Single Sales Grossly Under-represented

Many of Gaga's singles are much lower than they are in actuality. For instance, 'Bad Romance' has sold nearly 5 million copies in the US, whereas on this Wikipedia page, it is reported to have only be a Platinum record. 'The Fame' Sales - 16,500,000

According to Entertainment Weekly, Lady GaGa's album sales for 'The Fame' stand at 16.5million worldwide. The fame in France

The french sales and certification for the album "the fame" need to be updated. Actually the album is diamond in France (and not 2x platinum anymore). It's written on the official site : SNEP. The diamond status is given when sales are exceding 500,000 copies as it's written on the same page.

The sales where - in fact - higher than 535,000 copies as of the end of december 2010. Charts In France

The Singles

I think The Singles compilation album should have an article. Even though it is a small improvement, it will make Gaga's discography more complete. Any thoughts? Zpenguin23 (talk) 15:41, 6 April 2011 (UTC)

I believe it fails WP:GNG as it lacks coverage in reliable third-party sources. Adabow (talk · contribs) 04:44, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
I agree. As a box set compilation with no new material, there would be hardly any background to the article, and as far as I know, it did not receive much in terms of promotion. And as stated above, an album requires coverage in reliable sources to meet notability guidelines. Yves (talk) 04:50, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Born This Way #1 France

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_number-one_hits_of_2011_(France) BTW is listed as hitting #1 in digital and physical charts and on the SNEP chart... http://www.disqueenfrance.com/fr/page-256084.xml (she is #3 this week, it says last week she was #1). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.7.104.229 (talk) 03:56, 9 April 2011 (UTC)

chillin single...

yeah, chillin is a single, but lady gaga is only featuring in it, like every other artist they have list single as a main artist and and as a featuried artist, like christina aguilera has it. chillin should be change to as a featuried artist. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.154.109.218 (talk) 09:02, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

This has already been discussed. See above. Yves (talk) 18:24, 7 March 2011 (UTC)
There was no consensus on the above section Yves, I do believe that "Chillin" should be put back on the main table. — Legolas (talk2me) 14:30, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
Is it not? Yves (talk) 16:32, 12 March 2011 (UTC)

Isn't it obvious that some pressed Gaga hater wanted "Chillin" to be put in the main singles list because they can't stand the fact that Gaga has never had a single chart lower than #6 in the US? #justsaying —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.188.205.66 (talk) 09:54, 14 March 2011 (UTC) How about having a seperate section like Kesha? Divide the singles tab into two sections. singles as a "main artist", and singles as a "featured artist" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.153.112.209 (talk) 14:48, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Please read the above discussion first. Adabow (talk · contribs) 20:35, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

What above discussion? Why is this even a discussion? There is a reason that everything lists her as a featured artist including this table and the cover art. She sn't the main artist. It's not her single. This is ridiculous.

I'd like to bring this back up, this should be moved from the main singles to the 'Other Charted Songs' section. It is no different to Video Phone, it is a featured single, so why is it being shown in the main singles section? It is not correct. Buxton87 (talk) 10:43, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Actually, after looking over the discography again I think a new section should be made for singles as a featured artist. I don't know why Video Phone is listed as not a proper single as it was released as a stand alone single, so can a new section be made for singles as a featured artist where 'Chillin' and 'Video Phone' can be moved to? Buxton87 (talk) 10:46, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

The answer is no. Gaga's only featured single to be released commercially is "Chillin", which is not moved into a separate table since its just unnecessary to create another table for a single entry. "Video Phone" the original version doesnot feature Gaga, she was only featured in the remix, which wasn't commercially released as a CD single. Hence it is not a Gaga single. — Legolas (talk2me) 13:32, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

What about 'other charted songs'? Isn't that why that's there in the first place? For extra singles that aren't part of her main discography? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.20.128.166 (talk) 23:34, 22 May 2011 (UTC)

SALES???

So recently on the UK television show Graham Norton, he told her about some "statistics." Those statistics were album and single sales and he says: "69 million singles sold and 23 million albums sold"

If this is being televised to millions of people I think they're going to believe that and that I'm guessing those are the OFFICIAL NUMBERS.

Change.

