Film

I'll bring this up again. The whole awards section of his filmography is a lie. There is absolutely no source for any of this. His IMDB awards page does not cite any of those nominations. How such a fabrication can go unnoticed on Wikipedia is beyond me. As for his crazy fans, please consider whether making it up that he was nominated for any of these awards means anything. 86.61.109.24 (talk) 12:01, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

You were right, some awards were made up. I removed them and fixed the filmography. The current awards are sourced by a book, Jared Leto by Hilmar Bender. Thanks for notification.--Earthh (talk) 19:49, 28 September 2012 (UTC)

Biographical edits

In keeping with our policy on biographical articles, I've edited some of the personal and more, um, salacious details that were very poorly sourced:

Early life and education

Most of this section was referenced three sources:

  • "Jared Leto: I enjoy the process of work". Education and Career (175): 11. March 2011" - If there is a readily available source for this then let's have it, but we have a large swath of very specific personal details being sourced to something no one has really seen. Surely there's a backing source for all this information? If we find it, fine.
  • Biography from TV Guide - Unreliable source as there is no author and no apparent tertiary sources; contains little personal details anyway.
  • Biography from tribute.ca - Same problem: Non-reliable source. Nowhere in there does it say what the sources are for the personal details. Is it an interview? Where is the editorial oversight? Again, lots of personal details with no secondary backing sources. In contrast, interviews from Movieline and The Telegraph (which I used) are much more reliable.
  • Kerrang! - Offline but not contesting that this is a reliable source.

So I took what I had from the NYT and the Telegraph and refactored the whole section, leaving alone the Kerrang interview.

2000–06: Worldwide recognition

  • "To prepare for his role in the film, Leto decided to live on the streets of New York City and refrain from having sex with his then fiancé, Cameron Diaz, for two months prior to shooting." Sourced to WENN, no secondary online backing source found. At all. Not even going there.
  • "After the shooting of the film, Leto moved to Portugal, shaved his head and lived in a monastery for several months to gain weight." Two sources. The first one didn't even mention that, and the second was WENN/Albawaba. I was unable to find a backing source for this, although this briefly mentions the on- and off-set problems caused by the effort put into the role by Leto. No other site mentions any monasteries or head shaving. The additional statement sourced to that was replaced with essentially the same thing off the Telegraph interview.

Relationships

  • "Leto began dating Cameron Diaz in 1999 and the couple became engaged in 2000.[150] In 2003, they ended their four-year relationship." The engagement part was sourced to a gossip site, and the second is not available online. I see a lot of gossip and Yahoo Questions about the alleged engagement, but not a single verifiable statement one from either person that would back that. So let's just leave it at "Leto dated actress Cameron Diaz between 1999 and 2003". In fact, the Telegraph interview above and this specifically mention that he won't talk about that at all.

Jared's guitars

Now Jared Leto uses a Martin Standard Series, models HD-28 or HD-28V (Acoustic) Please add this to the section of 'Instruments' You can see this in this links ---> http://www.martinguitar.com/series/item/190-hd-28.html http://www.martinguitar.com/series/item/189-hd-28v.html http://radiocomercial.iol.pt/upload/OUTROS/892970_10151978206799617_980229728_o.jpg http://www.thirtysecondstomars.com/tour/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/8077549_wenn20450893-550x412.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3SerljpqOqE/Ul7S1m8E_DI/AAAAAAAAApI/A35NvzM-RFU/s1600/P1000822.JPG JeanJaramillo (talk) 04:31, 2 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your contributions JeanJaramillo! Just to inform you, I have declined your edit in good faith, since the "Instruments" used section defines what type of instruments are used by the person, not what kind of instruments are used. In a broader sense, it doesn't seem to fit in over there. However you may request addition of other verifiable facts with a reference, and I will add them in the article. EthicallyYours! 16:30, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

Enough Already!

This, people, is a criticism of the article, not of Mr Leto - don't want anyone going off the rails.

