I was bold enough to correct the lyrics with accents, misunderstood words, mispellings, etc. etc. I hope no one's offended. Saludos--Orgullomoore 23:56, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Just a guess, but aren't lyrics copyrighted material? Removed text follows:

[Sanz]
Ay padrita mía, guárdate la poesía
Guárdate la alegría pa' 'ti

[Shakira]
No pido que todos los días sean de sol
No pido que todos los viernes sean de fiesta
Tampoco te pido que vuelvas rogando perdón
Si lloras con los ojos secos
Y hablando de ella

Ay amor, me duele tanto

[Sanz]
Me duele tanto

[Shakira]
Que te fueras sin decir a dónde
Ay amor, fue una tortura...
Perderte

[Sanz]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor

[Shakira]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo

[Sanz]

[Sanz]
Ay amor, me duele tanto, me duele tanto
Que no creas más en mis promesas

[Shakira]
Ay amor

[Sanz]
Es una tortura

[Shakira]
Perderte

[Sanz]
Yo sé que no he sido un santo
Pero lo puedo arreglar, amor

[Shakira]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo

[Sanz]
Sólo de errores se aprende
Y hoy se que tuyo es mi corazón

[Shakira]
Mejor te guardas todo eso
A otro perro con ese hueso
Y nos decimos adios

[Sanz]
No te bajes, no te rajes
Oye negrita, mira, no te rajes

[Shakira]
No sólo de pan vive el hombre
Y no de excusas vivo yo.

[Sanz]
Sólo de errores se aprende
Y hoy sé que tuyo es mi corazón

[Shakira]
AAaaay... AAaaay... AAaaay... Ay Ay
Ay todo lo que he hecho por ti
Fue una tortura perderte
Me duele tanto que sea así

Sigue llorando perdón
Yo ya no voy a llorar... por ti

SNL Xmas 2005 details?

[edit]

Stuck on the northern side of the 49th Parallel as I am, and so largely insulated from American airplay, my first exposure to this song was on SNL's Xmas show back in December; La Tortura was the second song of the show, and the finale, and it blew me away; I remember working at the computer when it started, only to have my head turned and riveted to the tube by Sanz's singing, which blew me away with its ferocity and pasíon (if that's the right word). Thanks very much for posting the lyrics as I'm intending on covering this song; as good as a gringo can anyway (well, not exactly gringo since canadienses aren't exactly gringos, but....)[yes, you are a gringo]; I'm a rhythm guitarist and Sanz's rhythms are juicy-plus. Why couldn't I have been born in Spain, Peru, Mexico, Brazil? Sigh.....

Anyway, would have just inserted the mention of the SNL appearance/performance but not sure where to put it, or if there's a given format that should be observed.Skookum1 05:27, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Translation.

[edit]

I have added my own translation of the song. It is a phrase for phrase translation keeping all of the meaning of the original song. I wasn't sure how to translate padrita. Does it mean Lord or Father in heaven? I wasn't sure so I just wrote in father to be safe. I only just completed my second semester of spanish so a native speaker should check my translation.--God Ω War 17:20, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also for this stanza...

Mejor te guardas todo eso A otro perro con ese hueso Y nos decimos adios

I wrote a different dog with that bone. Does she really mean a diffent bitch with your penis? Should this be changed?--God Ω War 17:23, 6 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

First of all, it isn't said 'padrita', but 'payita' (diminutive for 'paya', non-gypsy). Alejandro Sanz comes from Andalucía, where the gypsies have traditionally had a big influence on the local musical folklore. Flamenco, for example, is a gypsy dance. As for the translation of the line 'a otro perro con ese hueso': I don't think it's been intended to say anything related to bitches or penises :D A otro perro con ese hueso (give that bone to another dog) is a Spanish saying meaning something like 'I don't buy that', 'it has bells on it', 'pull the other one', etc.

Greetings from Spain. Will.--62.42.21.111 14:46, 19 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:535.jpg

[edit]

Image:535.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Orphaned references in La Tortura

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of La Tortura's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "Pareles":

  • From Fijación Oral, Vol. 1: Jon Pareles (23 June 2005). "New CD's". The New York Times. Retrieved 23 May 2013.
  • From Oral Fixation, Vol. 1 & 2: Jon Pareles (23 June 2005). "New CD's". The New York Times. The New York Times Company. Retrieved 23 May 2013.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:51, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I'll have a review posted for this within the next day or two. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 17:33, 25 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

11JORN, the review is posted below. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 02:17, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Well-written
  • I made a few minor copyedits, feel free to review them.
  • Shakira doesn't need to be called "the singer". We can just say "Shakira" or "she".
I used "the singer" so "Shakira" and "she" don't get too repetitive. Alex reach me! 16:51, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As it's written, it makes it read more awkwardly. It looks like the author is looking for any way to avoid saying "Shakira" (which is what's happening). It's better to be a little repetitive than to interrupt the flow like this. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 18:57, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thebiguglyalien I respect your opinion, but I don't think it interrupts the flow. Anyway, I have removed all "the singer" occurrences. Alex reach me! 21:35, 27 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lead:

  • There are two sentences in a row with the word "also".

