Super-Hacked Statistics and Name Change and Age Change

The wikipedia page currently has unrealistic statistics of mbappe, who did not score 150 goals, and his name changed and he's not 31. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 175.156.97.204 (talk) 12:03, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

In the subsection "Style of play and reception" under section "Player profile," it is incorrectly stated that Mbappe has been clocked at a speed of 44.7 km/h. That is Usain Bolt's top speed during his world record 100m sprint. The article cited as the source lists this as well. Mbappe has only been clocked at the lower speed of 36 km/h. Please correct this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:5810:3400:3591:CD65:EE66:731C (talk) 21:24, 6 August 2020 (UTC)

Not done A source for the 44.7 speed was found.  Ganbaruby! (Say hi!) 13:51, 5 August 2020 (UTC)
The cited source is incredibly dubious and merely a twitter post. There is not actual evidence that he was timed at this speed, which would make Mbappe as fast as Usain Bolt, which is false. The very next citation actually contradicts the incorrect assertion that Mbappe has ever been clocked at 44.7 km/h. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:5810:3400:3591:CD65:EE66:731C (talk) 21:54, 6 August 2020 (UTC)
Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. The source in the article for 44.7km/h says:

The 18-year-old scored the final goal in injury time, and recorded a speed of 44.7 kmph on his way to finding the net. To put that into context, his average speed during the game was 36 kmph, only slightly slower than that of Usain Bolt when setting the 100m sprint record
— https://www.si.com/soccer/2017/12/11/kylian-mbappe-records-frightening-speed-statistics-paris-saint-germains-win-over-lille

It doesn't say this is Bolt's speed, it clearly states this was Mbappé's top speed; it does, however, say that his average speed was 36km/h, and Mbappé's average speed is just slower than Bolt's. As far as I can tell, this doesn't contradict what the article currently says (Mbappé has been clocked at speeds of 44.7 km/h (27.8 mph)). Seagull123 Φ 21:36, 9 August 2020 (UTC)
This is a little absurd. The source is from a tweet. The evidence is clearly not reliable. There should be no further required rationale to remove the assertion in the article. A tweet is a self-published text without peer reviewed oversight. It is not remotely a viable source. Also, citation 98 in the wikipedia article is 3 years more recent and contradicts that Mbappe has run 44.7km/h. This is incredibly easy to see and find. It's baffling to me that this incorrect information has not yet been removed from the article. Seagull123 seems to have completely misunderstood what was said.
From citation 98: "The forward now has another accolade to his name, with Le Figaro clocking Mbappé's top speed at 36km/h (22.4mph), which puts him clear of Inaki Williams in second and Arsenal's former AS Saint-Etienne forward Aubameyang in third.
Mbappé's top speed this season is still some way short of Usain Bolt's 44.72km/h (27.8mph), clocked when the Jamaican set the 100m world record at 9.58 seconds in 2009, but in football, it seems he is in a league of his own."
It is very clear that the tweet is incorrect and that 36km/h is Mbappe's top speed, not average. 44.7km/h is Usain Bolt's top speed. That is why the number is relevant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2604:2D80:5810:3400:A1F3:A80A:F0B4:511F (talk) 04:37, 11 August 2020 (UTC)
Done. I think it's safe to say that the SI piece is unreliable, even though SI generally is. They give no indication where that figure came from, other than the tweet, which certainly isn't enough on its own. Moreover, the "average speed of 36 km/h" statistic is nonsense on its face. All this, combined with the more detailed information from the source above adds up to an agreement to remove from me. –Deacon Vorbis (carbon • videos) 13:28, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

Comments

@Paul Vaurie: Alright, the article looks almost ready for promotion, in my opinion! I just have a few doubts that hold me back to give it a straight pass, but those issues should all be easy to solve. Before we get started, I'll just note that I've boldly tried to copy-edit the article myself, just to make some general fixes, although you already did a great job at structuring the article and filling it with the most important details!

Prose and grammar

The text generally looks fine, although there are some phrases that are either oddly-structured, or in need of punctuation and better connection. Let me give you some examples:

- "During his childhood, he had a nanny whose entire family were AC Milan fans from whom Mbappé once received Robinho's number 70 shirt as a gift." This phrase needs to be articulated better... What about, "As a child, Mbappé received Robinho's AC Milan shirt as a gift from his nanny's family, who were supporters of the Italian club"? (On a side note, mentioning Robinho might be controversial, given the crimes he's committed).

- "He ultimately settled on Monaco." Not a syntax error, but I think you might as well move this phrase straight to the "Monaco" paragraph, just to make a better connection.

- "Mbappé therefore became Monaco's youngest-ever first-team player, aged 16 years and 347 days, breaking Thierry Henry's record set 21 years previously." I think the latter half might be better phrased as "breaking the previous record set by Thierry Henry in 1994".