One supposes that Mr Leto's Oscar win means another Niagara of breathless fanformation, sorry John and Hullaballoo Wolfowitz. WHY do we get an entire book on him? Sadly Wikipedia isn't on the road to being an encyclopedia any longer. It is a sad agglomeration of fan factoids and advertisements.74.15.42.191 (talk) 19:30, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

Question concerning Movie listings=

I have checked Jared Leto's movie lists on various sites and I do not see Phone Booth which starred Colin Farrell. I may be mistaken but I could swear that Jared Leto was one of the Colin's character's clients - Colin played a promoter and Jared appeared as a musician. Anyone have anything to back this up or did I just see someone who looked like him?? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 167.181.12.201 (talk) 23:53, 20 January 2007 (UTC).

According to IMDB's listing for Phone Booth in the Trivia section, Leto's scene was deleted from the film, but was then returned for television airings. - TJLink 08:11, 5 February 2007 (UTC) Jared Leto is now definately with a woman named Stephani from Philadelphia as they have been seen together in Belgium while filming Mr. Nobody and have been spotted in People Magazine and US Weekly as well as him admitting to their relationship on avid Letterman on July 7, 2007 - a day before her birthday. This proves he is NOT gay and happily with a blonde beauty. He seemd obsessed with her.

No, it just proves that he has an apparently amicable relationship with a particular woman. It doesn't definitively prove whether he is straight, gay, bisexual, or just confused. One well-known counterexample was George Michael...in his heyday, the same argument was made, how anyone with a "hot girlfriend" couldn't possibly be gay...but guess what? :) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.79.230.152 (talk) 13:30, 4 March 2014 (UTC)

In the movie section it lists "last of the high kings" and "summer fling" these are both the same movie, "summer fling" being the USA release title. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.134.52.129 (talk) 02:15, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

I would debate that "Their debut album, 30 Seconds to Mars (2002), was released to critical acclaim but only to limited success.[4]"

The reviews on that album from reputable critics are *overwhelmingly* negative. Can we get this removed?

108.48.191.155 (talk) 14:21, 6 March 2014 (UTC)

You're wrong, sources say differently.--Earthh (talk) 14:35, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
Not done Looking at the article 30 Seconds to Mars (album) although AllMusic only gave it 2 stars, 5 other reviews gave it 4/5 - that's certainly not "overwhelmingly negative". - 15:18, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
It's not "critical acclaim" either; Metacritic currently has it at a "Mixed or average reviews" statement for the album. Wikipedia says "generally positive reviews" in my opinion the album isn't critically acclaimed and it shouldn't say that. ShawntheGod (talk) 18:41, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
I recently made an edit to the article leaving the review part out, but mentioning their debut album was released in 2002. Seems more logical and suitable considering the fact I see such mixed reviews overall. ShawntheGod (talk) 18:57, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
I changed it with positive reviews, that's how the source describes the album's critical reception upon its release.--Earthh (talk) 19:25, 8 March 2014 (UTC)
Seems fine, no problem here. ShawntheGod (talk) 20:03, 8 March 2014 (UTC)

Name

Our law firm represents Jared Leto. Please be advised that the Wikipedia artical about Jared Leto contains erroneous and unverified information which we request be immediately corrected. Jared Leto was not born Jared Bryant. This needs to be deleted from his page and form all articles regarding Jared Leto. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legal Representative (talkcontribs) 19:54, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

The Wikipedia Page about Jared Leto contains erroenous information which should be corrected. He was not born Jared Bryant. His name has always been Jared Leto. 19:56, 17 December 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Legal Representative (talkcontribs)

I have removed it [1] with edit summary: remove "Jared Bryant" claim , the source only says his father is Tony Bryant, my Google hits are Wikipedia mirrors. We shouldn't assume he got his fathers last name if no source says it. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:31, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
I agree. I raised the same concerns at User talk:Earthh#Jared Leto 2, where a couple of users have been discussing it. It is a good source for the name of his dad, but using it as a source for Leto's birth name is original synthesis at best. Nymf (talk) 21:58, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

The claim that Tony Bryant is Jared Leto's natural father is erroneous. It is based on an Ancestry.com entry for a marriage of a Constance Metrejon in 1969 to a Tony L Bryant. This is the year before Shannon Leto was born. However, the marriage took place in Texas, not Louisiana, where Constance Leto's family appear to be based. Someone has simply put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5. It is not the correct Constance Metrejon.