The video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oMF3ttjnA4 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.149.142.11 (talk) 06:15, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

You don't seriously believe those numbers? Many artists couldn't even do that in the 90's. --84.119.28.117 (talk) 19:27, 19 May 2011 (UTC)

There are two newspapers from Uk claming she sold 22 million album. I think they are ussing Graham Norton as a source because those sales are inflated. Billboard said this week tha The Fame sold 12 million WW, it is impossible total sales are 22 million because TFM EP soldless than 2 million in US, Japan and canada. I think sales now are a bit over 15 million but 22 is impossible. The MTV source said she sold 13 million in August 2010, it is impossible she sold 9 million since then.--Albes29 (talk) 08:10, 20 May 2011 (UTC)

Edit request from Afrazrasheed, 1 June 2011

@Legolas hello i had read about born this way topping french singles on your wikipedia site but now it has been corrected i didnt know about it thats y i told u and i was talking about lady gaga uk sales certifications because adele has sold 2.4 million and she has been certified 8 times platinum by BPI.. heres your wikipedia link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/21_(Adele_album) and lady gaga The Fame has sold 2.54million heres the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fame#Chart_performance and it has been certified 4 times platinum.. i dunno why.. i cannot really find any album certifications on the BPI site of any album so i gave refrences to ur wikipedia information... i mean dosent it look obvious that adele selling 2.4 Million has been certified 8 times platinum but lady gaga selling 2.54 million in the Uk has been certifies 4 times platinum... and ill bother using the template again.. okay but then will the fame stay only 4 times platinum... when it should be more...

Afrazrasheed (talk) 08:22, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Not done As I said there, record companies apply for certification to BPI, and Gaga's record company hasn't done so, while Adele's has. So 21 is certified 8× platinum while The Fame is 4× platinum. And this is not the correct usage of the template. — Legolas (talk2me) 08:29, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

As of June 2011, she has sold more than 51 million singles and nearly 20 million albums worldwide source.

Please update ;) ! --79.199.57.134 (talk) 18:01, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Hmmm. Lots of more or less realiable-considered sources state figures but an encyclopedia has to give exact sales certifications (platinum, gold, etc.) awarded by official music industry organizations (such as IFPI) to state the sure sales. This is just my opinion. -- Frous (talk) 18:34, 4 June 2011 (UTC)
EDIT on my opinion: An encyclopedia has to specify all the sales certifications, to count the complete sales. -- Frous (talk) 18:36, 4 June 2011 (UTC)

Born This Way (Album) UK Certification:

Should it not be certified as 2xGold? It has sold 215,000 copies. http://www.bpi.co.uk/certifiedawards/search.aspx — Preceding unsigned comment added by CharlieStockwell (talkcontribs) 13:04, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

The link you provided shows no result for Born This Way under Lady Gaga. And certifications are not automatically updated by BPI. Recording companies have to apply for it, and Polydore hasn't applied for such. — Legolas (talk2me) 13:52, 31 May 2011 (UTC)
2x Gold wouldn't exist as a bpi certification anyways. Mister sparky (talk) 00:35, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

The source used for Born This Way's U.S.A. sales say it has sold more than 5 million copies, and that GaGa said it herself. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Video Phone released as a single? And the single was remixed to include Lady Gaga (just like how Kanye West was added on to the E.T. song with Katy Perry). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.255.1.167 (talk) 10:15, 27 June 2011 (UTC)

It has occurred to me that it is not wholly accurate to lump The Fame Monster with The Cherrytree Sessions and Hitmixes, as the latter two had limited releases. Perhaps those two records could be reclassified as a live album (even if it is only 3 tracks) and a remix album, because it seems disingenous to say she had 3 EPs when The Fame Monster is more of an EP than the other two.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 20:56, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

My edit was reverted but the only references are from Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk and the fact that it charted in New Zealand on their music video charts. This title is not listed on the Official Lady Gaga store or is anything to do with Streamline Records, KonLive Distribution or Interscope Records. I propose its removal if no official reference can be found... Thanks JWAD Communicate|Nicely 12:02, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

I agree. If this is added then all those other unofficial titles we can find on Amazon might as well be added. One Sequin at a Time is not official. It should be removed. Stephenjamesx (talk) 14:14, 20 July 2011 (UTC)

The UK chart is actually a 200 position chart, not the 75 positions they publish. So those positions are not bubbling under positions, but actual ranks on the UK Singles Chart. — Legolas (talk2me) 05:54, 14 June 2011 (UTC)

Edit request from 72.192.197.226, 15 August 2011

I believe the Lady GaGa Discography page on Wikipedia should have a column under the "Peak Chart Positions" heading (for her singles) showing her unparalleled success on the US Billboard Hot Dance/Club Songs Chart, of which 9 of her past 10 singles have reached the #1 position. The only song to not achieve this feat was "Just Dance" peaking at #2. I believe this should be brought to the viewers' attention, as she started out as a Dance artist and has a PROMINENT following in the Dance/Electronic music community.

