Name
[edit]@Lyndaship: Hi, what's your source for the common name being D'Hautpoul? The Clowes and Winfield in this article both use D'Hautpoult. Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:30, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting. Winfield in his French warships book p.91 gives D'Hautpoul as does Roche p.147. Don't have the Winfield British book to check Lyndaship (talk) 13:36, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- The 1793 Winfield uses the following: "Abercrombie (French D’Hautpoult, ex L’Alcide, ex Le Courageux, built 6.1803 – 2.1808 at Lorient. L: 2.9.1807)". Might be worth giving Rif Winfield a ping? Pickersgill-Cunliffe (talk) 13:43, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- Lets hope he pops up - didn't know he was on here. Just looked in his British 1817 onwards book - D'Hautpoult whereas Colledge goes with D'Hautpoul. Considering she was named after an individual Jean-Joseph Ange d'Hautpoul I think D'Hautpoul is correct Lyndaship (talk) 14:10, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- I should mention that both variations occur in French sources, so perhaps the French didn't consider the distinction important. You might note that in my more recent French Warships in the Age of Sail 1786-1861 (published 2015) on page 91, I use the version without the "t" at the end, but other sources (e.g. Demerliac) give both options. Incidentally, I might mention that the new book Spanish Warships in the Age of Sail 1700-1860 will be published min the Spring of 2023. Happy New Year!
