Questions
[edit]Removing fictional character Lord Humungus JWoods86 (talk) 05:57, 11 September 2015 (UTC)
Taking Chris Jericho off the list. While his contributions to professional wrestling are commendable I do not think that his qualifications in the area of Islam quite merit his inclusion here. Maybe next year. --140.21.15.75 (talk) 22:10, 19 November 2008 (UTC)
Do we want to list ALL the ayatollahs, or just those living? You're looking at a list that's much longer than the one here.
- All the ones worthy of an encyclopedia article on them. We may need to separate them into Grand Ayatollahs and Ayatollahs later when the list grows. roozbeh 11:40, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)
Another is we should make something like a family tree who was the teacher of who up to the time of Imams. 129.130.15.91 02:08, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
In Robert Fisk's book, "The Great War for Civilization", he talks about an Ayatollah Abul Qassim Kashani. He implies Kashani was a possible future leader of Iran, though he says Kashani's capability to command a mass movement is disputed. Not sure if this possibly-alternate-Khomeini thing warrants his presence on this list, but I thought I would raise it for other, better informed people to consider. (Mentioned in Chapter 4, The Carpet-Weavers, pg. 98 - in U.S. edition).
- He's already on the list: Ayatollah Abol-Ghasem Kashani.--Zereshk 08:05, 29 June 2006 (UTC)
There is a wiki list of Grand Ayatollahs: I think the Ayatollah list should not include Grand Ayatollahs.
Ok, I will remove the grand ones. --Gerash77 22:34, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
I also demoted "Ayatollah Sam Linnett" -- after more than a month on the list!--Gerash77 22:47, 3 October 2006 (UTC)
Syed Aqeel-ul-Gharavi
[edit]Aqeel-ul-Gharavi is not an Ayatollah. If you want to prove otherwise, then the "burden of proof" is upon you to prove that he is. Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Lakhnavi (talk • contribs) 15:56, 16 April 2007 (UTC).
not recognized ayatollahs
[edit]I dont know why there is more ayatollahs in Pakistan than iraq please, please edit this list as it is almost 50% wrong.
- There are dozens and hundreds of more ayatollahs in Iraq, please take some time to add them, rather than deleting names from Pakistan's section based on this argument. NEDian (talk) 22:37, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
Khamenei is definetly NOT a grand-ayatollah!
Living and dead
[edit]There should be some distinction in the article between those ayatollahs living and those now dead. The List of marjas has it. --BoogaLouie (talk) 23:18, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
Hosseini Nassab self-proclamation
[edit]Hosseini Nassab has only self-proclaimed the title which is not a holder. Please answer questions in his discussion pages in different languages before keep adding him to these lists.
Linux4ns (talk) 01:31, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- By a simple search, you can find the sources such as Islamic organizations, independent websites and academic institutions which introduced him as one of Marjas and Grand Ayatollahs. Here are some of them in different languages:
- [1] Source No. 1
- [2] Source No. 2
- [3] Source No. 3
- [4] Source No. 4
- [5] Source No. 5
- [6] Source No. 6
- [7] Source No. 7
- [8] Source No. 8
- [9] Source No. 9
- [10] Source No. 10
please study the answers in his discussion pages in different languages. Academycanada (talk) 03:21, 24 November 2009 (UTC)
- My friend, before you copy and paste the same paragraph everywhere, see the disputes driven over your reasoning and try to answer them first(e.g. here). Also do not include references in non-English languages in English discussion pages, since they are simply useless to an English reader. --Linux4ns (talk) 08:01, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- 1. I and other Wikipedia's users have mentioned the answers and evidences in that page. But you have mentioned the same question here and said: Hosseini Nassab has only self-proclaimed the title.
- 2. If the other sources are not valid, Why did you include the reference in non-English languages (which was in Farsi) in English discussion pages here? Academycanada (talk) 09:25, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sir! I am not here to argue, just need an answer! --Linux4ns (talk) 22:05, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
- Me too. Please answer this question to find the answer. Academycanada (talk) 08:07, 26 November 2009 (UTC)
- Sir! I am not here to argue, just need an answer! --Linux4ns (talk) 22:05, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Mr. Nassab's claim has received official dispute by all Canadian Shi'a leaders, few of which has been reported in this article. Please do not add his name to the list until justified either way, as this is more safe and accurate. Linux4ns (talk) 04:13, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- First of all, there are more than 350 Islamic organizations in Canada and hundreds of leaders and scholars. According to this article, 8 people asked a question in their letter, but they did not receive an answer.
