The Pashtuns, originally from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Afghanistan, the Federally Administered Tribal Areas and northern Balochistan, are now the city's second largest ethnic group after Muhajirs, these Pashtuns are settled in Karachi from decades. [1][2] With as high as 7 million by some estimates the city of Karachi in Pakistan has the largest concentration of urban Pakhtun population in the world, including 50,000 registered Afghan refugees in the city, [3][4] meaning there are more Pashtuns in Karachi than in any other city in the world.[5] As per current demographic ratio Pashtuns are about 25% of Karachi's population.[6]

Demographic history
This sentence in the Demographic history section doesn't make sense and so, I want to change the sentence, 'Most properties vacated by Hindus, who left Karachi due to the new settlements made by these refugees, were granted to Urdu-speaking Muslim migrants through claims on behalf of the properties they claimed of leaving behind in India.[82]' to 'Most properties vacated by Hindus, who fled[7] Karachi to avoid getting killed by muslim migrants - muhajirs, who arrived from India, were granted to the Urdu-speaking Muslim migrants through claims that they left behind properties in India.[82]'. The article is semi-protected, so I request someone else to do it.-Khabboos (talk) 15:55, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

In demographic history there is an un realistic personal opinion based 7 million figure for Pashtun population contradicting 1.2 million in census. It is nationalists edits. Lets be Logical, Karachi population in Last census was 9.2 Million . If u assume Pashtun are 7 million and 25% then karachi population in 28 Million which is big big lie and never supported by any source. Thanks 39.47.149.18 (talk) 15:38, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
No it is sourced Markoffensive (talk) 16:43, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
But sources is not reliable because they are written newspaper article of two Pashtoon nationalists not validated by scientific census process. 39.47.149.18 (talk) 18:46, 29 October 2014 (UTC)
Same applies in your case, There is no source for 19% Punjabi. it is only 14% as per Census you repeating every now & then. Nationalist label can be pasted on your profile very easily. how can you prove 19%? Esatesa (talk) 17:03, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
Sir, 14% standard Punjabi plus 5% Western Punjabi dialects i.e. Saraiki 2.5% Hindko 1.5% and Potwari- Pahari 1% equates to 19% (ALL CENSUS FIGURES). Since census is only scientifically reliable source so how can Pashtun be estimated 25% contradicting 9% as per census. I am neither nationalist nor i will allow nationalism on WP. 39.47.186.180 (talk) 17:19, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

This: "Following independence, and the massive influx of Muslim refugees who fled from anti-Muslim pograms in India" in the Cityscape section really seems like attempt to push a narrative, in a section that it really doesn't need to be in.
A more neutral line would be something like, "Following independence, and the massive influx of Muslim refugees from the partitioning of India conflicts," There were anti-Muslim, anti-Hindu, anti-Sikh programs, not just one. It could include a link to the Partition of India page, which would be a much broader picture of what was going on, and proper historical context.

I feel all the reference to "Anti Muslim Pogrom" needs to be removed. It is just to instigate feelings. At the time of partition of India there were roits against Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims. Karachi had around 30% Hindu population in 1947. Due to Anti Hindu roits they have to leave their homes. So better approach will be to tell both side of story or mentioning "Partition of India" should be enough.
All the reference to "Anti Muslim Pogrom" or "Anti Muslim Program" should be changed to "partition of India" 119.73.111.252 (talk) 11:18, 15 April 2015 (UTC)

BEST EATING OUT SPOTS
Karachi is known for its beaches and its food streets, there are a number or food streets that provide the best of local and international cuisines. The Boat Basin food street located in clifton is perhaps the most well known food street followed closely by the Burns Road food street, which is better known for local delicacies. The relatively newly established food streets at Port Grand and "Do Darya" provide a refreshing alternative to food lovers in Karachi — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jojiusman (talk • contribs) 07:48, 15 May 2015 (UTC)

Karachi (Sindhi: ڪراچي, Urdu: کراچی / ALA-LC: Karācī IPA: [kəˈrɑːˌtʃi] ( listen)) is capital of province Sindh as well as the largest and most populous metropolitan city of Pakistan and the 2nd-largest city in the world by population.[7] It is also the main seaport and financial centre of the country. Karachi is also known as City of Lights mainly due to city's night life, for which it is famous as the city which never sleeps. Karachi metro has an estimated population of over 23.5 million people as of 2013,[1] and area of approximately 3,527 km2 (1,362 sq mi),[8][9] resulting in a density of more than 6,000 people per square kilometre (15,500 per square mile).[10]
Karachi is the 7th largest[11][12] urban agglomeration in the world and the largest city in the Muslim world.[13] It is Pakistan's centre of banking, industry, economic activity and trade and is home to Pakistan's largest corporations, including those involved in textiles, shipping, automotive industry, entertainment, the arts, fashion, advertising, publishing, software development and medical research. The city is a hub of higher education in South Asia and the Muslim world.[14]
Karachi is also ranked as a beta world city.[15][16] It was the capital of Pakistan until Islamabad was constructed as a capital to spread development evenly across the country and to prevent it from being concentrated in Karachi.[17] Karachi is the location of the Port of Karachi and Port Bin Qasim, two of the region's largest and busiest ports. After the independence of Pakistan, the city population increased dramatically when hundreds of thousands of Muslim Muhajirs from India and from other parts of South Asia came to settle in Karachi.[18] 119.157.216.180 (talk) 20:21, 24 July 2015 (UTC)