Unreleased(leaked) MUSIC VIDEO

There is a music video leaked online in 2010 from the band named The Midway State. The song was a cover but they did make a music video for it and it featured Lady Gaga on the video also for the song. They didn't release the song/video officially but still it's a MUSIC VIDEO and it's rarely happen, so why didn't just put the information into the Music Video section. Sales of Born This Way

Born This Way has sold over 5,000,000 by October 2011 and not 8,000,000 exemplares. To chance the points of sales don't make the rise of any sales or it doesen't getting better. So stop to chance the points, thats silly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.44.233.48 (talk) 16:13, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Now Digital Spy claim that BTW sold 5 million ( http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a344147/lady-gagas-born-this-way-tops-5-million-global-sales.html ). I think we should find another source because we can't trust a site that first say BTW sold 8 Million and two weeks later say it is 5 million. Mediatraffic is not a reliable source but their total are not far from the reality and BTW sales are around 4.6 million. I really don't trust Digital Spy and we should remove it until we find another relieble source.--Albes29 (talk) 17:12, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Increase sales figure Born This Way

{{edit semi-protected}} The sales figure for Born This Way (album) should be changed from 5 million to 8 million. Lady Gaga tweeted on the 23rd June that the figures were at 5 million. Several sources claim that 7-8 million is the appropriate number: http://www.ibtimes.com/articles/225749/20111005/lady-gaga-biopic.htm "We’re at 7.2 million albums, within a 90-day time span. I don't think ladygaga.wikia is acceptable because many people have access to edit it so it may be unreliable and YouTube is unacceptable because people can cheat by saying it's Gaga the one who sings it.
For example:
Silly Boy : They said this song was sang by Gaga featuring Rihanna but the real artist was Eva Simons.
Optimist : The voice was Nicole Scherzinger voice, not Gaga.

So I hope you understand....BUT WITH ONE EXCEPTIONAL...The video/reference must come from reliable channel. For example:
Lady Gaga Official Channel
Lady Gaga VEVO Channel
Lady Gaga's Label Official Channel

So if you want to find a source about Lady Gaga unreleased materials. I can give you three songs with reliable references:

Born This Way - Studio Album + Singles

Firstly why has the WW sales of Born This Way been reduced to 6 million when it clearly states 8 million in the information about the album + UK 2x Platinum certification needed as 821,000 copies sold, also the singles UK Platinum certification needed for Born this way as "2011 in british Music - Top 20 singles" shows 600,000+ sales meaning platinum certification need --> based on sales. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LukeChad (talkcontribs) 01:11, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Remember this thing: Certifications have to be applied by the record company to BPI/RIAA/IFPI to get it. Its not automatically updated. best selling artist? of all time?

the article states " As of October 2011, she has sold an estimated 23 million albums and 64 million singles worldwide,[1] which makes her one of the best-selling music artists of all time." This is a very powerful statemnt, but judging from the data in this wiki there are at least a dozen artists who have sold double or triple or quadruple her "album" amount. so this is misleading and biased.

Born This Way Sales (Mediatraffic.de)

In the 2012 the album sold about 400.000 copies (I controlled on Mediatraffic.de, that reports all the sales week to week) So, in 2011 Mediatraffic counts 5.400.000 million copies sold. This site controls just the Digital Download, if we take in consideration also the Physical sales, I think that we can surely reach the 8.000.000 or less. It's just a supposition. But it's sure that a minimum of 6.000.000 are sold. (Sorry for the bad english, but I'm italian) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Camix95 (talkcontribs) 10:23, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Born This Way Sales

"Born This Way" has not sold 8,000,000 copies worldwide but 4,851,000 copies to be exact. The link reference that announces 8,000,000 is totally wrong. 109.13.203.99 (talk) 20:34, 13 November 2011 (UTC)