- "In an interview with CNN, Vadim Vasilyev, AS Monaco's vice-president, who played a key role in Mbappé signing his first professional contract with the Ligue 1 club [...]" I don't think you need to specify that, really, as it would make the statement too redundant...

- "Mbappé credited fellow Monaco striker Radamel Falcao [...] traits which Mbappé noted he lacked." I'm pretty sure the last phrase means that Mbappé lacked those traits, not Falcao, but I think it should be made even clearer...

- "According to PSG recruiter Luis Ferrer, part of Mbappé's decision was influenced by a speech given manager Unai Emery at the Mbappés' home over the summer." So, Emery convinced him to sign for PSG, right? Also, what did you mean for "recruiter" exactly? Was it a scout, or a different figure?

- "Mbappé capped his debut senior season at Monaco by scoring five times for France as they won the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. His second-half brace in the 3–1 victory over Portugal in the semi-finals had helped his team reach the final." I think it's not necessary to address his debut season with Monaco here, since you're focusing on his international career. Also, he was included in the Team of the Tournament at those same Euros, so it could be useful to address it.

- "On 30 June 2018, he was named man of the match in a 4–3 win over Argentina, scoring twice and suffering a foul in the box which resulted in Antoine Griezmann opening the score from a penalty kick." I think the penalty foul should go before his brace, not after.

- "At the age of 17, he had a lean frame, but was able to cope thanks to his physical strength and athleticism. By the time he turned 22 years old, he had physically developed into an elite goalscorer." Honestly, I think this whole statement might be kind of redundant, as well, since the same characteristics are described right above...

- "On 22 February 2018, Mbappé was joined by two of Africa's greatest strikers, former AC Milan forward and current Liberia President George Weah, and former Chelsea and Ivory Coast forward Didier Drogba [...]" I think this could be all summed up by just writing, "joined by former strikers George Weah and Didier Drogba". That way, it would be easier to respect WP:NPOV: plus, information about Weah and Drogba are already easily accessible from their respective articles.

Sourcing

I think you've done a good job at citing references, although there are some instances where a single phrase has up to four-five citations attached, which looks a bit excessive to me. For a similar reason, I think you should provide inline citations for each of "Mbappé's idols growing up", just so you can avoid having an overload at the end of the phrase.

On a side note, there are a few sites/portals I'm not familiar with (Dzair Daily, 20 Minutes, 20 Minutes, Squawka, sportsmax.tv, myKhel, etc.): can you confirm they're reliable enough? Also, I've noticed that Mike Christie had suggested you not to use Bleacher Report as a source in his own review of this article, so be careful about that... Finally, citations #127 and #291 have been marked as dead links, so you might need to replace them.

Side notes

These suggestions actually aren't strictly related to GA status, but I think you could address at least two more notable events in either the "Personal life" or the "Outside football" section: firstly, the fact Mbappé received the Knight of the Legion of Honour order in 2018 (which is actually cited down in the "Honours" section"); secondly, his involvement in the series of scandals that brought to Noël Le Graët's resignation from his position at the French Football Federation. These are just quick-fire ideas, though, and you can work on those even after the end of this review, should you wish to do so.

Anyway, I hope my review will be clear and on point enough: feel free to address any other issue you might encounter! Oltrepier (talk) 14:59, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

@Oltrepier: Thanks! I will do this very soon. Paul Vaurie (talk) 17:36, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
@Paul Vaurie: You're very welcome. Just make sure to ping me when you're done, just to make sure I don't miss your message! Oltrepier (talk) 21:02, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
About this: "Mbappé credited fellow Monaco striker Radamel Falcao [...] traits which Mbappé noted he lacked." I'm pretty sure the last phrase means that Mbappé lacked those traits, not Falcao, but I think it should be made even clearer...
I don't know how to make this clear without making it redundant. I personally don't think it's unclear, but what I did to clarify things was outright remove traits which Mbappé noted he lacked. I could not find a better way to write that; saying "traits which Mbappé noted Mbappé lacked" doesn't work. Paul Vaurie (talk) 00:48, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
Also, I completely disagree with Mike Christie; Bleacher Report is a website reliable like any other. Paul Vaurie (talk) 02:22, 31 August 2023 (UTC)
@Oltrepier: I have addressed every point in the prose and grammar section. From the sourcing section, I have edited the "idols" part with inline sources, and replaced a Dzair Daily source with The Athletic. However, I don't see what makes Squawka Football, 20 Minutes, sportsmax.tv, or myKher inherently unreliable for purely factual coverage of statistics. If there was analysis, then a more thorugh investigation would be have been nice. Paul Vaurie (talk) 08:16, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

@Paul Vaurie: Thank you for acting swiftly and addressing those issues! That phrase is perfectly fine now, so no worries.