Edit request on 20 December 2012 -- LARGEST CITY / URBAN AREA
This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request. |
This has come up before, and IMO, the statements about Karachi being the largest city or 11th largest urban area are simply too controversial to keep in this article. The 21M population stated in the article is from the preliminary census results of 2012. However, all secondary sources that rank cities use older data, mostly extrapolating from the 1998 Pakistan census. If the 21M is correct, Karachi would be amongst the top 5 metro areas in the world, so there's basically an internal contradiction in this article.
I suggest we remove these lines, and perhaps add something like "Karachi is amongst the largest metropolitan areas in the world". I know this is a bit of a "weasel word" solution, but I think its the best solution until the census results become official, and secondary sources like the UN start using the new numbers in their rankings.
- This issue has come up again. Although there are conflicting reports, Karachi is one of the larger metropolitan areas in the world, as measured by population. There are several larger cities, so the article needs correction. I am removing the false statement that Karachi is "the second largest city in the world."Fconaway (talk) 00:21, 6 January 2016 (UTC)
- Again, it became necessary to remove another incorrect statement that Karachi is " ...the largest and most populous metropolitan city in the world." This puffery conflicts with other information in this article. It is not backed by reliable secondary sources. The mayor and the chamber of commerce have a local bias, and as such are not reliable sources. See: Metropolis, which considers "Tokyo the world's largest metropolis." Hello,
I would like to request 2 changes, the first in the introductory sentence.
CHANGE #1 "Karachi (Urdu: کراچی / ALA-LC: Karācī IPA: [kəˈrɑːˌtʃi] ( listen)) is the largest and most populous metropolitan city in the world[13] "
Karachi is neither the largest by area, nor the most populous metropolitan city in the world. The citation [13] used as reference has no statistical backing and has only one sentence without proof or citation stating that it is the largest and most populous metropolitan city in the world. Instead it should read "..largest and most populous metropolitan city in Pakistan"
Below are a few reputable links for population size of cities none of which shows Karachi is even close to the largest
http://www.worldatlas.com/citypops.htm (updated March 2016) http://www.newgeography.com/content/004841-largest-1000-cities-earth-world-urban-areas-2015-edition (updated Feb 2 2015) http://www.citymetric.com/skylines/where-are-largest-cities-world-1051 (updated May 19 2015)
CHANGE #2 The statistical sidebar showing the Population Rank as No. 1 should be changed to No. 7, in fact citation [6] used as proof of the population size of Karachi even shows it being ranked #7.
The citation used ([13]) for the introductory statement and the No. 1 population ranking in the stats sidebar are the same and show no proof of statistical or factual value and is neither a reputable international news organization nor a statistical analysis site focused on geographical, city or population data such as the links provided. The changes should be taken into consideration by that fact alone. Claims without proper reference should be left out.
Thank You

High Quality Source Required: Population
The claim that Karachi was the largest city on March. 2, 2016 on population is not substantiated by numbers but a pass-by claim in the source. Since many other sources even cited in this article state that Karachi was somewhere around 7th, where the population numbers are based on figures as close as 2016, this claim (including the one in the source) is therefore extremely questionable and requires direct numbers to be substantiated. Plus, the source I am afraid cannot be called reputable in the respect of population census.
Rethliopuks (talk) 10:09, 2 June 2016 (UTC)
Update: found a reliable and reputable source that is more recent (March. 7, 2016). Karachi according to it stands the 7th still as a city with an estimated population of 22,123,000.
Rethliopuks (talk) 10:17, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

Karachi's old names
There seems to be a concerted effort from certain people to impose some names of their liking on the city. My request is to delete such blanket statements which do not have proper reference. For example:
Karachi was reputedly founded as "Kolachi" by Baloch tribes from Balochistan and Makran, who established a small fishing community in the area.[23]
The given reference is an article published in 2002 in a newspaper. But a newspaper is not enough of a historical source to establish something.
The original name "Kolachi" survives in the name of a well-known Karachi locality named Mai Kolachi in Balochi.
There is no locality in the city named "Mai Kolachi". Yes, there is a bridge named such by the previous Sindh-based PPP government. An obviously political move to promote the name of their liking. But there is no village. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.236.53.155 (talk • contribs) 00:06, August 15, 2015 (UTC)
Use of "Megacity"
As per WIki article Megacity, "A megacity is usually defined as a metropolitan area with a total population in excess of ten million people." Megacity just means large city. It is not a settlement TYPE but just a descriptor of that settlement. The Type of settlement that Karachi is, is actually a metropolitan city and district (entire district Karachi is governed as part of the city). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Willard84 (talk • contribs) 13:22, December 1, 2016 (UTC)

Karachi as capital of Sindh
Pakistan is a federal republic and within its federating units, Sindh houses Karachi as its capital and largest city. It is the standard way to write it being the capital of Sindh, first. Check different cities in federal republics such as New York City, Mumbai, San Francisco, etc. Knowledgepedian (talk) 13:49, 24 September 2023 (UTC)
- @Seychellian I am reverting your version because it breaks the sentence flow. The previous lead mentioned it's former status as a federal capital along with its current status as a provincial capital all in one sentence, which looked way better. Also, see Lahore.
