Death Date
There are death rumors going on about Jackie right now and there is a death date on the article! I've seen a source but you can't call it a reliable one... 98.223.65.209 (talk) 10:55, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

As I said, I saw something that was NOT a reliable source. Thanks for fixing it. People better keep an eye on this article today... apparently he's the subject of an early April Fools hoax. So far I've seen him reported to have died in a stunt and another report that he died of a heart attack. Ho hum... 98.223.65.209 (talk) 11:05, 29 March 2011 (UTC)

Training
Isnt it true that he is a stunt man trained in the Beijing opera and has no true or formal martial arts trainjing, aside from what he got on set? 168.156.166.222 (talk) 19:54, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
- I believe Chan has had a variety of "formal" training, though I don't think he has been done competetive martial arts training. For exalhkhjkhkhmple, didn't he and other HK actors train in Hapkido in South Korea? Once again, before editing the article with such claims (either way), you'll need to include valid external references. Gram123 (talk) 15:54, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Is Hong Kong a city a city in China or not?
I think it is even though it's an autonomous city in China. If so, why is Jackie Chan called a Hong Kong actor and not a Chinese actor? He is clearly Chinese as he and other Chinese citizens in Hong Kong are very proud of their Chinese heritage/culture (e.g. kung fu movies). Do you call a Japanese actor/actress based on what city he or she is from? The answer is no. Who do some Chinese from Hong Kong like to be called Hongkongese and not Chinese, but yet they are so proud of their Chinese heritage/culture. It seems very contradicting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.165.229.45 (talk) 20:52, 30 March 2011 (UTC)

Jackie Chan's daughter
"The Hong Kong media alleged that he was the father, but as of yet, there has been no verification by either party involved." It is inaccurate, if not incorrect, to call it an allegation, as both parties (Elaine Ng and Jackie Chan) admitted their relationship publicly on TV and newspaper when Elaine was pregnant. In fact, Jackie recognized the girl as her daughter after her birth (see reference [1](in Chinese)). I think this is enough "verification" to claim Elaine's daughter was Jackie's, even although there has not been any DNA test disclosed. What else "verification" is needed then?--Beliqer33 (talk) 04:03, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
- If other Wikipedians think a DNA test is a must to prove paternity, we should at least mention the fact that both Elaine and Jackie recoginize Jackie as the girl's father. --Beliqer33 (talk) 04:36, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

How tall is he?
Dramawiki gieves his height as 174cm. In one of his Supercop films (the one with Michelle Yeoh) his character's personal data was that he was 5 foot 10 inches tall. However, it looks like in reality Jackie is closer to 154cm in height or about 5 foot 1 rather than 174 cm. In his films with western sparring partners he chooses short guys such as Bill "Superfoot" Wallace and Benny "the Jet" Urquidez. Asian audiences think a White guy must be very tall, thus giving Jackie Chan the appearence of being almost as tall as a white guy. His kicking actions in his films are not very effective due to his rather short legs, and he chooses Korean martial artists (or White martial artists) who can really kick high (which Jackie can't seem to perfect) as his oppenents to create more interesting martial art moves. Indeed if he were five foot 10, or even 174cm, it would be rather difficult for him to go through holes and gaps in his comic moves in the movies. Another way of referencing his height is that we all know Bruce Lee was 5 foot 7 and a half or about 171cm, and Sammo Hung starred with Bruce at the opening scene of Enter the Dragon. Sammo did not look taller than Bruce, but in Jackie's films, Sammo was made to look huge (six foot or more), with Jackie often a head shorter than Sammo. This points to Jackie being a rather small guy. Also the way he wears his trousers in public suggest that they are there to hide platform shoes. Often in his appearance on HK TV shows the height of his shoulder is lower than those of the Chinese women on the show. All this points to Jackie being about 5 foot tall. In fact Jackie would not qualify entry to the real Hong Kong Police force because of its height requirements. Is Jackie ashamed of being short and will not admit to it to fans? 86.174.55.22 (talk) 04:37, 2 December 2011 (UTC)
- Jackie Chan's height is about that of Pat Morita (whose role he took over in the Karate Kid franchise) or Danny Devito. There are lots of successful short male Hollywood actors who play strong, tall and tough characters. Paul Newman, Mel Gibson, Michael Keaton are examples. If these male actors have to act along side tall leading ladies, such as Nicole Kidman, then all they had to do was to stand on a box, and they were filmed above the waist. It is easier for Jackie, as most HK Chinese actresses are quite short any way. Jackie's shortness was also a reason why his courtship of Teresa Tang was unsuccessful. 109.150.205.74 (talk) 14:30, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