About the sources I mentioned, I just didn't know them well enough to judge them, to be honest; on the other hand, Bleacher Report received criticism for his reportedly careless approach to content creation, and I don't know how much things have changed since six years ago. Still, if you're sure they're good enough to do the job, I'm cool with it.

Anyway, I think the article is good to go now, since we should have covered all of the main concerning aspects: apart from my previous side note, I would just suggest you to stick to a maximum of two-three citations per statement, whenever it's possible, so you can focus more on the quality of the sources, rather than the quantity (I hope it makes sense...). Well done! Oltrepier (talk) 14:06, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

@Oltrepier: Thank you for the very swift review as well! I highly appreciate it. I'll take your comments into account and will try to help improve the article if I can in the future. Thanks again, all the best and happy editing! Paul Vaurie (talk) 15:32, 31 August 2023 (UTC)

I'll review this. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 15:32, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

I'll make notes as I read through; I may not be able to finish today.

  • The Daily Express is a generally unreliable source. For the sports facts you're using it for I'm not very worried, but can you find a better source?
  • Similarly we try not to cite Twitter, except where needed to support something like the fact that a tweet occurred. Again I would think a better source could be found.
  • I'm not familiar with SB Nation; it seems to be partly fan written, and the post you're citing seems to be a blog post. See discussion here. Can we replace this, or can you show the contributor is a recognized expert in the field?
  • For Bleacher Report, see here; can better sources be found?
  • What makes neymarjr.com a reliable source?
  • What makes wittyfutty.com a reliable source?
  • The lead is a little short for an article of this length; I think it would be easy to add a few more details and beef it up a little.
  • I won't hold up GA for this, because the prose requirements for GA are only that the prose is clear and concise, but there is a fair amount of proseline. See the 2018-19 paragraphs for some examples: at one point eight sentences in a row start with "On <date>, ...". This would prevent the article becoming featured, if you decide to try for that.
  • Why do we need the long quote from La Brune? We haven't actually quoted whatever it is he's responding to, and even it was prompted by Mbappé's decision to stay with PSG there seems no reason to go off on a paragraph-long tangent about the spat between La Liga and Ligue 1.
  • "a sparkling performance": a bit too POV. Something like "strong" would be OK. Similarly for "his prodigious talent"; I would just say "In 2017, Nike launched Mbappé's personalised football boots...".
  • Seven instances of "also" in the style of play section -- again not a problem for GA, but I would recommend eliminating most or all of them.
  • Suggest cutting the sentence about Ethan from the "Personal life" section -- Ethan's connection to PSG is already mentioned earlier in the article, and if we want to keep this factoid it would better placed there.

Overall this is in pretty good shape; the main issue is the unreliable sources. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 17:51, 8 August 2022 (UTC)

@Mike Christie: Hey, thanks for the review! I completely forgot about this, sorry. I don’t have a computer right now because it’s in repair, so I don’t know how long it will be until I can edit Wikipedia properly again, because right now I’m only making small edits on my phone. I’ll fix these things you listed for me eventually. Also, I’m sure there are plenty of other editors of this article who would be willing to help. mbappe

Kylian Mbappé Lottin (French pronunciation: [kiljan (ɛ)mbape lɔtɛ̃]; born 20 December 1998) is a French professional footballer who plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the France national team. Considered one of the best players in the world, and reportedly the highest-paid, Mbappé is renowned for his dribbling abilities, exceptional speed, and finishing.[4] 197.229.6.217 (talk) 01:20, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

As mentioned by Mbappé in his interview before his decline to move in 2015 his teammate Rabieh in which he played with was the one who encouraged him to continue playing football and chasing what he loves as a career although Rabieh did not continue his career as a football player however his contribution has a huge impact on the football society and on Mbappe. 46.185.222.71 (talk) 00:26, 10 November 2022 (UTC)

Should there be an article link to List of international goals scored by Kylian Mbappé

I think there should be a link to List of international goals scored by Kylian Mbappé since he has scored 38 goals and is pretty much guaranteed he is going to score more goals in his career, that is a lot for an article. CostcoantimationsS (talk) 04:46, 20 May 2023 (UTC)

Why does it falsely say on wiki that mbappe often plays as a winger when Mbappe has played as a striker for most of his career. Most of Mbappes games in his career has came as a striker in a front two

as the title says mbappe does not often play as a winger lol. He's the striker at PSG. If he plays on the wings (which he doesn't most of the time) then who's the striker?

