Wiki Languages Engine & Language Sorting
[edit]I would like to ask:
that wiki would make visible if existing all of 6/7 Worldwide Official Languages of UN.
What is more Languages of each wiki article should be listed by Languages Family:
that is for example if Article is read in French, All Romance Language should be displayed,
if Article is displayed in Ukrainian all Slavic Languages should be displayed,
similarly for Romance, Semitic, Germanic including Scandinavia languages.
What is more, languages should be displayed by geographic ip Location:
if ip is from Finland the languages of Neighboring countries should be displayed:
Norwegian, Swedish and Russian, Estonian, Even Canadian French.
Maybe it would be good to display whole neighboring Languages Family, because I think it is good to display a little too much than too little.
PS if I petition not in place, please, do not delete, just forward to exact point where I should petition. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.187.202.138 (talk) 00:44, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
- Unfortunately this is not the right place to ask this. See WP:NOTAFORUM. You could maybe request new languages to the Language Committee, see the article as to how it works. GeraldWL 12:11, 27 December 2020 (UTC)
"Language editions"
[edit]We traditionally have called the separate editions of Wikipedia "language editions". This is contested in this diff by User:Gerald Waldo Luis because simple.wikipedia.org is not technically a language. Also Nostalgia Wikipedia. I would say these are minor exceptions that should not confuse the issue, and be left as a side note. In fact Gerald Waldo Luis created such a note:
- Note that not all Wikipedias are of a language: the Nostalgia Wikipedia is an archive of the English Wikipedia's initial display, whilst the Simple English Wikipedia merely uses Basic English.
I believe this sort of exception note is enough and we should continue calling them language editions, even if there are two exceptions. Arguably simple is also a language edition since it's a sort of dialect of English - it's defined by language choices. Sometimes we do things not by exacting technical pedantry but the consensus of tradition. -- GreenC 14:36, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- GreenC, feel free to restore the word "language" if you think it's right. My only concern is that it can be misleading prior, at least until readers hit that note paragraph. If you haven't guessed it yet, I have plans to bring this a featured list. GeraldWL 14:39, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
20th Anniversary
[edit]Wikipedia: 20th anniversary happened. This list should be updated to include the establishment dates of the Wikipedias, thus when can know how old they are. -- 70.31.205.108 (talk) 05:24, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Can you specify where an update on age is needed? I don't see an area in this list that needs update every time a Wikipedia matures. GeraldWL 05:44, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- It would not update each time a Wikipedia matures, it would add the establishment date and age to every entry. ie. {{date and age}} -- 70.31.205.108 (talk) 08:57, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Where? GeraldWL 09:03, 15 January 2021 (UTC)
- Onto the list table, where all the versions of Wikipedia are listed, an additional table column would need to be added for this. -- 70.31.205.108 (talk) 02:32, 16 January 2021 (UTC)
- Sounds useful to have a sortable column of origin date. If someone can provide origin date data, it can be integrated into this Commons Tabular Data file which can be accessed with
{{NUMBEROF}}
. It would look something like{{NUMBEROF|origindate|fr}}
. The advantage is Commons tabular data is available to all Wikis and tools, and{{NUMBEROF}}
is installed on over 70 wikis already. -- GreenC 02:53, 16 January 2021 (UTC)

Sep11wiki
[edit]Should the Sep11wiki be included in this list? There's a page describing it on meta here. It's been closed since 2006, but it was an official Wikimedia project for a while. 86.23.109.101 (talk) 14:25, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
Link to Wikipedias with different scripts
[edit]How does one link to a specific script version in Wikipedias that have those? E.g. a link to sr:Петар Бингулац would be better understood if it could directly go to Petar Bingulac. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 06:04, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
10n
[edit]Who decided using powers of ten to write the count of active users was a good idea? I find it illegible, and I’m sure a lot of people cannot read them. I suppose the topic was discussed, but I can’t find where in the archives. palpalpalpal (talk) 15:16, 28 July 2021 (UTC)
"Orphan" languages that have wikis?
[edit]Not sure what the correct term is, but languages that are not actively the first-language for some population of people. Example would be Latin, Esperanto, Klingon. Are there any others that have wikis? (Klingon doesn't) -- GreenC 21:28, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
Why no list of Wikipedias of dead and/or constructed languages?