I have removed the second reference to Tony Bryant in the Early Life section, although someone reverted the edit. I have removed it again.Jarrit29 (talk) 19:45, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

What makes you say the statement that Tony Bryant is Jared's biological father is incorrect? The Polish article about Jared states that Tony Bryant and Constance Metrejon separated a few months after their second son's (Jared's) birth. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 08:56, 27 December 2013 (UTC)
Haven't you read what is at the start of this post? His legal representatvie says that his name was never Jared Bryant. Just because someone has found a Constance Metrejon on Ancestry.com does not make it the correct Constance Metrejon. Apart from which, the marriage took place in Texas, not Louisiana, which is where the Leto/Metrejon family orginate from. In addition, Constance Metrejon's father is variously named as Edmund or Willie, which makes you think there might just be more than one Constance Metrejon. Also, I have also seen Jared Leto's natural father named as something like Antony Duvoir, and there are also claims that Robert Greenwood, who is frequently photographed with the Leto brothers, is their half-brother, and that this can be proven by Ancestry.com entries. So, take your pick what his birthname, if not Leto, is. Louisiana is a 'closed' state and birth records are not available to the general public for 100 years after the envent, so unless Jared Leto himself chooses to reveal what his birth name is, no one is going to know for certain. The legal representative seems to be saying that it actually is Leto.Jarrit29 (talk) 13:37, 27 December 2013 (UTC)Jarrit29
There's no source which proves that Tony Bryant is Jared's father. However, Constance Metrejon is well-sourced as Jared's mother.--Earthh (talk) 12:49, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

I do not believe for one minute that a law firm for Jared Leto is monitoring this page. If so,they cannot spell the word from. They spelled it form,(This needs to be deleted from his page and form all articles regarding Jared Leto.). I'm sure a legit legal firm would at least type in the Firm's name. 98.240.76.78 (talk) 02:24, 3 March 2014 (UTC)

No, his law firm probably doesn't but he does and so does his PR manager. I've seen him repost pictures from fan-sites and I am pretty sure he and his PR people regularly Google his name, hence the huge change in tack from the Golden Globes speech to the Oscars speech. If you do Google his name, the Wikipedia entry appears as a summary, so the Bryant name appeared while it was in this article. Because of this, it has now spread throughout the web. Jarrit29 (talk) 18:35, 22 March 2014 (UTC) Jarrit29
The Daily Mail wrote that Anthony Bryant is Jared's father. All Hallow's Wraith (talk) 05:15, 5 March 2014 (UTC)
This article is completely untrustworthy. It claims Jared and Shannon have a half-sister from their mother's second marriage. The source for this is a piece of fanfiction. Occupations

Some occupations (musician, producer and businessman) has been removed twice by User:Bbb23, who called them "unjustified and or redundant". However, they appear to be notable since: 1) Leto plays guitars and several other instruments for Thirty Seconds to Mars and thus he is a musician and just "singer-songwriter" does not mean "musician"; 2) He served as record producer for every album by Thirty Seconds to Mars. He has also produced every film he directed and co-produced some films which he starred; 3) He runs three businesses which make him a businessman. I've restored these occupations and invited the user to use the talk page.--Earthh (talk) 20:20, 6 April 2014 (UTC)