Are you sure it isn't 4,851,001 copies (to be exact)? How can you sure? How can we know? Whom should we ask? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 23:40, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
Because sales have been counting each week since it came out and it does not give 8,000,000 at all, but 4,851,000. For example, "Born This Way" has sold ~35,000 copies last week. But I will let you do the thing you think is the better. 109.13.203.99 (talk) 02:54, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
I only think that relying on published sources is more reliable than what sounds like somebody trying to keep track with a pencil and notepad next to their computer. The point I was trying to make (perhaps a little too subtly or rudely; sorry) was that reliable sources we can cite are preferable to original research. Where do you get the exact number 4,851,000? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 09:42, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
John, that IP got it from Mediatraffic, a source which is deemed unreliable and a WP:BADCHART by the community, since they do not have any basis of their charts and sales info, its purely fabricated. — Legolas (talk2me) 10:07, 14 November 2011 (UTC)

Exactly, no worldwide sales can be that exact. Its more of an estimate, with +/- 10% I guess. — Legolas (talk2me) 10:18, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Why wouldn't 8 million copies be the correct figure? International business times is a reliable source — Christianrxx — Preceding unsigned comment added by Christianrxx (talkcontribs) 13:57, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Even when you take sales from each country, you don't get 8,000,000; 5,300,000 max. (PS: I am 109.13.203.99. I am not authed here cuz my Wikipedia username is already taken on the English version.) 109.10.39.223 (talk) 17:57, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
But I don't take sales from each country; that's the job of music industry journalists and analysts. If I do it it, it's original research, which doesn't help us here. You wouldn't want to rely on my figures, would you? I mean, what do I know? And what do you know about my reliability?
And so we come to you questioning my methodology (as surely you should). Where should I get the "sales from each country"? How do I know the numbers are complete? Are the sales in Argentina included? Japan? India? South Africa? Everywhere? Probably not; that means I might come up with some too-small number (like 5,300,000, for example), instead of the actual worldwide total (which might be, oh, around eight million). But it's not our job to add up sales; we only report what seems reliably sourced data. — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 23:43, 14 November 2011 (UTC)
Wow, 8 million sure seems to be an inflated figure. Judging, from the fact that this album tumbled down so many charts after the release of Y&I, 8 million is simply too much. It has not even reached 2 million in the US and it is out of the iTunes top 100. It is not doing so well in the UK as well, it recently jumped a lot there considering GaGa performed on X-Factor. Nevertheless, it depends, did the album sell 8 million or ship that amount? If this is true, i will have to say that Adele should be at 18 million then. ★Jivesh 1205★ (talk / ♫♫Give 4 a try!!!♫♫) 10:29, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Okay, Jivesh, I'll see your Adele at 18 million, and I'll raise to Perry Como at 43 million. Who else is still in? Or should we deal another hand? — JohnFromPinckney (talk) 12:33, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Lol, John, you made me drop my tea. Jivesh, John is right. Our core policy in WP is to report what third party verifiable and reliable sources has stated. We canNOT add our own interpretation anywhere. I'm not saying this because I edit Gaga's articles. I'm saying this to point out that peopel are missing our policies probably, which is exactly what John is pointing out. And as I have said countless times, don't even take into consideration what random IPs say about sales. That all comes from Mediatraffic.de and another foul website (I forgot the name). This traffic is all due to teh fan-boys at UKMix and Pulsemusic. — Legolas (talk2me) 12:38, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Okay. So it means the album has really old 8 million? ★Jivesh 1205★ (talk / ♫♫Give 4 a try!!!♫♫) 12:52, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
No. It means that because a reliable source wrote this, we do not have the power to veto it simply because it does not make sense to us. In reality, the album is probably around 5-6 shipped, with sold being under 5. As for Adele, 21 is probably at a nice 14 million copies already, bless her.--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 12:58, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
This is certainly one of the things i hate on Wikipedia. ★Jivesh 1205★ (talk / ♫♫Give 4 a try!!!♫♫) 13:06, 15 November 2011 (UTC)
Yes well, unfortunately, Wikipedia runs on Verifiability over Truth, so that can at times be frustrating to veteran editors who know what they are talking about. Alas, the only way above it are other contrary sources and/or consensus.--CallMeNathanTalk2Me 13:19, 15 November 2011 (UTC)

So it's official from Billboard.com that Born this way sold over 8 million units. Can't believe it by myself cause the five big markets have sold so less units (US 2.100.000, UK 900.000, GER 200.000, CAN 100.000, FRA 200.00) So all together roundabout 3,5 Million Units. Where has come the other 4.5 Million Sales?? But Billboard is a proper source. .--MontyPhyton 21:47, 9. January 2012 —Preceding undated comment added 20:50, 9 January 2012 (UTC).