- Secondly, beside 10 sources which have been mentioned in this page, the name of Mr. Nassab is mentioned as an Ayatollah and Marja in other sources, including:
- [11] Islamopediaonline.org (By: Harvard university)
- [12] website of Marjaa
- [13] introduction of Marjas (By: Allama Azhar Hussain. Academycanada (talk) 05:32, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- Please read few lines above and see the disputes driven over your reasoning and try to answer them before you add up to these invalid references! (e.g. here). Not only some links in the above list (1-10) do not work, but also some of them are Wikipedia mirrors and personal weblogs. It is a shame to count them as valid references.
- I suggest to remove the name until reaching a certainty point! It is obviously more accurate. Linux4ns (talk) 17:25, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
- See all sources carefully. Academycanada (talk) 18:45, 20 April 2010 (UTC)
Article cleanup
[edit]2012
[edit]This article has turned up into mess, with every Tom, Dick and Harry adding names of their liked ones as Ayatollah. I just removed few of the Indian names from the article who are definitely not an Ayatollah.
- As first step of further cleanup I'll remove all Ayatollahas from the list who don't have their own article or don't have reference.
- In second step I'll check the articles of the Ayatollahas and see if they are actually one or not or just they are listed here as one.
- Third step will constitute of verifying the references and cleanup based on that.
- Also, as Grand Ayatollahas have their own list I'll remove them from this list (anyways they were Ayatollah at one stage of their life but now they have advance to higher level of ijtihad and attained marjiyat hence earning title of Grand Ayatollah so it is sort of disrespect to include them in list of lower level).
Any suggestion is more than welcome.--Sayed Mohammad Faiz Haidertcs 18:58, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Deceased and Current Ayatollahs
[edit]Don't you think it would be more practical to put the Current Ayatollahs above the Deceased Ayatollahs in each country? If people are searching for an ayatollah as their spiritual guide, they would prefer to see the current ones at the top of each country category. Even the word current alphabetically comes before deceased. CryMeAnOcean (talk) 18:48, 4 September 2018 (UTC)
Since nobody objected, I made edits to move the current ayatollahs above the deceased ayatollahs. CryMeAnOcean (talk) 00:06, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Removal of non-Iranians
[edit]Per reliable sources listed at the article Ayatollah#Usage by location, the title is not in use for non-Iranians. I remove irrelevant sections. Pahlevun (talk) 19:41, 6 September 2020 (UTC)
- That info is dated (1987), and we have many references that now this title is used by Shia clergy globally.--14.142.206.26 (talk) 01:10, 11 September 2020 (UTC)
- You have not provided a source for your claim. Pahlevun (talk) 10:04, 11 September 2020 (UTC)

List of names at end of article
[edit]I fixed a cite error, and an issue with the table of deceased Iranian Ayatollah. Previously the table was missing an end, and so it contained the rest of the article. After fixing the table there is a list of people at the end of the article. I'm guessing they were meant to be elsewhere in the article, but ended up confused by the table issue. Could someone with knowledge bofnthe subject have a look and correct as necessary? Thanks ActivelyDisinterested (talk) 11:53, 20 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yes I think I fixed it, the names I think you were referring to was in the "Further Reading" Section, which I will remove as it is a duplicate of names in the Iran section. Thanks. Ali313korosh (talk) 21:38, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
Proposal to merge all Countries together and make two separate list; Current and Deceased. Thoughts?
[edit]For sake of keeping this article consistent, I propose it is best to merge all countries together into just two lists, Current, and Deceased. The format will be similar to that of the list in the Iranian section.
Note: Names of those who have not got a Wikipedia article can then be used in bullet-points (current form) at the bottom.
Any objections? Ali313korosh (talk) 21:32, 13 February 2022 (UTC)
