Golden Boot or Golden Shoe
[edit]I have always heard the award given to the player who scored the most goals at a football world cup referred to as the Golden Boot, however there is a case suggesting that it is properly called the Golden Shoe, as shown on the official FIFA website...[1] I would be interested to hear any other opinions. Calexico (Talk) 17:52, 25 Apr 2004 (UTC)
- I guess it is called the golden shoe... as evidenced here. Ian Manka Questions? Talk to me! 18:23, 23 December 2005 (UTC)

Golden Shoe Timeline
[edit]Was it first awarded in 1990 (as stated in the introduction) or 1982 (as stated in the section)? --85.116.207.246 19:57, 28 June 2006 (UTC)
- My guess is that the shiny trophy known as the Golden Shoe was officially first awarded in 1982 (when adidas decided to sponsor the award and the Golden Ball). Previously, if you finish as the top goalscorer, you're probably only recognized as the "top goalscorer". But nowadays, FIFA retrospectively recognizes all top goalscorers 1978 and before as a "Golden Shoe winner" [2], although I doubt they actually got an award in the mail! Maybe we should hunt down Mario Kempes and ask him about it! Chanheigeorge 18:11, 21 July 2006 (UTC)
- Err, how many players have appeared in the World Cup wearing shoes? And how many were able to overcome that handicap? We should be told! —Ian Spackman 14:21, 11 October 2006 (UTC)
- I surmise this jocular question is based on interpreting "shoe" as "black leather wingtip" or similar. The fact that the footwear is traditionally referred to in British English as "boots" is a vestige of the Dixie-Dean era when the thick clodhoppers really did cover the ankle. In the U.S.A they're called "soccer shoes". In most other languages the equivalent of "shoe", not "boot", is the word. FIFA regulations talk about "footwear". jnestorius(talk) 15:39, 15 October 2006 (UTC)
Use of Gilette, Adidas, etc.
[edit]Now I know it seems like advertising for the specific award to be listed under their commercially sponsored names, but I think for the sake of being accurate they should be. The official trophy is the Adidas Golden Shoe, it should be listed on here exactly as listed on the FIFA page. There are certain things on wikipedia that are blatant advertisement, then there are other things, like this, that are not. Note: Allianz Arena, RCA Dome, Nextel Cup, etc. All of these are major commercially sponsored venues or leagues that bare the name of the commercial company that sponsors. I don't think there is any difference here. The official name of the NASCAR series is "Nextel Cup" the official name of the trophy given to the player with the most goals is the "Adidas Golden Shoe." I'll wait for thoughts for a few days then be bold and make the changes myself. balleydancer2005 01:17, 4 July 2006 (UTC)
- No man, the sponser "adidas" is NOT capitalized. Here is the official page.http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/gshoe/index.html.Squadoosh 21:27, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
- No objection to the sponsor names being included but "Adidas" ought to be capitalized, like any other proper noun, just as it is in the Adidas article. Adidas's preferred typography is irrelevant to the article: we don't use the company's preferred font, for example. Dricherby (talk) 07:30, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

[edit]The visitors of the FIFA website have a sense of humour by voting for Portugal as the most entertaining team. Players taking a dive, coach also a good actor, etc.
- And why is this comment necessary? Regardless of anyone's opinion, the award has been made. End of story. --D'Olivier 21:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
Silver/Bronze
[edit]The official pages for the 2006 WC's Golden Shoe and Golden Ball awards also include silver and bronze awards for second and third; should this information be included as well? Pimlottc 15:10, 10 July 2006 (UTC)
- Absolutely. I came to this page to start a thread on this point exactly. You've beaten me to it ;). Indeed, the ...Ball and ...Shoe/Boot both comprise a "Golden", a "Silver" and a "Bronze" award, and all three receive a statuette in the appropriate color. Absolutely should be included. Redux 20:39, 11 July 2006 (UTC)
All-Star Teams
[edit]Why, in the table, is the All-Star Teams from 1990 and 1994 not listed?
I included all the all-star teams, from 1930-1994 they were chosen by journalists from magazines, broadcasting and newspapers from Europe and South America.
Assists and minutes played
[edit]The section on tiebreakers doesn't mention when this was introduced. My recollection of 1994 is that assists were being counted but Salenko and Stoichkov had one each. Since Stoichkov played more games than Salenko and still shared the award I guess that didn't count then; was it a 2006 innovation along with the silver/bronze awards?
In fact as I understood it in 1994, assists and goals were to be added into a single total to determine the golden boot, and I was glad that this travesty was not invoked s it turned out. But I may well have misunderstood... jnestorius(talk) 23:22, 25 August 2006 (UTC)
1978 "silver ball" - Which is correct?
[edit]Someone recently changed the "silver ball" entry for the 1978 tournament from Paolo Rossi to Rob Rensenbrink. And I remember reading in an Argentine publication that actually Ruud Krol was named second-best player. Which is correct? --ChaChaFut 15:19, 8 March 2007 (UTC)

Self-contradictory "Best Young Player Award" section
[edit]So, the article has concluded that the Best Young Player Award was first rewarded in 2006... before proceeding to list what would appear to be every winner of such a named award since 1930? As an outsider to the process that created this article, some clarification of this supposed paradox would help. I'm not an anorak of these awards - I presume there must have been some confusion between terms like "first formally awarded" and "first instituted" that requires dispelling? MRacer (talk) 15:21, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
- On their website FIFA does not seem to recognise any such award before 2006 so I have removed that. Kaizeler (talk) 20:13, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

