Unclear how it works
[edit]Is the engine order telegraph an electrical or mechanical device? Does the bell in the engine room ring because a signal is sent through a wire, or because a cord is pulled? 68.5.46.193 (talk) 20:19, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
- Both. Early ones were mechanical wire, later ones were electric. The first electric machines used pulses (telegraph technology) and a form of escapement. Recent ones used synchros. I presume that modern stuff is now digital. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:44, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
- The article still doesn't explain the technical operation of a 'classic' EOT very clearly. --Ef80 (talk) 13:14, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