Background:

  • she wanted to work on an album – This doesn't really tell us anything. It can just say she hadn't decided whether to release the next album in Spanish or English.
  • the singer wanted to release its follow-up – Again, this is just telling us that she wanted to make an album, but we already know that she makes albums.
  • This would be her first since Dónde Están los Ladrones? (1998) – Her first what? Her first Spanish language album? Her first English/Spanish project?
  • a little girl but a giant woman who lives madly in love with her dreams and this song is not only an anecdote that proves that the obsession is the proof of love towards the characters of her songs – Are you sure this is an accurate translation? It's meandering and it doesn't make sense in some parts.
The source wrote the quotes totally wrong, so I have added the original source for the quotes. Alex reach me! 16:51, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Recording and composition:

  • The first two sentences of this section use the word "also" three times.
  • According to Shakira herself, – This doesn't need to say "herself".
  • you better keep all that to another dog with that bone and we say goodbye – This doesn't sound right.

Critical response:

  • Spence D. from IGN noted that – Avoid "noted" for opinions. It can make it sound like we're saying he's right.

Music video:

  • Shakira declared that she really liked his work, and as she felt he was "a very sensitive man and he lived in Spain". – This doesn't make sense in this context.
  • the priest gave her the go-ahead – Informal
  • From that moment on, they remember things the pair had done – "From that moment on" doesn't make sense here.
Verifiable with no original research

All sources appear reliable. A better source than an Amazon page would be preferred to confirm its German release, but it's not that important.

  • Does the citation [1] Cobo (2005) link to the right article? It looks like a different issue.
  • There are a lot of quotations in this article. It's generally better to paraphrase when possible.
  • It might be a good idea to add the original Spanish quotes as footnotes so readers can see what the original wording was.
  • Some details of the music video are unsourced. If it's based off watching the music video, we can only say what we see on screen:
    • Sanz' new girlfriend's apartment – How do we know she's a "new girlfriend"?
    • she cries when she starts cutting the onions, but he does not know it – How do we know what he knows?
    • while Shakira reveals her alter-ego dancing erotically on the building's roof – What does this mean? How do we know that it's her "alter-ego"?
    • covered with black paint – Is it paint? At least one of the sources I checked called it something else.

Spot checks:

  • [2] Montgomery (2005) – Does this support that Laundry Service brought about her crossover success?
I have added a new source which also supports this. Alex reach me! 16:51, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • [19] Diaz-Zuniga (2014) – The song ends as she finally leaves him, despite his pleas, by saying she will not cry over him is copied almost exactly from the source.
  • [30] Univision (2006) Green tickY
  • [68] Gell (2006) Green tickY
  • [72] Castaneda (2013) – This just says that it was the first Spanish language performance, not the first non-English performance. Diaz-Zuniga (2014) supports this claim though, so that one could be added.
Broad in its coverage

The "Background" section goes into a lot of detail about the entire album. A few sentences explaining the album is fine, but this article should mostly be about the song. Most of this belongs on the article Fijación Oral, Vol. 1. This section also has a lot of information about the recording and release, which should be in their own sections. This section should be about things before they started recording.

Neutral

No ideas are given undue weight.

Stable

No recent disputes.

Illustrated

Both of the non-free images and the non-free sound file have valid non-free use rationales. All other images are Creative Commons. All images have relevant captions. There's no exact rule for when an image is relevant and I'm not going to count it against the review, but I'm not sure about the relevance of an image of Enrique Iglesias, who's only mentioned in passing.

Thebiguglyalien, thank you for this review. I have made some additional changes to the article, which are listed below:
  • The "Background" section was renamed to "Background and development" and rewritten, omitting bits about the album and adding info about the song's recording.
  • The "Recording and composition" section was renamed to "Composition" and I left only the composition credits and info about the song's musical style and lyrics.
  • I have rewritten much of the music video's synopsis considering your notes, please take a look.
