Third largest city

I have removed the addition of this to the lead

the third largest city in the United Kingdom by population

with a reference of http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/uk_topcities.html

the figures in the reference refers to the wider City of Leeds area and not just to the city as this article is directed at. Keith D (talk) 12:17, 14 May 2008 (UTC)

Coat of arms

Just a note that the Council coat of arms recently added do not pertain to Leeds, but the City of Leeds council - i.e. the metropolitan borough. This article should not display them - Otley and Micklefield have just as much claim to displaying them (the 1974 arms were mostly illstrated to represent the "whole" borough - not the centre). Please be mindful of that distinction.

It has been mentioned (in an edit summary) that Manchester displays its arms - that's because it's a metropolitan borough (like the City of Leeds). A fair use rationale here, doesn't cover its usage. --Jza84 |  Talk  11:07, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Capital of the North?

The citation given for saying that Leeds is known as the "Capital of the North" was a rather spurious article on the BBC website about Leeds's astrological chart! I have now changed this, and have also qualified the statement slightly as there are other places that could conceivably claim the title, Manchester being the obvious one. Well there isn't really a capital of the North, but Leeds is far bigger than Manchester anyway. Only people from Manchester call it the capital of the North. Technically, if it means the north of "England", then Liverpool is biggest. - Yorkshirian (talk) 01:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

Leeds is the largest city by population in the north of England, and the largest financial centre. This is what enables it to claim Capital of the North, although it is a dubbed title that can be used to describe Leeds or Manchester depending on what terms you're referring to. For example, in the media sector or residential construction industry, Manchester is Capital of the North.