Producers are a dime a dozen. Generally, the producer occupation should be used when that's the main occupation that makes the subject notable. Not so with Leto. Singer is enough to accommodate musician. And lots of celebrities start their own businesses. That isn't what makes them notable, either. Indeed, often the only reason they succeed in their business is because of their celebrity status as an actor or director or whatever. Having the current incredibly long list of occupations dilutes his main occupations. It's silly.--Bbb23 (talk) 20:42, 6 April 2014 (UTC)
I think we should leave them as I said before. Looking at other articles such as David Bowie or Lady Gaga, they both have these occupations which could be considered "secondary" jobs, but remain notable.--Earthh (talk) 13:17, 7 April 2014 (UTC)

Early Life

Can someone please explain to me why the reference to Jared Leto's father's suicide has been removed? The source for this is an interview given by Leto to The London Evening Standard. Leto reposted the article to his own website here http://jaredleto.com/thisiswhoireallyam/2014/03/20/interview-london-evening-standard/. Why is this not a reliable source for the information? Someone keeps insisting that a spurious Polish 'biography' that has no authorised authority and only contains information gleaned from the internet and does not contain any direct interviews with the Letos is a reliable biographical authority. Can someone please explain why?Jarrit29 (talk) 19:54, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

It was my mistake, I've restored that info and source. Interia.pl appears to be a reliable source and the cited article contains direct interviews with the Letos.--Earthh (talk) 12:39, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you. I entirely disagree that the Polish article is trustworthy and is anything but a rehash of material gleaned from the internet. For example, the 'glass eye' quote comes originally from an E! interview with Leto here http://www.reocities.com/TelevisionCity/6856/einter.htm. And, as I have tried repeatedly to point out, this article appears to be the source (or at least one of them) for the incorrect Tony Bryant information which, thanks to being posted on this Wikipedia article, has now proliferated throughout the internet, and has been repeated on the Mail Online and IMDB. There is no proof that the Constance Metrejohn who married a Tony Bryant in Texas in 1969, as posted on Ancestry.com, is Jared Leto's mother, but someone has made the assumption that it is his mother and that Tony Bryant must therefore be his natural father.
Can I ask that someone re-sources the information in this part of the article (which I think is basically correct) with reliable, direct sources rather than a second-hand one such as this Polish article? I would do it myself but I suspect that it would simply be a waste of time as it would just get deleted.Jarrit29 (talk) 18:46, 10 April 2014 (UTC)
You can do whatever you want if that improves the quality of the page.--Earthh (talk) 15:03, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

Grooming of girls

I think this is a reasonable entry under "controversies". Even fellow director James Gunn has commented on it. 24.36.216.215 (talk) 10:20, 3 April 2022 (UTC)

