Meaning of name?

[edit]

When I was trying to create a link for Mala Vas, I started wondering what these place names mean. In particular, Knežja Vas and Mala Vas both contain "Vas," but an online Slovene dictionary defines this only as "you," so these names would appear to mean "Royal You" and "Little You," which can't be right. Can anyone clarify the meaning of "Vas"? RCTodd (talk) 12:13, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The word vas means 'village'. Doremo (talk) 12:24, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! As the word for "village," apparently it has a diacritic over the A ("vás"), which may be why my first searches didn't find it. Thanks for adding it to the article! RCTodd (talk) 15:57, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. The acute is only marked in dictionary-style reference works; it's not part of regular Slovene orthography. Doremo (talk) 16:07, 23 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
