Notability for academics

[edit]

According to WP:Notability (academics), one of the criteria for notability is, "The person has held a major highest-level elected or appointed academic post at an academic institution or major academic society." Does department chair at American University of Beirut constitute such a position? I presume that it is the highest-level elected position within the department (at least, it is at my university), but I'm not certain - given the wording of the guideline - if a department counts as "an academic institution".

Choueiri is cited in numerous works cataloged by Google Scholar and Google Books (currently 149 and 97, respectively). This may constitute "a significant impact in the area of higher education," though that is subjective. Cnilep (talk) 23:54, 20 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had not heard of h-index; thank you for pointing it out. Note, however, this caveat from the WP page: "The index works properly only for comparing scientists working in the same field; citation conventions differ widely among different fields." That being the case, h-index does not seem like an appropriate tool for establishing the notability of academics generally on Wikipedia.
I'm also not aware of any database that calculates the h-index of linguists. Contrary to the suggestion at h-index, ISI Web of Science does not (or at least, I was unable to find it). Calculating the score by hand for each linguist currently on WP would be a great deal of work, and might only result in one piece of empirical evidence for further debates on notability. On Web of Science, use the pulldown menu to sort the list by "times cited", then just count down the list until the number of citations is less than the number of articles you've just counted. Anyway, now that the article has been deprodded, it would take a whole AfD to have this article deleted. Abductive (talk) 22:21, 22 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
