Attempt to grow this article
[edit]Hi. I know this is probably a difficult area of history to cover, since there is so much separate history for each east asian nation... But I think it would be helpful to readers to be able to piece together any kind of broad trends.
I've started by listing a bunch of wars. Already, you can see that the Mongol invasions are of huge regional importance.
I know this will never have a history as fluid or shared as the history of Europe, but my hope is that this comes even half way. I can already think of a few cultural events of regional importance:
- the start of Taoism and Confucianism
- the Mandate of Heaven, and how this affected notions of sovereignty and suzerainty for nearby powers.
- the arrival of Buddhism from India
- the surge of neo-confucianism (I think this affected the whole region, but I'm not sure)
- the advent and spread of gunpowder from China
- the spread of printing technologies from China
- the arrival of the Mongols and Europeans
Let's work together and do our best to make this a reality!

- This article is in very bad shape; the present organization of sections is very confusing; why does the religion come before general history? Why isn't religion part of the general history sections by time frame? Why is there an entire section on gunpowder? Not to say gunpowder shouldn't be mentioned and linked, but the main focus of this article shouldn't be on arsenal and firearms (afterall, this is not a military history article, but a general history of East Asia). Besides the obvious need for expansion in sections such as "1945 to present," this article needs some serious reorganizing. I might be up to the challenge, since I own books on general East Asian history.--Pericles of AthensTalk 18:00, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
Vietnam
[edit]Since this page is a listing of countries as a part of East Asia and although Vietnam might not be geographically part of East Asia, if you refer to East Asia it does include Vietnam as a part of cultural East Asia. Also, Vietnam (Annam) was subject to invasion from the Chinese and parts of Vietnams culture is adapted from Chinese traditions, like their zodiac, capital city, and language. I would argue that Vietnam should be on this list. Tortfeasor 22:32, 28 May 2006 (UTC)
I agree we can list Vietnam both in East Asia and Southeast Asia on many topics, just for reference purpose.
I agree that Vietnam should be on the list. If you can put part of Russia, (which is northeast Asia) on that list, Vietnam should be there too. The history of Vietnam is strongly linked with the other east asian nations, especially china. User: Tridungvo
References
[edit]The reference section is bad, with most of the ones cited having no more than a name and a date, which may be known to those already familiar with the literature, but for a beginner (like me) what's given is pretty much useless. They should definitely be expanded.
Restructuring
[edit]Does everyone agree that this page needs to be improved? I'm thinking about completely restructuring the article, because it is not nearly as organized as, for example, History of Europe and History of North America. Also, there is not much information here, and much of it doesn't fit very well. A whole section on the stirrup? If anyone has any objections, please let me know. Thanks! - Definitely needs reorganizing. Currently much too China centric. Needs expert input on History of Japan, Korean peninsula, Indo-china (Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Yunan before Chinese invasion) and the non-Han cultures displaced by the Han Chinese. Also, should the history of South East Asia be included? Is South East Asia part of East Asia? LK (talk) 13:22, 18 October 2009 (UTC)
Points to improve upon
[edit]- Add an opening paragraph
- Add more detail, especially about countries not in China
- Tweak sentences to become more fluent
- Expand "16th century to 1945" from a bulleted list

Communism in East Asia
[edit]I think this section should be added. It should include China, Vietnam, North Korea, and Cambodia with accompanying main articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Replaceinkcartridges (talk • contribs) 03:54, 26 December 2014 (UTC)
- There's basically nothing here about China post Kublai Khan, that is, the last 700 years... ;) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.251.170.27 (talk) 02:11, 6 November 2015 (UTC)
Article Scope
[edit]This article should not just describe the history but also describe 'East Asian History' as a concept and a theory not just the history by itself. I have made a mention of the origin of East Asian History in the introduction, but this certainly should be expanded upon. Sources for this history should come from journals/curriculum/books preferably authored by experts in the 'East Asian' field. World Historians can also be used when they are giving summaries of events. History should not be divided country by country but by timescale. The timescale if/when possible should be modeled after East-Asian history curriculum Sunriseshore (talk) 22:39, 15 August 2018 (UTC)
As a note, sources needed to be added but be cautious about placing sources here indiscriminately. As East Asian history is a specific academic field attempts should be made to acquire sources from that academic field rather than other places. Of course some sources may come from general or world histories but its important that much of the sourcing come from East Asian(academic field) historians. Periodiziation Scheme
[edit]In editing this article I have had difficulty setting an appropriate periodization that is from a proper East-Asian academic perspective from reliable sources. By East Asian perspective I mostly refer to Asian Studies departments in western countries but this could also be based from academia in east asian countries if reliable sources (preferably in English could be found. The Chinese language version of this article has a clear periodization but does not have supporting sources.
Thankfully I have this from Columbia University, within the framework of the article I think this link is a good model for categorizing time. http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/main_pop/kpct/index.html Sunriseshore (talk) 19:36, 24 August 2018 (UTC)
Update
[edit]I have edited the lead to make it more concise. I have omitted redundant information and added content that attempts to summarize what the article is all about. Please feel free to improve this further if you can. I have also created a Background section to help provide clarity and structure to the first few paragraphs. If you have questions, please send me a message. Thanks! Darwin Naz (talk) 23:53, 27 December 2018 (UTC)

Ancient East Asia Section
[edit]If I'm wrong, I apologize, but looking over the section titled Ancient East Asia, it goes into summarizing the history of each major sub-region, including, for example, Mongolia, China, Korea, Japan, etc. But I noticed that there are several "citation needed" tags on the *Japan* paragraph, and none on the Korean, Chinese or other paragraphs, despite the fact that, as far as the statements these tags are applied to are concerned, they are indeed historically accurate. I'll be adding some citations myself later today or tomorrow, just for completeness' sake. But the point is, for whatever reason, unless I am misunderstanding, someone seems to have singled out the parts about Japan as being "suspicious" or "dubious", when in fact, the same could be said of the other regions mentioned in this section, which have just as few references/citations. I'm not accusing anyone of anything, but it just struck me as odd how only the Japan section has a bunch of "citation needed" tags, despite all the sections containing almost not citations. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1700:C5B0:6220:43C:52C:173B:A4A0 (talk) 08:25, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
The Political Map of India
[edit]Here, the first image of the Map of East Asia on this page depicts wrong map of India. Please correct this. The entire territory of Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, is an integral part of India. 157.42.226.10 (talk) 14:07, 17 April 2023 (UTC)