You guys need to change it to "a versatile player, Mbappe often plays as a striker but can and has played out wide too. Mbappes former teammate Sidibe said that Mbappes best position is a left striker in a front two"

Heres a link to prove it: https://www.getfootballnewsfrance.com/2020/djibril-sidibe-on-kylian-mbappes-best-position-left-centre-forward-in-a-two/ Playitdontrateit (talk) 10:44, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

On Transfermarkt it says that Mbappe has played 197 games as a striker, 61 games as a left winger and 57 games as a right winger. It's time for you lot to put that Mbappe "often plays as a striker but can play out wide" as you guys falsely wrote that mbappe often plays on the wings when he mainly has played as a striker

Heres the link to mbappe games played in each position. Hes a striker, man https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kylian-mbappe/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/342229/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id= Playitdontrateit (talk) 10:49, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Mbappe in a press conference during euro 2021 talking about Giroud: "Frankly what he said doesnt bother me. I'm a striker..."

mbappe said it around 5ish seconds into this YouTube video. Here's the link: https://youtube/97zhageGkDg

I told you lot man. Mbappes played most of his games as a striker and he calls himself one too. Time to change it to a versatile player, mbappe often plays as striker who is comfortable playing on both flanks when needed to. Playitdontrateit (talk) 10:56, 26 May 2023 (UTC)

Mbappe's transfer to Al-Hilal

Will this change be made onto the page? Or will we have to wait until Mbappe himself signs the contract for the club? Gyroscopical (talk) 10:15, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

@Gyroscopical: So far, all that's happened is that Al-Hilal have made an offer and PSG have accepted it - there is every chance that there will not even be a transfer to report. The article currently reflects this reality. For a transfer to go ahead, Mbappe would need to agree to whatever contract offer is made to him by Al-Hilal, which is far from a certainty. If Mbappe does agree to move to Al-Hilal, his current team will only be updated once the move is confirmed and reported in reliable sources. WJ94 (talk) 10:25, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
An editor has repeatedly made a disruptive edit (also reverting) related to the breaking news that Al-Hilal has submitted a bid for Mbappé. Ok, the edit warring here needs to stop. It is not a rumour to say that PSG have received a bid from Al-Hilal; this is well supported by reliable sources and deserves a mention in the article. WJ94 (talk) 09:13, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

There are lots of reports and rumours around various destinations for Mbappe at the moment and where he wants to go; the truth is we don't know what is going to happen.

Rumor mentioned as fact

> On 3 January 2024, it was announced that Mbappé had reached an agreement to join Real Madrid in the following season after refusing to extend his stay at his current club.

The source linked here only talks about a rumor/report by a few sources, not by any means as an official announcement. Even if everyone knows he's most likely going to Real Madrid neither the player nor PSG/Real have made a formal announcement—it was only announced that Mbappé was leaving PSG by the end of this season, and not to which club.

If we're not taking Fabrizio Romano's reports (which are almost always accurate) as fact neither should we take this as as fact either, much less so as an "announcement."

We should probably remove this or at the very least heavily edit it. 190.103.58.14 (talk) 00:31, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

I have edited that section to indicate that this was a report from a news outlet, rather than an announcement by the player/club. I have also fixed the timeline around these events which was slightly wrong. WJ94 (talk) 11:49, 17 February 2024 (UTC)

Mbappe Transfer – What Number mbappe jersey

mbappe jersey

How many jerseys will get at Real – why drag Ronaldo into the discussion? Because, Mbappe is also the one who is associated with the number 7 jersey. Since joining PSG in 2018, he has been wearing the number 7 jersey until now.

But it is not sure if Mbappe will get this jersey in Real. Vinicius Junior is wearing the number 7 jersey there. And the number 7 jersey left by Ronaldo has been kept well by one of the best stars of Real.

How many jerseys will the 25-year-old Mbappe wear in Real Madrid? According to Spanish media reports, Mbappe is going to get the number 10 jersey at Real Madrid, which is the jersey previously worn by his native legend Zinedine Zidane. Ultimatestream01 (talk) 14:37, 19 February 2024 (UTC)

New club on June

As we're aware, Kylian Mbappé is anticipated to leave his current club at the end of the season, which officially concludes on 30 June. It's likely he'll be announced by his new club in the early week of June. To avoid confusion, should his current club remain in his bio until 30th, or should it be replaced with his new club's name after the official announcement by the new club? I've encountered this issue before and would appreciate your expert insights. Thank you! @Kante4 @GiantSnowman @Mattythewhite EndzoneEnthusiast 04:11, 14 May 2024 (UTC)

The anchor text where the link appears is [Kylian Mbappe: PSG forward agrees contract extension with Ligue 1 champions]

The broken URL is [1].

I found a similar page that even has a link from Wikipedia if you want to update the link.
