Genres
[edit]There are many different genres mentioned throughout this article. Shall we begin a discussion about which ones should be listed in the infobox? ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:15, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- I have added soft rock from the Rolling Stone review with hidden note. —IB [ Poke ] 17:19, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- The prose also says, "for all its bravura exuberance and pop slickness it is old fashioned to its core" and "while still recording the customary pop tracks listeners have come to expect". Is it reasonable then to add "Pop" to the infobox? ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:56, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- Given the example above and its use within the prose, I would not object to a pop music genre being mentioned alongside soft rock within the infobox. livelikemusic talk! 04:07, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- OK, thanks for weighing in on this discussion. I've added pop to the infobox. ---Another Believer (Talk) 04:12, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi Another Believer, I have now removed the Pop genre as we have now Dance-pop as the actual genre for the pop category. —IB [ Poke ] 06:26, 26 October 2016 (UTC)
- I think "pop" is more appropriate since it is used by more sources than "dance-pop", but I won't revert. ---Another Believer (Talk) 15:50, 26 October 2016 (UTC)

Recording locations
[edit]I've never seen a quote box displaying recording locations in a Wikipedia article before. Is this necessary, or even helpful? ---Another Believer (Talk) 16:50, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- Update: The box has since been removed. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:03, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- I have removed it, really unnecessary and clouts the section completely. The recording locales are already included in the infobox. —IB [ Poke ] 17:06, 21 October 2016 (UTC)
- +1. I don't think it is necessary to display all of the recording locations. They appear in the infobox and are better mentioned in prose, not visual form. ---Another Believer (Talk) 17:08, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Metacritic question
[edit]Is it redundant to have the metacritic score in the Review scores box as well as in the critical reception header? Looking for clarification on this matter since I was told it's "gratuitous" but I feel it's better for at-a-glance purposes. --JennicaTalk 00:49, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
Critical Response vs Critical Reception
[edit]I feel like it should be "Critical reception".. It's all I've ever seen it referred to on wikipedia. Another user keeps changing it to "critical response". It should also be "Commercial performance" and not "commercial reception". It's consistent from what I've seen all over wiki --JennicaTalk 23:57, 24 October 2016 (UTC)
- Yes, critical reception per Wikipedia:WikiProject_Albums/Album_article_style_guide#Critical_reception. ---Another Believer (Talk) 00:00, 25 October 2016 (UTC)
- @IndianBio: - See? I'm not making unnecessary edits
Personnel
[edit]I just learned that it's against the guidelines to have psuedo-headlines.. and so every category under Personnel has to have a subheader which I think is gaudy. I've seen on other pages where they don't even list the categories (Production, design etc..). What do you guys think? Just keep it all together or separate? --Jennica✿ Talk 10:19, 27 October 2016 (UTC)
- No I think the subheadings in this case works just fine. There is nothing gaudy. Subsections will continue to be added in the chart, promotion sections also. —IB [ Poke ] 10:46, 27 October 2016 (UTC)

"Diamond Heart" lyrics error
[edit]In the Music and Lyrics section, a reference is cited that incorrectly quotes the lyrics to Diamond Heart. Perhaps a more accurate source should be used and the correct lyric used in this article..
The erroneous line is, "Hearkening to her earlier works, the singer utters the line "I may not be perfect, but I've got a diamond heart""
The actual lyric begins, "I'm not flawless" or "I might not be flawless". She uses the word "flawless", not "perfect".Xblkx (talk) 11:01, 23 November 2016 (UTC)

Joanne was included on NME's Albums Of The Year list, at #20 place. About the album NME said: "Following the conceptual excesses of 2013’s ‘Artpop’, Lady Gaga’s fourth album neither looked nor sounded much like a Lady Gaga album at all. Instead, for all its starry cast of A-list collaborators, ’Joanne’ felt more like the first Stefani Germanotta album: a more personal, stripped-back, soft-rock turn that revealed much about the woman behind the meat couture and Mother Monster persona. Gaga’s diva impulses were given free reign on tracks like ‘Perfect Illusion’ and ‘Come to Mama’, but it was ‘Joanne’’s quieter, more introspective moments that hit hardest and lingered longest."

