Greetings. I came here via depths of Wikipedia and as much as I like defenestration like everybody else, I am not sure if defenestration really qualifies as an "invention" and/or "discovery". I fully agree that the Prager Fenstersturz, as we like to call it is uniquely linked to Prague and the Czech but unlike many other inventions and discoveries in the list, I have trouble with the classification in either one of them. Nothing in this statement is meant to diminish or ignore the important Czech contribution in throwing an entire continent into mass bloodshed for a generation or two over some religious dispute, I just think that Wikipedia should use a little more specificity in that list. From the contribution of @Mathias Schindler and from the reactions of other users directly on the page (@Uajii and then me) it follows that defenestration is not an invention or a discovery (see Edit summary). Nevertheless, it is repeatedly returned by unregistered and newly registered users (one user?). Can we agree that it is not an invention/discovery? I believe that if defenestration continues to be renewed without discussion, page protection should be approached. FromCzech (talk) 10:01, 27 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll add my two cents here: Analogically to the actual robot not being a Czech invention, but rather the concept, I do believe that defenestration as a concept can be mentioned.
The term ‘defenestration’ was coined specifically to describe the the defenestration of 1618. The event was significant enough to warrant a unique term.
Including defenestration in the list acknowledges its unique cultural and historical significance. To quote the Czech Wikipedia article on defenestration, "In medieval and early modern society, which is strongly vertically structured (with the importance of layers decreasing from the top), defenestration has the character of a symbolic punishment." 2A00:1028:9195:57E:3D04:1609:D2E8:A253 (talk) 00:07, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
