Date of birth

Error 1: Gregory Martin was not born in 1962. 1957 as shown on the "St Albans School" link is more accurate. (I attended from 1964-71 and Gregory was some 4 years beneath me playing a discarded drum kit from Ringo Starr).

Error 2: St Albans School is not the oldest in England - again check the link above followed by the link at the bottom of that page - "Oldest Schools"

I do not feel empowered to make the changes, only to bring them up in discussion.

Restoring older version

I restored the older version, which had been deleted as a copyright violation. The subject of the article owns the content on his own website and doesn't think this is a copyright violation (i.e. gives permission for it to be used). Needless to say, this is not the only problem with the content, as it is a bit of a "wall of text" and doesn't have many external references. So it needs a fair amount of cleanup to be sure. I'm advising him that neither he nor anyone associated with him should directly edit the article, and now it'd be good if we could turn in and get this into proper shape!--Jimbo Wales (talk) 17:41, 6 December 2012 (UTC)

Starting on sources

I first started looking for independent third party reliable sources for information in the article and so far I am not finding much. The problem here is that the article is quite detailed and covers details that are pretty trivial and will not have been much noticed by the press. I think a stronger biography can be written by eliminating a lot of the details and focussing more on the essentials.

Having not gotten far with my first approach, I've instead taken to simply finding sources of all kinds to give us a base of raw material from which we can begin to reconstruct a better article. Please feel free to add to my list.--Jimbo Wales (talk) 11:54, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

birth year 1957

There is sufficient evidence to change the birth date to 21 January 1957. Martin's own book 'Dirty Rotten Scoundrel' refers to that date of birth on several places in the book. The book by Mark Lewisohn's Tune In: The Beatles: All These Years also mentions his birth in January 1957. Cleaned up

I have cleaned up and cited this article to the best of my ability. I removed a statement that I have been unable to find independent reliable verification for. Namely: that he performed the title role in Hamlet at the Guthrie Theater. If anyone has any reliable independent viewable verification, let me know or add it to the article. Astrologer

Greg Martin is also a publishing and practicing astrologer, which I think should be mentioned in the lead. A review of his astrology book Watch it come down is found here on beatles-freak.com. A number of birth data for the Beatles themselves and the people around them on astro.com are directly sourced to him. Up until c. May 2022, he also mentioned that fact on his own website, see this Wayback snapshot. Quote from that snapshot of his website:

"For most of his adulthood Gregory has led a double life as a master astrologer, in 2019 self-publishing a book titled Watch It Come Down in which he correctly predicted precisely what is happening in America today. No mainstream WP:RS or independent source has mentioned it, so it does not belong in the lead. He is definitely not publicly known for being an astrologer. It is mentioned in the body text in the "Writing" section. Softlavender (talk) 23:18, 7 September 2022 (UTC)

This article has been protected for 12 years

Disagree. What you say about bizarre claims and aspersions creeping in could apply to any article on any figure and the majoirty are not protected - only figures who are very controversial or extremely topical (currently) or political e.g. the US president. It goes against Wikipedia's ideals to restrict access to a more esoteric article like this for seemingly no reason. I came here as a I saw him in an episode of a sitcom and wondered who he was. I'm not saying he's not notable, of course he is, but he's not a controversial or topical or extremely well-known figure in general. It seems bizarre to me to protect an article on a writer/actor for 12 years and leave it so indefinitely because there was some mild vandalism in 2011! This person isn't widely known like some celebs or constantly in the news. Even his father, who is arguably more well-known, has an open access/non-protected article. It's just strange.