Impact
[edit]What about to include an "Impact" section in the article? I did one on the Portuguese Wikipedia, with many journalists noting Gaga's music and image change with Joanne, as well the new artistic and personal approach she adopted for the album era and the return of the "vocalist era" "Million Reasons" brought — alongside many others songs. It's just a suggestion, but I think that would be useful. Music01 (talk) 14:44, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- Absolute garbage what's present in the Portuguese Wikipedia in my opinion. Not to belittle your addition and idea, but the mere thought of this album having any kind of impact is laughable. Billboard only wrote one article about the vocalist era and that too was for "Million Reasons". That does not make this album impactful in any way. Coupled with the moderate commercial success even in this decaying market, I oppose any such addition. Her image change and musical direction change is already noted in the article, however did she actually give rise to a bevy of albums impersonating the country rock roots she displayed? Unlike The Fame/Monster eras where her sound itself gave rise to the dance-pop era and crafted the pop star imagery back, this my friend, is a flop in that respect. —IB [ Poke ] 16:21, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- Ok. I will keep the content in the Portuguese Wikipedia because, there, I think it's interesting to talk about the reception of new image and approach of the Joanne, but I agree with your conclusion; I wanted an opinion before thinking about to add or not the content here. Thanks, IndianBio. Music01 (talk) 17:52, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
- I appreciate the contribution, but I don't think so. Is an circumlocution and we're already mentioned this sound and style change during the all article. There is not any impact about this album, specially in sales and critics that are low of her previous albums. Chrishonduras (Diskussion) 19:31, 5 May 2017 (UTC)
The album has had impact. There are at least 5 articles that prove that. Look at Kesh, Miley, Harry, now Justin and others. More will follow this trend Joanne was at the forefront of. Commericial mainstream singers ‘stripping down’. Time will tell. But an IMPACT section needs adding. Riordanpett (talk) 21:01, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

First: Forbes in which Hugh McIntyre is saying: "Lady Gaga was one of the first artists currently helping usher in this new era with her latest album Joanne, which saw her put down the disco stick and pick up an acoustic guitar", "Since then, a number of superstars have decided to stick with full bands and guitars, and some of the most famous have been able to make it work, at least for a little while.", "Miley Cyrus’ new single “Malibu” takes the listener to the beach with a Modest Mouse, indie rock-styled pop tune, while former One Direction member Harry Styles went one step further and dove headfirst into light glam rock with his first solo album and its lead single “Sign Of The Times.”, "The latest star to jump on the bandwagon and ditch all things electronic for guitars and an easier sound is Kesha, who is mounting an incredible return to the mainstream after several years away.". Link: https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcintyre/2017/08/16/lady-gaga-miley-kesha-top-40-pop-has-gone-acoustic-but-is-it-going-well/#324fbdf94e7f
Second: Billboard's article by Andrew Unterberger: "Miley Cyrus' 'Malibu' & New Album: Will It Be Her Version of Lady Gaga's Joanne?". Then goes on to say: "If some of that language sounded familiar upon first reading, it might be because it's not all that different from the rhetoric espoused by another left-of-center pop star preceding her own voyage back to the middle." (a.k.a. Gaga) and "It seems that Cyrus' new music is taking her down a similar path in the post-Trump age". Link: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/pop/7800066/miley-cyrus-malibu-lady-gaga-joanne-centric-pop-stars
Third: Billboard again. Article by Gary Trust: "With 'Million Reasons,' Is Lady Gaga Bringing Back 'The Vocalist Era'?". Quotes: ""Reasons" as part of a bigger musical picture, given the song's booming vocal, punctuated by Gaga's "I bow down to pray" high notes out of the verses." and "I think we are entering a new era of traditional ballads and big vocals.". Link: http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/7744316/with-million-reasons-is-lady-gaga-bringing-back-the-vocalist-era