You'd need extremely robust evidence from multiple good reliable sources. It doesn't look like that exists. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Unbh (talkcontribs) 22:13, 3 April 2022 (UTC)
As of my writing this, some of the most recent sources I've been able to find for allegations/accusations of misconduct against Leto are as follows:
Per WP:NEWSWEEK, post-2013 articles published by Newsweek focus on "clickbait headlines over quality journalism [...] Newsweek's quality has not returned to its status prior to the 2013 purchase [by IBT Media]. Many editors have noted that there are several exceptions to this standard, so consensus is to evaluate Newsweek content on a case-by-case basis." In this case, the Newsweek article in question draws from Twitter posts and a 2005 article published by the New York Post; both Twitter and the New York Post are considered generally unreliable (see WP:RSPTWITTER and WP:NYPOST for more information).
This article makes brief mention of Leto having "a trail of allegations relating to him sexually pursuing underage fans that go back over a decade." The aforementioned statement links to the below article by The Daily Beast. Due to the brevity of the info in the Vice article (that aforementioned sentence is the only one that discusses said allegations; the rest of the article is mainly about the film Morbius), I imagine it's not likely to be considered significant coverage.
Per WP:DAILYBEAST, "Most editors consider The Daily Beast a biased or opinionated source. Some editors advise particular caution when using this source for controversial statements of fact related to living persons." Due to the serious and likely controversial nature of the content proposed, it's unlikely that this source will hold much water.
So, as Unbh said, it doesn't seem like coverage from multiple, independent, reliable sources exists at this time. It's important to take victims of sexual misconduct seriously; as far as Wikipedia policy goes, however, it looks like there isn't enough coverage by reliable news sources to satisfy the standards for biographies of living persons. —Matthew - (talk) 16:20, 5 April 2022 (UTC)
I don't understand how you think that when Vice, The Daily Beast and Newsweek are multiple independent reliable sources? 78.150.129.45 (talk) 23:52, 12 May 2022 (UTC)
Those are multiple, and they are independent but not remotely reliable. 85.5.140.227 (talk) 07:07, 20 May 2022 (UTC)
How? I'd like to know why I'm wrong because I've seen other articles on Wikipedia with Newsweek sources? Although now that I think about it, Vice isn't reliable - although I don't know enough about The Daily Beast to comment. It just seemed reliable to me at the time from my experience with it 92.10.13.209 (talk) 23:01, 22 May 2022 (UTC)
Because people edit Wikipedia in a very selective way. People like Unbh and Matthew use silly excuses to not include those controversies on Wiki, while at the same time they (most likely) use non-reliable sources all the time. 2003:FB:4F0B:5600:EDC3:F4AE:7C8F:9565 (talk) 20:35, 29 June 2022 (UTC)
For the record, I don't like Jared Leto either as an actor or as a person, and frankly, I would not be the least bit surprised if he were found to be a predator. I'm just letting you know about (1) the sources I was able to find related to the allegations in question, and (2) the general consensus on Wikipedia regarding the reliability of those sources, especially as it relates to the policies for biographies of living persons. I think that if content related to the allegations were to be added to the article at this time, it wouldn't be long before some other editor(s) or even an administrator removed it for the reasons I outlined above. —Matthew - (talk) 00:44, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
ridiculous reasoning 2003:F5:F70E:B397:F5E7:7250:F7CC:9650 (talk) 01:29, 7 March 2023 (UTC)
After reading enough articles on that subject, it should be at least mentioned on his wiki page, that he was accused of "misbehavior" towards (younger) women (since at least 10 years). Dylan Sprouse, James Gunn and so on talked about it. A different issue: his "behavior" on the set of suicide squad (towards his co-actors) is also widely documented. Your argument therefor is relatively weak and if you do your research properly then I don't see why it should not be mentioned. IMHO, Jared is most likely to be the next hot candidate, that the #metoo movement will take down. He definitely got some R. Kelly vibes. 2003:FB:4F0B:5600:EDC3:F4AE:7C8F:9565 (talk) 20:31, 29 June 2022 (UTC)

There have been many allegations against Jared online and in real life, and I believe one was even brought to the police in 2002, regardless of the validity they should be added in a section. vegan

Section Politics says "Leto lives a vegan lifestyle and supports animal rights.[106]" citing a 2010 reference. However in this more recent interview he states that he is no longer a vegan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vfu2wczrsFE

Lord of War

There needs to be more in this article about his acting career and especially his role in Lord of War which would easily be his most prominent movie role yet.

Career

In section film it is stated Leto initially went to Hollywood to pursue a music career but it can not be actually verified because he has never stated such a thing before. So there is no reason to write such a thing as he was only focused on developing an acting career (what can be actually confirmed by the facts and then-interviews) and officially became involved in music when formed a band years later. It is completely unacceptable to include this in the article as long as it looks like a fiction story.

Affliction of gout

He gained weight and got gout at one point.[1][2]

Father

It seems a little weird the extent to which the article sort of dances around his father; the Polish source (site with, apparently, excerpts from a published biography) cited for his mother gives the father also- Tony Bryant- so surely ought to be included here as is standard format? He evidently played virtually no part in his son's upbringing, but it seems oddly worded and evasive as-is. If the Polish site is good enough for the mother, it ought to suffice for the father also, surely?
