My mother is the Mayor of Grimethorpe and so was my Grandad, it is about time people start to take an interest in the village as it is one of the up and coming areas in South Yorkshire. David Sean Clancy, currently residing in Australia Email: clancyclan@aapt.net.au

I think it still sounds really rubbish, could be called shiteland and wouldnt be any better or worse would it? Kingdingaling xxx

Grimethorpe regenaration

[edit]

I went to see the village last week not really knowing Grimethorpe I went with an open mind plus a view to buying a house.I was plesantly surprised its a small clean looking village with a few local shops lots of new houses being built there up for sale cheap if you want to get a step on the housing market this would be a good start !!!Hasslem homes are doing a good job. There are plenty of shops ie: Netto and some take aways a lovely park for the Kids and at the centre of the village is a church there was a new medical centre this place looks like its going to really take off there is a regeneration project going on in the village and is looking good keep it up. . —Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.3.30.226 (talk) 22:32, 23 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Grimethorpe Hall

[edit]

Any history on the Hall itself? it looks like it has seen better days from what i can see from google maps! maybe if it was restored and could be open to the public... maybe as a hotel... looks like it has a lot of potential! I have never been to the village, but I would visit to see the geographic and historic value Bankhallbretherton (talk) 21:44, 7 May 2010 (UTC) (note talk pages do not have to be spell checked!)[reply]

Content

[edit]

I have moved the following from article as unreferenced may be useful for content, following clean-up, if references can be found.

It gives a false impression of grimethorpe to have a heading of deprivation.Growing up their in the fifties and sixties I remember a village with a strong sense of community ,Neighbours who looked out for and cared for each other ,a glorious place to spend a childhood. The village was largely divided into three parts ,the village itself ,sometimes known as the seaside estate .the streets in the village were named after English seaside towns ,Cromer st,Hastings st etc.

The red city ,so called because of the red brick council houses, and finally the White city , again the area gained it's name because the houses ,which were built by wimpy to house miners in the 1950s,were cement rendered with a pebbledash finish ,that had a light sandy colour.

The village at that time maintained three working men's clubs ,the ex service men's club known locally as the bullet, the top club and next to it the miners institute ,or Stute, The large upper room in the Stute was popular for wedding receptions and was the original practice room for the grimethorpe brass band.

Local youngsters found plenty to entertain them in the surrounding woodland ,notable areas were White city woods ,as were the Dell ,a valley area with a stream running through, and red city wood ,

Once a year a fair came to nearby brierley ,and provoked great excitement among local children. At the fairs centre were two Steam driven boats known as shamrocks, these awesome machines moved on a central axle and eventually became almost vertical.