Fourth: The Atlantic featuring article by Spencer Kornhaber: "Like Gaga with last year’s Joanne, Kesha trades thumping electro for analogue instruments and genres that, fairly or not, have an easier time being perceived as “authentic”: rock and roll, country, folk." and "Also like Gaga, she tries to execute this turn while tamping down, but not altogether ditching, her previous persona." Link: https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2017/08/kesha-rainbow-review-human-superhero/536355/
Fifth: Glamour with article by: Christopher Rosa: "Gaga toned down her look, her sound, everything.", "Her album that dropped a month later (Joanne) boasts this aesthetic too: It has exactly zero true-blue pop songs; she delivers raw vocals and soft acoustics throughout it. She wears a cowboy hat on the cover.". And then he listed Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez for toning down their looks. Keep in mind that Joanne was released before any of theirs work. Link: https://www.glamour.com/story/pop-stars-are-stripping-down-their-sounds-and-looks
Sixth: Odyssey by Melissa Engelman: "Did Miley Cyrus Copy Lady Gaga?" "Is she really now growing up, or has she strategically been the wild child to now reap the benefits? Either way, it is reminding me of another pop princess who is dear to my heart, Lady Gaga.", "Her last album "Joanne," while it tips its hat at the previous work she has done, is much more stripped down comparatively and has a country influence.", "What changed for Gaga, and how does this at all relate to Cyrus’ recent music?" and "However, the new song is very reminiscent of her Meet Miley Cyrus album, which leads me to believe that she was, in fact, taking a cue from the Mother Monster as a way to kick off her career apart from Hannah Montana." (Mother Monster = Lady Gaga). Link: https://www.theodysseyonline.com/did-miley-cyrus-copy-lady-gaga
These are 6 different examples of the impact Gaga's Joanne album has had in the last 10 months since it's release and I am sure there will be more as the time passes. I think Impact section is necessary addition.
P.S. Sales ≠ Impact. An album can have impact and influence on others even though it's not blockbuster. And Joanne is selling as much as any other pop album in this poor music industry climate. JoDash (talk) 02:15, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
- Wow thanks @JoDash: for this summary. Now the album's impact cannot exactly be ignored. Let me come up with something for the article. —IB [ Poke ] 15:38, 20 August 2017 (UTC)
- @IndianBio: Hey, can you give me an update on how this article is coming about? Thanks. JoDash (talk) 10:06, 24 August 2017 (UTC)
- Will take time. Please have patience. —IB [ Poke ] 10:08, 24 August 2017 (UTC)

Rolling Stone: "Cyrus had long been a fan of Labrinth's work, and beyond him and Howard, she admires Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Lady Gaga. The latter's most recent release, the country-infused Joanne, has served as her muse during the writing process album for her debut album in recent months." Brad Wete from Billboard named Lady Gaga's pink 'Joanne' hat "pop's most recognizable accessory of the year." Link: http://www.billboard.com/articles/events/year-in-music-2016/7616982/lady-gaga-joanne-hat-price JoDash (talk) 13:43, 21 September 2017 (UTC)
NEW: Vanity Fair's Josh Duboff writes: "In returning to his “roots,” the seemingly countryfied Timberlake recalls the feel of Gaga’s Joanne era (which, aesthetically, was most notable for the pink cowboy hat she wore on the album’s cover and in many of the promotional stops). Other pop stars—Miley Cyrus and Kesha among them—have recently pivoted from a more pop-focused sound to something rootsier." https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2018/01/justin-timberlake-man-of-the-woods-pivot-super-bowl JoDash (talk) 13:29, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
This needs adding to the page. The album has had a lot of impact, ushering in a new trend of a ‘stripped down’ sound. She was the first mainstream artist in recent years to do this. People misread it when I say that. They think I’m saying she was the first to ever do it. NO. I am saying she has kickstarted a recent trend, 2015 onwards. Riordanpett (talk) 20:55, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
I saw an article recently saying “is this justin timeberlake’s ‘JOANNE’ era?”
