Proposed move (2006)
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section.
Would it not be better to have this page at Groningen, Groningen as there is a city in Suriname, Groningen, Suriname Fabhcún 22:06, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
- Or Groningen (Dutch city), Groningen (Surinamese city). And: Groningen (Dutch province) instead of Groningen (province)? Brz7 22:14, 6 June 2006 (UTC)
best town center
[edit]In 2006 Groningen was elected "de beste binnenstad" (the best town center) of the Netherlands.
By whom ? The dutch does not mention this. --84.143.97.225 12:57, 4 March 2007 (UTC) By god himself.
- And for whom? VKing (talk) 22:32, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
- I have added a source for this information (in Dutch, by lack of an English one). I've also corrected the year. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Woutgg (talk • contribs) 10:37, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
sister cities
[edit]I've added a section for sister cities. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, the city only seems to be twinned with Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. (See http://www.lgib.gov.uk/international/Establishing_a_partnership/twinning_search.html). I find this suprising as Newcastle is twinned with nine cities worldwide inclding Bergen, Nancy and Atlanta. I know Newcastle is one of the UK's major cities, but I would have thought that Groningen would still have more. If anyone can find anymore then please add them. When I have time (and if I can find the information) I'll add a little bit about Groningen's relationship with Newcastle. hedpeguyuk, 3 July 2005 20:40 (UTC)
Boroughs of Groningen
[edit]I suggest we remove this picture. I live in this city and neither me nor my friends have ever heard of this dividation. The city is divided into app. 10 smaller boroughs (wijken) If no response in 2 weeks I will create and upload a new picture.
Grtz!

- These are official, though largely bureaucratical, subdivisions of the city. I agree with you that there are more sensible divisions into boroughs and neighbourhoods. If you manage to create a better map, that would be nice. However, we should leave the current picture here until we have something better, I guess. Classical geographer 21:38, 5 September 2007 (UTC)
- Why not take Image:Map NL Groningen - Wijkindeling.PNG? In the category Maps of Groningen (city) there are maps with the location of all the neighbourhoods. Erwin1990 (talk) 21:03, 13 March 2008 (UTC)
Industry
[edit]I thought that one sugar factory is bought by the other? This has to be checked. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.192.37.47 (talk) 10:55, 20 January 2009 (UTC)
The Dutch Wiki [[1]] states that the CSM plant in Hoogkerk was transferred to the Suikerunie in the past. I however could not find any English articles concerning this subject, in or outside of Wikipedia to cite. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Lesire (talk • contribs) 20:56, 25 April 2009 (UTC)
- Dutch sources can be used after somebody translates the relevant sentences into English. Of course, English sources of equal quality are preferable. Andries (talk) 08:28, 30 April 2010 (UTC)
Etymology of the name
[edit]It seems interesting to me that the name "Groningen," which was apparently derived from "Groene Ingen" or "Green (Water) Meadows," is linked to the English dialect word "ing" (water meadow.) Perhaps there should be a section on etymology? SergioGeorgini (talk) 22:06, 7 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'd think it was the other way around. The village was called "Groene Ingen" long before English was developed meaning the "ing" would come from the Germanic root of English. Either way, it would be WP:OR on our part to include that in the Groningen article. I've been to the Groninger Museum and was interested in the exhibits about the city itself. However, I can't remember of they had an exhibit about the name of the city. --Marc Kupper|talk 07:56, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: moved to Groningen. Favonian (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Groningen (city) → Groningen – Rename Groningen (city) to Groningen in the same way Utrecht refers to the city and Utrecht (disambiguation) lists other uses including Utrecht (province). SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 04:08, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
The city is the most common usage perWP:COMMON. Therefore this article should be called Groningen with the rest in a disambiguation page. See also Utrecht and Utrecht (disambiguation). I propose we move it. SpeakFree (talk)(contribs) 13:37, 7 December 2011 (UTC)
- Support -- The province takes its name from the city, and the province is already at Groningen (province). A dab-hatnote will of course be needed. Peterkingiron (talk) 12:26, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
- Support. The province got 3,107 page views in the last 30 days, city got 11,648. Kauffner (talk) 08:24, 31 December 2011 (UTC)
- Support that's generally what that term is most commonly used to describe. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 09:02, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

Notable people, revised format
[edit]I`ve substantially updated and revised the section on notable people. I`ve found a goodly number in Wikipedia and there are more (with shorter entries) that I've not included. In particular I`ve now listed them (and their photos) in birth date order. This provides something of an historical perspective. But it conflicts with a request found to respect the (original) alphabetical ordering. I trust readers find the revised format more informative and attractive. ArbieP (talk) 16:56, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Like to know more
[edit]Hello, I would like to see the history expanded. Currently, it jumps from 1672, when the city was attacked by the bishop of Münster, to the end of World War II. What happened in the middle. --Goldenrowley (talk) 01:06, 8 September 2018 (UTC)
Wrong citations early history
[edit]Hi,
I am not a Wikipedia editor so I don't feel comfortable editing this page myself. But I'd like to stipulate the dubious references and text concerning the early history. The references were inserted by user The Most Comfortable Chair in the period 15-16 august 2020. They are currently numbered ref 22 and 23. The citation 22 (Houses of the Dead, 2020) does not contain a page 270. The citation 23 (Balkema) refers to a volume and page that does not go into the (pre)history of the city area of Groningen.
Furthermore, the statement "the first major settlement in Groningen trace back to the year 3 AD" is false. I'd suggest to use the 2018 report of the excavation around the Grote Markt to change this text: https://www.stichtingmenm.nl/index.php/publicaties/stadse-fratsen/124-stadse-fratsen-44-december-2018 2A02:A44D:E82B:1:955C:8BB4:2C05:BD86 (talk) 11:09, 28 January 2024 (UTC)
