So, where did the igorots came from? Are they part of the larger Austronesian family or a separate ethnic line entirely?--75.36.39.36 22:30, 21 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Some Igorot groups formerly practiced headhunting." Do we also have a statement in other Wikipedia pages that state "Some [name] groups practiced beheading" in the first paragraph too?

Weasel Words

[edit]

Too many some.. some... some... in the overview (WP:WEASEL). It needs to be backed up with citation or it is WP:OR. Or it needs to be reworded so that it is more assertive that they did do it. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Getonyourfeet (talkcontribs) 18:39, 1 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The Igorot is not Filipino. — Carlos P. Romulo

The fact remains that the Igorot is not Filipino and we are not related, and it hurts our feelings to see him pictured in American newspapers under such captions as ‘Typical Filipino Tribesman.’

Geographical rather than Alphabetical Ordering of Ethnic Groups

[edit]

Requesting guidance: At some point soon I would like to re-order the list of ethnic groups here to reflect geographical location, rather than having an alphabetical listing. Would that be okay? Or does that risk creating some sort of north-south bias? I feel that a geographical arrangement would be significantly more informative to readers, but I'm also aware that alphabetical listings are sometimes preferable for being less controversial. Anyone care to tell me if this would be a sensitive matter? Thanks. - Alternativity (talk) 04:14, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

"Igorot" is derogatory?

[edit]

Someone (@Jojit fb) suggested over at Talk:Whang-od that the use of the term Igorot people is derogatory, bordering on libelous if used to describe a living person from this ethnic group. Is there actual basis for this suggestion? If so, is this enough ground to move the title to Cordilleran people (and Igorot society to Cordilleran society) to avoid offending this minority?--RioHondo (talk) 09:47, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Just to be clear, I didn't request to move this article ("Igorot people") to another name. I am just saying that if a biographical article is tagged as Igorot or categorized as Igorot people then there is a big possibility that it could libelous especially if the person doesn't want to be labelled as "Igorot." One of Wikipedia's policy is avoiding libelous content because of legal considerations. --Jojit (talk) 10:49, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Seeing as this is the only wikiarticle that deals with this ethnic group (this and Igorot society), with its application and reference in common use throughout the English and even Tagalog Wikipedias, I believe we may be offending our minority here if what you are saying is true. There are a couple of articles at Category:Igorot people for instance so if this is indeed derogatory and there are no other alternative articles to box them under, we should decide ASAP to move this article where it does not insult any of our minority.--RioHondo (talk) 11:09, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There are many Pilipinos who proudly identify themselves as Igorot. Yet there will always be some people who are not happy with the term. Before we rename everything because 2 or 3 people are insulted for whatever personal reason, it must be proven from reliable tertiary sources that Igorot is indeed a derogatory term, and moreover, a derogatory term in general use, not just by a few people only. -- P 1 9 9   13:56, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
My thoughts exactly. And now that you mention it, how do we really know if the person we're writing an article on is offended by the label? Or what his/her preferred label is? Who among these people from the CAR take pride in being called Igorot? For the few who take offense in being called Igorot, what shall we call them? Is there a neutral term for this ethnic group that is acceptable to all its members? I'm saying this because it's pointless to keep the article at Intsik when some Chinese Filipinos have issues with it.--RioHondo (talk) 14:22, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, wait for additional third parties to chime in. Look too at what the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (Philippines) says. Also maybe move up alternative names to the intro and maybe to the first sentence or two.--Iloilo Wanderer (talk) 13:27, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! This is a note to let the editors of this article know that File:Banaue Philippines Ifugao-Tribesman-01.jpg will be appearing as picture of the day on January 2, 2016. You can view and edit the POTD blurb at Template:POTD/2016-01-02. If this article needs any attention or maintenance, it would be preferable if that could be done before its appearance on the Main Page. — Chris Woodrich (talk) 06:42, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Igorot attacks continued in the 1950's

[edit]

This blog has links to google news reports of Igorot attacks occurring as late as the 1950s. The section on Spanish colonialism should also be extended.

http://storya-pilipinas.blogspot.com/2014/10/the-igorot-resistance-during-spanish.html

There is nothing in the article about the Igorot gold mines which were the big draw for Spanish invasion. Its like an article about Aztecs and Incas without mentioning the Conquistadors desire for gold.

Who is kyle?

[edit]

Came across this page after seeing an image of an Igorot headhunter on reddit. On the right-hand side i noticed the text saying "An Isneg woman, having just performed a dance with kyle."

No other place on the page is "kyle" mentioned - and the photo was supplied by "SU Linguist"... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.74.143.123 (talk) 17:01, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