All Star Team
[edit]On the page, it says that Djalma Santos was on the team in 1954, 1958, and 1962, yet I don't see him on the 1954 team. Is there a problem with the all-star team listing, or that particularly sentence? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.86.150.191 (talk) 00:46, 12 July 2010 (UTC)
More awards for 2010
[edit]Why haven't the Most Entertaining Team and the All-Star Team been announced for 2010? Velociraptor888 19:18, 14 July 2010 (UTC)
- The All-Star team has just been announced, with 6 player from the Spanish squad. If I'm not mistaken, the Most Entertaining Team award receiver is selected through a poll. Once this poll is closed and the votes are tallied, the result should become available. T.W. (talk) 16:09, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Golden boot multiple winners?
[edit]There are multiple winners listed for golden, silver, bronze boot for many prior years. However, the FIFA website only notes the top three places for most years. In 94 and 86 there are four listed, and in 66 and 62 there are 6 listed, but never does it go 19 deep as the table here does for 1962. FIFA's ordering is odd, as well, usually going by goals and then alphabetically, but 1962 doesn't conform.
Should the table be trimmed to conform to FIFA's listings?

Golden ball awards
[edit]In the current list, only the top three since 1978 is properly sourced with the RSSSF ref. Before that, most have nothing, some a mentioning in a FIFA biography or in a blog. Moreover, here a different list of winners is shown, with different names, including different winners in 1930, 1954 and 1958. In their official report, FIFA says nothing about the golden ball until 1982. Are we sure that this list is not original research? If not, what is the source for the current list? If there is no source for the current list, I guess we have to choose to delete the information before 1974, or change it to the list I mentioned above. --EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 07:11, 9 September 2010 (UTC)
Most Entertaining Team 2010: Brazil?
[edit]Why is Brazil mentioned as "Most Entertaining Team" at the 2010 World Cup? As far as I know FIFA hasn't awarded that title yet, and the related poll on their website is in favour for Germany. After all, what was so special about this recent Brazilian team? They failed to fulfill high expectations and fired their manager because of that! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.53.82.5 (talk) 17:00, 9 September 2010 (UTC)

Golden Ball - delete the table entries pre-1982
[edit]Given the Golden Ball was not officially awarded until 1982, I propose the table entries before that be deleted. There is some evidence that Kempes was selected by journalists as the best player of the tournament in 1978, but before this the Golden Ball does not appear to have been a concept.Kwib (talk) 01:14, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
- I made a similar comment in 2010 (see above). The information about Golden Ball before 1978 has been unsourced for more than four years now, time to be bold and remove it.--EdgeNavidad (Talk · Contribs) 21:48, 7 July 2014 (UTC)
I was about to ask for the same thing, but I found fifa.com website lists Mario Kempes as the winner of 1978 golden ball [1] Though I have no idea if the silver ball and bronze ball listed now in this article for 1978 are correct or not .pablodalma —Preceding undated comment added 18:00, 17 August 2015 (UTC)

2014 Brazil All-Star Team vs Castrol Index

Fair Play
[edit]Is it known why the 2014 Fair Play Award went to Colombia and not Switzerland? FIFA claims that "The FIFA Fair Play Award will go to the team with the tournament’s best disciplinary record. Only teams that reach the knockout phase are eligible."[4] But Switzerland (and also the U.S.) had fewer yellow cards than Colombia, and also reached the knockout phase.--Roentgenium111 (talk) 20:55, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
- Colombia had 5 yellow cards in 5 matches and 91 fouls according to FIFA statistics. That's one card per game. Germany had six cards in 7 games and also 91 fouls, and German players did not send any players home with serious back injury. Switzerland had 3 cards in 4 games with 67 fouls committed, that is more fouls per game than Germany but less cards. US had 4 cards in 4 games and 49 fouls committed, that's more cards but less fouls per game than Germany. On the FIFA website some people wrote "Colombia not only won for collecting just five yellow cards in their five matches, but for scoring highly in the criteria set by FIFA’s Technical Study Group, which includes positive play, respect towards the opponent and match officials, as well as the behavior of their team officials and supporters." To me Colombia-Brazil was not a very fair game, the referees just didn't give many yellow cards in this world cup. Sad for those who got injured. Murrerer (talk) 20:55, 21 July 2014 (UTC)
- Agreed. Of course Colombia shouldn't just be judged on their last match, but since Colombia had both more cards and (as you say) more fouls than Switzerland and the U.S. (and more cards and fouls per game than Germany), they certainly didn't have the "best disciplinary record" as the FIFA source I gave above would claim. But your quote seems to also come directly from a FIFA website official [5], so it seems FIFA is inconsistent with itself. Unfortunately, "positive play, respect towards the opponent and match officials, as well as the behavior of their team officials and supporters" is so vague that almost any team could have been deemed the winner based on this. --Roentgenium111 (talk) 13:31, 23 July 2014 (UTC)
FIFA Dream Team 2014 is not an All Star team
[edit]How is the FIFA Dream team 2014 being merged into the FIFA All Star team section? This Dream team was selected by registered users who clearly would share some bias when selecting players. The real all star team is selected by a FIFA Technical Study Group and the closest we have to something like this now is the Castrol index which is a statistical representation of the best players in the world cup. If fifa does not release an All Star Team by its technical group then the Castrol index would be closest technical representation of it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rsamra (talk • contribs) 14:06, 18 July 2014 (UTC)

Italy 1990 unofficial all-star team seems wrong
[edit]The so-called unofficial all-star team of Italy 1990 seems sketchy and unreliable, backed up by only two source in Dutch. Why would the same journalists choose Maradona as the Bronze Ball and leave him out of the team?
Many other sources identify an altogether different all-star team — mind you, it is always the same team in most other sources.