personal life
Jackie Chan has a son named David Haun Um David Haun Um is not just his child but he is also his karate teacher. In the first para it states: "He is one of the few actors that did all of his stunts in all of his films."
In the "Stunts" section it states: "Jackie Chan has performed most of his own stunts throughout his film career,"
Except for a silly definition of "most", these two claims are inconsistent in meaning (and tense). Can someone who knows correct please.

I suggest to append the "Political views and controversy" section with Chan's recent remark on tsunamis. I propose the following wording:
"In October 2013, Chan stated in an interview that he likes "to see some countries have a disaster coming, or either big tsunami, or either big earthquake". He clarified this by saying that he's "so happy" to see "everybody fly in to help the country" "[a]fter the big disaster".[2][3] These remarks sparked an outrage among Japanese netizens.[4]" 46.109.107.9 (talk) 18:08, 5 November 2013 (UTC)

Controversies Section
It's not our place to synthesize that Chan is, without doubt, conservative and nationalistic. Instead we can demonstrate how reliable sources have reported his nationalistic and conservative political statements contextualized as best we can by the circumstances in which he was reported to have said them. In all likelihood the result will be that readers will interpret Chan to be nationalistic and conservative - but that difference matters. Simonm223 (talk) 16:19, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
New editor attempting to help
Hello All - I'm going to try to help improve citations and grammar in this article. I know a lot of the content may be out of date or needs to be removed, but for now I'm treating all the material equally and neutrally until I get better bearings. So if I correct a citation or wording and someone else decides it needs to be deleted, you won't hurt my feelings. And feel free to correct my corrections too =) CammieD (talk) 14:15, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
Sure as I said I wouldn't touch content, I found something that probably needs to go. The Early Life section covers his childhood, but then in the Personal Life section there is some trivia about him having briefly lived in Thailand and training with a broken legged boxer. If those belong in the article at all, they should get moved up to Early Life. But they are vague and really trivial. I'm going to delete them. If I find the boxer training is more meaningful, I will add it back in somewhere more appropriate CammieD (talk) 14:44, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
Awards
The copious list of awards is missing citations throughout. It looks like the sources for these are numerous fan pages that all have the same general list. For comparison I looked at Arnold Schwarzenegger's article as someone likely to have awards in multiple careers and countries. That page has the awards listed on a separate page, which is handy and tidy. Might be a good idea to do the same for Jackie Chan? Jackie Chan's Personal Life - Buddhism
In the section - Personal Life the article states that Jackie Chan is a Buddhist - giving this site as 'proof' http://www.adherents.com/largecom/fam_buddhist.html Unfortunately this site does not back up any of its claims with any kind of proof and there is no proof or assertion or statement from Jackie Chan that he is a Buddhist. He has never made any claim to any particular faith. He has said things like "If there is a god ..." and various other statements that indicate some personal beliefs about various traditions but favouring no particular religion.
JPS101 (talk) 16:26, 2 May 2014 (UTC) JPS101 1 May 2014O
The above is a fact. I cannot find one quote from Jackie Chan stating he is a Buddhist or part of any religion. One of his only quotes about religion, "If there really is a god, then he really looks after me." - http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/authors/j/jackie_chan_4.html Buddhism does not believe in God, but if one is Buddhist you would think they would mention it once in their lifetime in order to be described a Buddhist?Easeltine (talk) 15:28, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
- Adherents.com also contradicts itself. In the "Some Buddhist Comic Book Characters" section of the linked page, Shi (comics) is listed, though their page on Shi lists her only as Roman Catholic, stating that her father was Buddhist. As it is primarily the work of the webmaster (who is not a religious scholar), the site should be treated as a blog not by a recognized authority in the field. Datuk Jackie Chan, SBS, MBE[1], PhD (born Chan Kong-sang, 陳港生; 7 April 1954)[2] is a Hong Kong actor, martial artist, film director, producer, stuntman, and singer.
Please add screenwriter and action choreographer to the list.
Please correct Datuk. This title is not used outside of Malaysia.
In his movies, he is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts, which he typically performs himself.
It is bad English and confusing to not mention Jackie Chan's name again in this sentence.
Correct version:
In his movies, Jackie Chan is known for his acrobatic fighting style, comic timing, use of improvised weapons, and innovative stunts, which he typically performs himself.
Chan has been training in Kung fu and Wing Chun.
'has been' is bad English. The correct form should be "Jackie Chan has trained in Kung Fu and Wing Chun.
He actually has a black belt in Hapkido, and has trained in many other martial art styles. I would suggest just saying that "Jackie Chan has trained in many different styles of martial arts." and leave the details for further down in the page.
As a cultural icon, Chan has been referenced in various pop songs, cartoons, and video games.
again 'has been' is incorrect. The songs etc are still in existence therefore it should be 'is'. An operatically trained vocalist, Chan is also a Cantopop and Mandopop star, having released a number of albums and sung many of the theme songs for the films in which he has starred.
The statement 'operatically trained' is misleading. He is trained in CHINESE opera. I think it should be qualified as such. As it stands this statement leads people to assume he is trained in Western opera and results in nonsense 'Did you know' posts on the net which perpetuate the inaccuracy. Not to mention that Chinese Opera is always referred as such while western opera is just 'opera'.
In addition the statements that Jackie Chan is 'cantopop and mandopop' star is also inaccurate. Although Jackie Chan has sung a lot, music has never been his primary career and he has always been first and foremost an actor and cannot and should not be identified as a music pop star (in any language). Although Jackie Chan was awarded the title of Datuk by the Malaysian government in 2015 the title is not used outside of Malaysia ie Jackie Chan can only be called 'Datuk' when he is in Malaysia, and by Malaysians. It is therefore incorrect to give him the title as part of his name.
Refer to your own information about the title of Datuk:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Datuk
"Foreigners may receive the award in a supernumerary and honorary capacity and use the title locally."
His correct name with titles is Dr Jackie Chan Kong-sang SBS MBE because he has been awarded not 1 but 3 honorary doctorates.

