[edit]@Oceanographer1: I'm not sure why you think that your edit to Geophysical fluid dynamics was an improvement. The previous version summarized a statement in a well-known textbook, and I'm not sure how to interpret your version. Are there really latitude-dependent effects that are unaffected by Earth's rotation? And what sort of flow is unaffected by substantial layering? RockMagnetist(talk) 22:47, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
- I have the textbook in front of me and Pedlosky clearly states that GDF is the product of research in oceanography and atmospheric physics and lately is has also been applied to study the outer core. Furthermore, you wrote that Pedlosky sees physical oceanography as a discipline that does not use GDF whereas the opposite is the case and atmospheric physicists and physical oceanographers are the main users of GDF. Compare both versions if you like.
- Best regards Oceanographer1 (talk) 17:11, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
- O.k., I now see that my text was misleading. Although I said that physical oceanography deals with smaller-scale flows, I didn't mean to the exclusion of GDF. And I'm the one who wrote the text earlier in the paragraph stating that GDF is indeed applied to the ocean, atmosphere and outer core, so clearly I don't have a problem with that. We could go with a modified version of your wording; I'd still like to see the references to latitude and layering explained more clearly. And if, as your username implies, you're an oceanographer, it would be great to have your input on the body of the article. That's the important part; the lead is just meant to be a summary of the article. RockMagnetist(talk) 22:09, 18 December 2016 (UTC)