No, Billboard just report what they get from her company or other newspapers. The only fully reliable source is the IFPI (and it says about 5 mil) and the World Chart (same- 5 mil). This article is a joke and it should not be so biassed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.138.15 (talk) 22:32, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Considering the amount of mistakes in general articles I read on the internet (journalism these days is very sloppy and lazy) then I weep for the future when we take VERIFIBILITY over obvious truth. the 5 - 5.5 sales figure has been banded about for months, I have never seen this '8 million' and if Billboard said it, they made a mistake, which is annoying as it now means Gaga's wiki page is glaringly wrong on a very big and important fact. The sophomore album is massively important for any big artist and the CORRECT sales figures are very important for music history!. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.186.228.9 (talk) 05:40, 10 January 2012 (UTC)

Guys, Gaga don't sell 23 million on the USA or 60 million WW.--Luisrafael7 (talk) 22:59, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Why am I unable to add the Japanese information for her album sales? Japan should be taken very seriously in this department, since it's one of the largest music markets in the world (CDs are much more expensive in Japan and still sell quite a lot). I posted sources with all the information I included, but it seems to have been rejected. Born This Way has sold more albums in Japan than everywhere except for US and UK with 658,000 copies. True it dropped out of the World Chart with about %+ million. Thw whole of this article is biassed and 'promotional' — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2.28.138.15 (talk) 22:29, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Billboard is definitely not a reliable source. I already saw them inflate sales just like here with Beyoncé's I Am... Sasha Fierce. They said it had sold at 1,6 million in the UK which was wrong; it was 1,4 in June 2011. Gaga fans, I respect you love her —I love her— but stop inflating sales. 109.15.46.23 (talk) 01:48, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

You considered the US, CAN, UK, but what about Asian sales? In Japan Born This Way sold 1.000.000 copies, and in Asia Lady Gaga has too many fans (just considering the 50.000 in Jakarta), there are so many regions that are full of fans. So, we can not say that the album sold 4.5, I'm pretty sure that the copies sold can reach 8.000.000 or less, it's a big number, but the copies sold aren't less that Seven Millions — Preceding unsigned comment added by Camix95 (talkcontribs) 10:29, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Dance In The Dark And Eh Eh

Dance In The Dark is not official single is only promotional single which was realise in Belgium (Novembert 9, 2009), Australia (July 26, 2010) and France (August 25, 2010). The same with Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) is only promotional single, realised in some countries in Europe and in Australia and New Zealand. Please, change these in discography! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.105.227.57 (talk) 19:19, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Born This Way

1) 'Born This Way' the album has not sold the amount listed in the UK :S 2) 'Born This Way' the single sold 625,000 copies in the UK, so should it not be certified as Platinum? http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/the-top-20-biggest-selling-singles-of-2011-revealed/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 176.251.100.196 (talk) 08:01, 21 June 2012 (UTC)

in answer to 2 the certification is different in each country depending on population in the UK for a single it is 600k and for an album it is 300k for platinum. for gold it is 400k for single and 100k for album and 200k for silver and 60k for album the UK is the only place that has a silver certification Mikala19 (talk) 14:09, 8 August 2012 (UTC)

Unusually low sales on Albums

Hello, someone has obviously changed Gaga's album sales numbers as The Fame has certainly sold over 500,000 copies worldwide and Born This Way has sold well above 250,000. Please can someone revert these back to the original numbers. Thanks --SNTMcentral (talk) 23:49, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Born This Way Sales

Adding "US Dance" to Singles Chart...

Would it be a good idea to add a column in the singles chart to show the peak position of her singles in the US Hot Dance/Club Songs Chart? I only suggest this because all 12 of her singles have reached #1 on that chart. — Preceding unsigned comment added by ThisGuyTony (talkcontribs) 23:58, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes it would. Someone should add it — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.38.160.204 (talk) 02:31, 16 August 2012 (UTC)

It wouldn't be a particularly good idea, because in order to add that to the table formatting, you'd be required to remove the chart info of another country. Would that be a better thing, as opposed to just adding "twelve No. 1's on the US Hot Dance/Club Songs Chart" along with a source in the intro? Homeostasis07 (talk) 01:14, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

I think you should add a column with the US Hot Dance Songs Chart - JJS — Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.38.160.204 (talk) 15:21, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

Beautiful, Dirty, Rich is listed as a single but it was a promotional single.. Shouldn't it be moved to the promo single section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mintblonde (talkcontribs) 23:24, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Adding Japan!