Lee was the son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-chuen. He is widely considered by commentators, critics, media, and other martial artists to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time,[6] and a pop culture icon of the 20th century.[7][8] He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.[9]
Lee was born in Chinatown, San Francisco, on November 27, 1940, to parents from Hong Kong, and was raised in Kowloon, Hong Kong, with his family, until his late teens. He was introduced to the film industry by his father, and appeared in several films as a child actor. Lee moved to the United States at the age of 18 to receive his higher education at the University of Washington, in Seattle,[10] and it was during this time that he began teaching martial arts. His Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, sparking a surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s. The direction and tone of his films changed and influenced martial arts and martial arts films in the US, Hong Kong, and the rest of the world.[11]

"...an illegitimate daughter by the name of Etta Ng Chok Lam was born on 18 January 1999. It turned into a scandal within the media. Although he reportedly gave Elaine 70,000 HK dollars each month for her living expenses and 600,000 HK dollars when she moved to Shanghai, the transactions were later claimed to be nonexistent by her lawyer.[95][96][97][98] Despite regretting the results of the affair, Chan said he had "only committed a fault that many men in the world commit".[99][100][101] During the incident, Elaine stated she would take care of her daughter without Chan.[102]"

Chan Sr was hiding out at the US Embassy in Canberra because he was a Chinese nationalist agent who originally fled China to Hong Kong to avoid being captured by rival Communists.
"My father was spy hiding in Hong Kong and hiding in Australia at the American embassy for so many years," Chan said. Also same interview with Jackie provided a correction to how he got his name “Jackie”
When I go to try to learn English at school in Australia they call me Steve," Chan said.
"I tried to find a job.
"A guy said 'What's your English name?' and I said 'I don't have one'.
"My friend was a driver for the embassy.

Can anyone verify the source where it is claimed he "speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, English, and American Sign Language and also speaks some German, Korean, Japanese, Spanish, and Thai."? Because more recent interviews in Germany and Spain show he doesn't speak German beyond greetings and not even that in Spanish[1][2]. Term "Illegitimate child" should not be used
The term illegitimate child would no longer be used to refer to a child born to people outside of marriage. This term places undeserved blame and burden on the child of the parents be deeming them illegitimate. This should simply be referred to as "child outside of marriage."