Someone find it and add it Riordanpett (talk) 20:58, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
Joanne is certified platinum in Brazil
[edit]X2franklop (talk) 20:28, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- Not done.... at least not yet. It's best to wait for certification databases to add such listings to their site or at least publicly announce when something is certified. Snuggums (talk / edits) 20:53, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
But that page is the official Facebook of Universal Music Brazil. The others pages of Joanne in different languages have the certification of Brazil.
X2franklop (talk) 23:38, 8 November 2017 (UTC)
- My answer remains the same, and we should take such claims from record companies with a grain of salt as labels often embellish sales/streaming figures of their artists for promotional purposes. Snuggums (talk / edits) 01:32, 9 November 2017 (UTC)
Year-end charts Spain

Grigio Girls
[edit]The article currently does not reference "Grigio Girls" outside of its appearance as a bonus track in the deluxe edition. During interviews, Gaga has talked about how she dedicated the song to her friend Sonja. Do you think that it is worth a mention in the "Music and lyrics" section? Here are two sources that could be used for a brief sentence or two on the track (Elle, Billboard), which includes information on the song's inspiration and some of the lyrics. Just thought it might be helpful. Aoba47 (talk) 18:19, 6 August 2018 (UTC)
- That's a good source and can definitely be incorporated. Thanks Aoba! —IB [ Poke ] 04:01, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
- I am just glad that I could help. Great work with the article! Aoba47 (talk) 17:31, 7 August 2018 (UTC)
Kylie Minogue
[edit]The lead says that Kylie Minogue was inspired by Joanne, but the body of the article does not include information to support this. The following sources can be added to support this claim, and to add information to the "Legacy" section (The Atlantic, E! News). Aoba47 (talk) 02:03, 31 August 2018 (UTC)
- Oops I had completely missed this @Aoba47:, sorry and just now saw your edit. Thanks for adding this :) —IB [ Poke ] 13:44, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- No worries. Just trying to help out. It seems like the country phrase will always be a part of a pop singer's career lol. Aoba47 (talk) 13:47, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Haha yes, I do hope Gaga will be out of it now though with her sixth studio album. —IB [ Poke ] 13:47, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Same. I enjoyed Joanne, but I would imagine that she is going to explore a different sound for her next album, particularly given the Enigma residency's visuals. We will just have to wait and see lol. Aoba47 (talk) 13:50, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- She is working with Mark Ronson and Sophie apparently. So I'm expecting something very much with a vaporwave influence and country-disco sound. —IB [ Poke ] 13:59, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Sounds interesting. I am down for vaporwave stuff, and I have enjoyed Ronson's music lately. I actually think that his recent collaboration with Miley Cyrus was pretty good. Aoba47 (talk) 14:08, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Really love "Nothing Breaks Like a Heart" and I can totally visualize Gaga on it. —IB [ Poke ] 14:17, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
- Will remind you guys that this page is for discussing improvements to the Joanne article, and not a forum for general discussion about the topic. I don't mind it from experienced editors who obviously know this, but imo it sets bad precedent for IPs and newer editors. x--NØ 19:44, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
Images
[edit]@Sricsi and IndianBio: Please, both, stop going back and forth re: images. I am going to restore the longstanding version, but Sricsi, can you please share here which images you'd like to change and why, so editors can consider options and discuss? Thanks. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:05, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- WP:BRD hugely applies here and the onus was on Sricsi to start a discussion and not resort to edit warring. And @Another Believer: not sure if you remember or not but it was me and you who had chosen the long-standing images after some back-and-forth between ourselves (including one where we decided to remove a picture of "Diamond Heart" performance) —IB [ Poke ] 22:08, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes, but perhaps there are more (or even better) images to consider now, so I'd like to give User:Sricsi a chance to suggest specific improvements/changes. ---Another Believer (Talk) 22:09, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- I