Japan really needs to be added to Gaga's discography. I'm aware that we can only have ten countries on the page that can represent sales and certifications. So, I propose we replace Ireland (a smaller country) with Japan (a much bigger country). I have several reason as to why I believe Ireland should be replaced with Japan.

1) We currently have six European countries being represented: Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, and the UK. Replacing Ireland with an Asian country would give a better picture of Gaga's 'worldwide' success.

2) According to IFPI 2010 data Japan is the largest music market in the world; while Ireland is only the 26th largest. It makes more sense to have the bigger music markets represented versus the smaller ones.

3) We have more data (sales figures and certifications) for Japan than we do for Ireland. Although we have certifications for both countries in studio albums, however, we don't have any single certifications from Ireland. Here's the data we have for Japan; "Just Dance" - Gold, "Poker Face" - Platinum, "Bad Romance" - Gold, "Telephone" - Gold, "Born This Way" - Platinum, "Judas" - Gold, "The Edge of Glory" - Gold. We have album sales figures from Japan - The Fame Monster with 577,000 copies sold and Born This Way with 658,554 copies sold - but there's nothing we have from Ireland.

I know that much discussion about this topic has led to a consensus but I think it's time for a change; and there's nothing wrong with change, right? Does anybody support or oppose this? Feedback would be greatly appreciated :) --Christianrxx (talk)

I'd like to add that Born This Way is one of the only 3 non-japanese songs to top the japan hot 100 and I'm pretty sure her other songs chart high over there too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.59.47.51 (talk) 05:57, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

Worldwide Born This Way Sales

According to Billboard, which is a VERY reliable source, Born This Way has sold over 8,000,000 worldwide as of October 2011. Please add this information, Thanks.

This is difficult; Billboard is indeed reliable, but more recently published (2012) sources [2][3] say "nearly 6 million". I think that is why two citations are given to the 6 million figure. Adabow (talk) 21:24, 23 August 2013 (UTC)
Those are true more updated sources, but the only problem is that artists' own websites aren't always the best for sources and ticket sale websites aren't very great of sources either. Out of those three sources, Billboard is probably the most trustworthy (it might not be the most recent) but it is the most reliable of the three. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.140.79 (talk) 04:24, 24 August 2013 (UTC)
It probably is, and it has the backing of Nielsen's measurement services to provide an independent analysis.—Kww(talk) 23:21, 10 September 2013 (UTC)
How curious. We'll go with Billboard then. Out of curiosity, does Nielsen SS have access to worldwide data? Adabow (talk) 05:46, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
I'd be lying if I said I knew the details of the contracts between Billboard and Nielsen. I think we can trust Billboard not to make up numbers, though.—Kww(talk) 05:49, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
I'm on the fence here tbh. My mind says that Born This Way has not passed 8 million global sales, but I cannot ignore reliable source like Billboard also, the alma mater of music articles. Curious though, have we tried finding out if the Billboard report is not a mirror from any other website? —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 10:40, 11 September 2013 (UTC)
Jake Coyle, an AP writer, gets the byline. He's a listed contributor at Billboard.—Kww(talk) 19:24, 12 September 2013 (UTC)
Hmm that makes sense then. Billboard would not report a mirror anyways though. We can put it up. —Indian:BIO · [ ChitChat ] 18:35, 14 September 2013 (UTC)
The issue I have with the Nielsen measurement services rationale is that the Billboard source doesn't suggest or even indicate that the 8 million figure is Nielsen SoundScan-confirmed. I don't ever recall coming across a Nielsen-confirmed worldwide sales figure for an individual album. It's doubtful that they're given access to any such material, aside from the kind of raw data they release every year. Oricon have access to sales figures in Japan only. The Official Charts Company, Music Week and the BPI have access to sales statistics from the UK. BMVI in Germany, etc. I've never come across any of these organisations reporting in detail on sales figures from another territory. There'd be exclusivity issues in doing so: each of these organisations have paid huge sums for the technology and licences to enable SoundScan in their home territories, and they often charge their own members for access to this info. The RIAJ or IFPI wouldn't allow Billboard to swipe their stats for nothing, so worldwide sharing is fairly unlikely. The point being: Billboard is no more a credible source for worldwide album sales than Oricon, or OCC, or BMVI, etc. Homeostasis07 (talk) 19:51, 16 September 2013 (UTC)
