million if riaa and bpi certifications will be used replaced with nielsen and music week figures. however the page itself is out of date as it says the song has sold 6.7 million only. a bit confusing, right?

Don't forget that in 2005 it was very difficult for a single to sell very well: the physical era of single sales had come to an end, while digital single sales were not very strong yet. The one notable exception, "Hips Don't Lie" only reached 10 million because, after combining digital downloads and mastertone sales, it sold over 5 million copies in the Unites States alone.

No, but if you compare the Buzzjack forum numbers to official Nielsen SoundScan numbers released on Business Wire and Yahoo! Music, they almost perfectly match, save for the fact that the numbers on Buzzjack are updated much more often and are not rounded to the thousands.