Igbo Wikipedia
[edit]Hi! Can the link to the Igbo Wikipedia main page be added to the list of Wikipedias? Thanks Olugold (talk) 12:05, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Olugold: It's already in both tables on the language code "ig". Links on the full name only go to the English Wikipedia. Igbo Wikipedia redirects back to the list so it's not linked. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:01, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
- Alright. Thanks for your prompt response. Olugold (talk) 14:05, 23 October 2022 (UTC)
Split of Wikipedia list into active and inactive sections
[edit]The main table in the article was very unwieldy, both the length and the width. I split the table to reduce the width of the table and make the length more manageable.
- A strong majority of Wikipedias are still open so space used by the Closure date column was completely wasted until the very bottom of the table where the inactive Wikipedias were clustered.
- Similarly, the number of Active registered users for inactive Wikipedias ranges from -1 (whatever that means) to 3. This is not particularly useful information and sorting by this column is also not helpful.
- After splitting the table, it was possible to hide the Closure date column for active Wikipedias and the Active registered users for inactive Wikipedias.
- This also opens up the possibility of entirely moving the list of inactive Wikipedias to a separate article. I'm considering taking this step and I welcome your thoughts.

Length reduction
[edit]As indicated by Template:Very long being on this article for almost a year, something needed to be done about the length of this article. I've reduced the article from about 56 pages to 36 pages (printed length) which seems like a good improvement. The edit history has more details, but the big changes:
- I moved the long detailed statistics table to Wikipedia:Statistics of Wikipedias. Perhaps that really belongs in meta, but it was a major contributor to the absurd length of this article.
- Update: It's already been moved by someone to Wikipedia space which seems fine for now. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 19:24, 1 September 2023 (UTC)
- The tables on non-standard language codes are in meta so I removed that section and added a meta link to the external links. I preserved some prose about how different editions vary in handling of languages, dialects, and orthographies.
- I reduced the size of each Wikipedia logo. On my small screen, I can now view about 6 or 7 rows at once instead 4 or 5.
- I also cut down on the number of images and charts.
Daniel Quinlan (talk) 22:13, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Missing editions
[edit]The following language editions appear to be missing:
- fat: Fante
- gpe: Ghanaian Pidgin English
- guc: Wayuu
- gur: Farefare
- lzh: Literary Chinese (wasn't missing, but had a broken cell)
- shn: Shan (wasn't missing, but needed a link for the script)
- tly: Talysh
Daniel Quinlan (talk) 05:03, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- Added. I also fixed broken table cells for Classical Chinese Wikipedia, Southern Min Wikipedia, and Cantonese Wikipedia. The launch dates still need to be added, but I am going to poke at whether there's an easier way to do that. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 20:13, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- Wait what about the Berber wiki? איתן קרסנטי (talk) 07:45, 6 December 2023 (UTC)
Negative number of users
[edit]How come the Cantonese and Southern Min Wikipedias has got "-1" i.e. a negative number of active users? –Tommy Kronkvist (talk), 17:11, 14 December 2023 (UTC).
Tahitan Wikipedia
[edit]It appears that the Tahitan Wikipedia has been deleted from the list. Blackmamba31248 (talk) 03:02, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
Igala wikipedia
[edit]shouldn't [igl.wikipedia.org] be added? 48JCL 22:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)
addition of information regarding the number of articles on different Wikipedia language editions
[edit]Should the active editions table be sorted by the number of articles on different Wikipedia language editions instead of by number of active users, with the latter information possibly either removed or kept in addition to the number of articles, because I think it makes more sense that way? PK2 (talk; contributions) 08:39, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, several Wikipedias have massively inflated article counts due to automated article creation bots so I think it ends up being a significantly less helpful indicator of size. Article count might be a more interesting column than the logo or script columns, though. Daniel Quinlan (talk) 12:32, 8 August 2024 (UTC)
Out of date
[edit]It looks like this article is a couple months out of date. The site creation log here: [1] says that the following new Wikipedias have recently been created:
- rsk.wikipedia.org
- nr.wikipedia.org
- tdd.wikipedia.org
- ann.wikipedia.org
- iba.wikipedia.org
- mos.wikipedia.org
- kge.wikipedia.org
I'd be happy to help maintain this article myself, although I'm not sure where to get the information for it. Can somebody provide a guide for that? The site creation log has the WP code and the Launch date. And it looks like there's some coding that gets the number of Articles and Active users. But where is the information stored for each Wikipedia's Wikipedia name in English, Wikipedia name in native language, Language, Script (ISO 15924 code), and Logo? It looks like the logo in the top left of each article is made up of three separate pictures, but the logos in this article's table are all combined into a single picture for each Wikipedia. - Burner89751654 (talk) 17:50, 6 November 2024 (UTC)
