His photo, again?
[edit]This is a pretty awful photo. Are there other, higher quality photos that would be available for use by Wikipedia?
(current photo being: a grainy photo of Niemann with headphones in from 2019 through a webcam) 2606:9580:103:E:0:0:0:C01E (talk) 21:20, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
Net worth.
[edit]Hans' estimated net worth has recently been added to this page. The source does not seem very reliable and I thought there were previously issues with including net worth on pages (but not fully across this). Should the net worth information be kept or removed? - Has now been removed here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Hans_Niemann&diff=1175846500&oldid=1175810391&variant=en Hanne Thato (talk) 05:16, 18 September 2023 (UTC)
His photo, again, again?
[edit]I think this complaint is pretty self-explanatory. The current photo is outdated, grainy and unprofessional, and serves Niemann no justice. If anyone could upload a more recent photo to Wikimedia to subsequently replace the one used now, that would be very helpful! ArbDardh (talk) 12:57, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
- Now there are a few to choose from, thanks to a flickr photographer at the Tata Steel event. – SJ + 21:57, 3 February 2024 (UTC)
2024 Section
[edit]The 2024 section could use a lot of cleanup. Quite a few claims are completely unsourced. It might also need another pass on copyediting, though I tried my best. I'm a little tired. Spookyaki (talk) 04:43, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Looking closer, I think the whole article needs a copyediting pass. Commas are employed seemingly at random, phrasing is often unnecessarily complex, and there's not a lot of consistency in terms of score/place numbering. Spookyaki (talk) 06:33, 7 September 2024 (UTC)
- Finished copyediting the article myself. Noticed a few more issues that I'll bring up in another thread. Spookyaki (talk) 01:55, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
Various Issues
[edit]After copyediting the article, I have a few other issues that I want to get folks' opinion on. Firstly, there are a few somewhat load-bearing sources that were written by Niemann himself, specifically “Hans Niemann Reflects on his Perfect Grade Nationals” and “The Summer of the Norm.” I think since these sources were published by US Chess.org and Chess Horizons respectively, they probably meet Wikipedia's standards for primary sources, but I'd like to know what other people think.
The other issue I have is about the notability of some of the tournaments here. I'm unsure if all of them meet the WP:PLOT guidelines for indiscriminate collections of information. As I see it, maybe half of the tournaments listed at notable, but some I fail to see the relevance of.
Relevant tournaments include:
- 2012 Dutch National Youth Chess Championship—Possibly one of his first tournaments
- "First rated tournament in the US"
- 2014 Mechanics' Institute Chess Club Tuesday Night Marathon—Youngest ever winner, USCF master title
- 2014 World Youth Chess Championships—Major tournament
- 2018 U.S. Masters Championship—Received GM and IM norm
- 2018 Cambridge IM Norm Invitational—Received final IM norm needed for title
- 2019 Edward Lasker Memorial—Received GM norm
- 2020 FIDE World Youth Championship—Major tournament
- 2020 Charlotte Chess Center & Scholastic Academy GM Norm Invitational—Received final GM norm needed for title
- 2021 World Open—Major tournament
- 2021 U.S. Junior Championship—Entitled him to compete in the 2022 U.S. Chess Championship
- 2021 US Open—Major tournament
- 2022 FTX Crypto Cup—Related to controversy
- 2022 Sinquefield Cup—Related to controversy
- 2022 Julius Baer Generation Cup—Related to controversy
- 2022 US Chess Championship—Major tournament (not yet included, probably should be)
- 2022 Chessable Sunway Sitges Open—Caused rating to rise above 2700
- 2023 Dubai Open—Major tournament
- 2023 US Chess Championship—Major tournament
- 2024 Tata Steel—Major tournament
- 2024 French Team Championship—Caused rating to rise above 2700
- 2024 FIDE World Rapid & Blitz Team Championships—Representing new website
- Hans Niemann Against the World—Personally significant
- 2024 Speed Chess Championship—Match against Carlsen
Questionably relevant tournaments include:
- 2013 SuperNationals
- 2017 SuperNationals
- 2018 World Youth Under-16 Olympiad
- 2018 National K-12 Grade Championships
- 2019 Foxwoods Open
- 2019 ChessKid Games
- 2019 US Junior Championships
- 2020 FIDE World Youth Championship
- 2020 Texas State Amateur Championship
- 2020 VII Sunway Sitges International Chess Festival
- 2021 Vergani Cup
- 2021 Winter Chess Festival "Paraćin 2021"
- 2022 World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships—Major tournament but not a particularly noteworthy performance
- 2023 Open Chess Menorca
- 2023 Kazakhstan Chess Cup
- 2023 Baku Open International Chess Festival
- 2023 Las Vegas Super Swiss
- 2023 Uralsk Open
- 2023 Timșoara Grand Prix Rapid

- 2023 World Rapid & Blitz Chess Championships—Again, major tournament but not a particularly noteworthy performance
- 2023 Tournament of Peace
- 2024 Djerba Chess Masters
- 2024 Grenke Open
- 2024 Dubai Global Police Chess Challenge
Again, would love to hear people's thoughts! Spookyaki (talk) 02:16, 15 September 2024 (UTC)