have seen Sricsi's images which he/she added and I have very good reason for removing them. Firstly, this was used to demonstrate the characteristic pink hat which is trademark of the whole era-which Sricsi replaced with a generic image and caption, which was of no contextual significance. The second image currently used from the Coachella performance follows suit, since "John Wayne" was the only other image available from it. —IB [ Poke ] 22:12, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- If you really want a photo with the pink hat, can't we look for a different one? I still don't know why you prefer to use cropped out, horrendous quality pictures when there are certainly better options. Could we perhaps add a photo of "Million Reasons" that has a clear view of her hat? --Sricsi (talk) 22:18, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- The paragraph of the section where the image is used does not contain "Million Reasons", it has the A-side songs like "Diamond Heart", "A-Yo" etc. Hence the image was chosen so that through one visual artifice both the characteristic of the era as well a performance on Joanne World Tour could be illustrated. Also the images of "Million Reasons" where one can see the pink hat is actually horrendous (like this one) as one can't even see Gaga's face. File:Lady Gaga A-Yo Tacoma.jpg is absolutely high resolution so I do not see your reasoning about them being low-quality. —IB [ Poke ] 22:23, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- If you crop her out of the original photo, the quality is semmingly horrible. And the picture of "Million Reasons" currently in the article is really subpar. Compare it with this one: image . --Sricsi (talk) 22:27, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- Feel free to replace the Million Reasons pic please. I could not find a better quality at that time. —IB [ Poke ] 22:30, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- I would either replace it with the photo I just shared, or just remove it entirely, as I don't think it adds anything of importance to the article. --Sricsi (talk) 22:34, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- And you agree on the other image placements right? Then I would go ahead and change the Million Reasons image with the one you linked above. —IB [ Poke ] 22:39, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- I can see your reasoning for using a photo of her with the pink hat, but the quality of that photo is just baffling. I guess I will try to look for a better quality image, or contact someone who may be able to upload one. --Sricsi (talk) 22:43, 10 January 2019 (UTC)
- You should have replaced with the image you suggested. Sigh! —IB [ Poke ] 09:39, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
- I think I was able to find a solution by acquiring a new clear image of Gaga's "Million Reasons" performance (File:Lady Gaga Million Reasons Fenway Park.png). As discussed previously, a picture of Gaga wearing the characteristic hat from the album cover should be included in the article, as it is a well-known representation of the whole era. The former picture (File:Lady Gaga A-Yo Tacoma (cropped).jpg) did portray her wearing a hat, but the real Joanne hat was worn by Gaga during "Million Reasons". The one worn during "A-Yo" was just a random, glittery cowboy hat, which is not even the same shade of pink as it is on the album cover. Moreover, the title track, "Joanne" is the central piece thematically of the whole album, and it fits perfectly into the paragraphs regarding the lyrics. --Sricsi (talk) 14:40, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Million Reasons certification update
[edit]The singles paragraph of Joanne states that Million Reasons was certified Platinum. It should be edited in order to reflect that it was certified triple Platinum recently. --88.66.227.50 (talk) 11:48, 5 April 2020 (UTC)
Orphaned references in Joanne (album)
[edit]I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Joanne (album)'s orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Musical Genre (soft-rock / country)
[edit]Joanne stands out for being Gaga's first album without electronic elements, literally every source of the article mentions that Joanne is a soft rock album with country elements, in the Music and Lyrics section no song is described as "dance-pop" every site and each critic mentions their country acoustic influences, I don't understand why it says "dance-pop" in the description of the song, it doesn't make sense, there are around 150 references that say otherwise. Where's the "dance-pop"?
Diamond Heart / rock-EDM
A-YO / country pop
Joanne / country
John Wayne / pop rock
Dancin' in Circles / pop, reggae and ska
Perfect Illusion /disco-rock
Million Reasons / country
Sinner's Prayer / country, R&B
Come to Mama / folk
