The lead's first paragraph concludes: "He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career". Sorry, FA writers, but this is a non sequitur, and a vague one at that. His difficult life resulted from what? That he was the first? the first well-known? the first well-known American? that he chose writing alone? I'm looking at Meyers 138 (which doesn't have "well-known", by the way) and one should really insert a reason for the financial difficulties involving, for instance, the vicissitudes of a writer's paycheck, the copyright problems, the low wages paid to professional editors. Thanks, 209.51.172.142 (talk) 16:05, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
- Oh, "This template must be followed by a complete and specific description of the request"--no, I'm not going to dictate a bunch of experts what they should write. Moni3, can you come out of retirement for a sentence? 209.51.172.142 (talk) 16:07, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
- Not done: Just because something is not in the lead does not mean it is not in the article. The article adequately addresses these concerns, Poe's trailbreaking status and financial difficulties, further on with citations. To expect that level of detail in the lead renders is not a summary of the rest of the article. Eggishorn (talk) (contrib) 16:34, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

November Uprising
Hi,
I just found some interesting sources which show that Poe on 10 March 1831 volunteered to go to Europe to fight in the November Uprising. Should this be put into a one sentence in the military career section? Here is the bibliography and some links to published books. There are many more.
Kind Regards. Oliszydlowski, 18:06, 30 May 2019 (UTC)

Has one of the daguerreotypes been flipped?
It looks to me as if one of the daguerreotypes is backwards. Look at the slope of his eyebrows and mustaches in the first daguerreotype in the article compared to those in the last daguerreotype in the article. Aren't they reversed with respect to each other? Which one is shown correctly? Thanks.65.196.107.215 (talk) 17:14, 7 October 2019 (UTC)
- Daguerreotypes, by their very nature, are a series of mirror images. Often times, duplicates were made that then reversed the image again. And again. And so forth. Either way, what is your question regarding updating the Wikipedia page here? --Midnightdreary (talk) 22:57, 8 October 2019 (UTC)

There's a redundancy in the next-to-last introductory paragraph; "he died" begins two consecutive clauses. Also, the second sentence is much longer than the first.
Poe planned for years to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), but he died before it could be produced. He died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40; the cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, "brain congestion", cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other causes.
Please amend the wording a little and change the sentence structure.

- How would you feel about this? "Poe planned for years to produce his own journal The Penn (later renamed The Stylus), but it was never produced. He died in Baltimore on October 7, 1849, at age 40. The cause of his death is unknown and has been variously attributed to alcohol, "brain congestion", cholera, drugs, heart disease, rabies, suicide, tuberculosis, and other causes." Just not sure we can prove specifically that his death prevented The Stylus from happening. --Midnightdreary (talk) 15:26, 4 December 2019 (UTC)
- Maybe. I don't know anything about the facts, so I just suggested changing the phrasing. Other people should decide if the meaning should be changed. 208.95.51.53 (talk) 17:11, 4 December 2019 (UTC)

Change 2 occurrences of "Ostram" to "Ostrom."
(The last name of John Ward Ostrom is misspelled "Ostram" twice on this page: reference #64 and in the alphabetical list of sources. In addition to his articles on Poe's life, John Ward Ostrom compiled a two-volume collection of Poe's letters, 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑒𝑡𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝐸𝑑𝑔𝑎𝑟 𝐴𝑙𝑙𝑎𝑛 𝑃𝑜𝑒, which was published by Harvard University Press in 1948, the title page of which I am looking at right now and it says "Ostrom.")

Edgar Allan Poe..."was an American writer, editor, and literary critic." should be restored and "was a world-renowned region rat." should be removed
The original first line was "Edgar Allan Poe (/poʊ/; born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic." Someone has defaced this and put in "was a world-renowned region rat." I have not done any editing in wiki for many years and can no longer remember how to edit the article myself. Furthermore, I not see the edit tab, so I suggest that someone correct immediately. Agodlas (talk) 14:19, 1 February 2020 (UTC)Alan Godlas

Cooping theory
"One theory dating from 1872 suggests that cooping was the cause of Poe's death, a form of electoral fraud in which citizens were forced to vote for a particular candidate, sometimes leading to violence and even murder." should be removed. The term "cooping" does not exist. It was evidently deliberately coopted c. 2000, possibly as a way to legitimize future election fraud by creating a false narrative of historic election violence in Baltimore.
- The term does not exist? It is used, frequently, and can be easily sourced. Regardless of when it was coined, the term seems quite real. I dare say it sounds like you might be indulging in some original research. --Midnightdreary (talk) 14:33, 19 October 2020 (UTC)
- Also, a quick Google Book search finds the term used in 1910. --Midnightdreary (talk) 14:34, 19 October 2020 (UTC)

Alma Mater
I don't think you can claim an alma mater to a school you were thrown out of. It is my understanding he did not graduate West Point Academy, and was thrown out. MonsieurET (talk) 02:30, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- I'm not sure if you read it first but the article does discuss the circumstances of his leaving West Point. Nevertheless, your point seems valid and worth talking about. --Midnightdreary (talk) 11:55, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- I was referring to the info box which lists schools he graduated from. Maybe this is common now to call it an Alma Mater for attendance only.MonsieurET (talk) 14:10, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
- Again, anyone reading the article would get clarification on his experience at West Point. Note the infobox does not say he was a graduate, but that West Point was his alma mater, a term which generally refers to an institution one attended. --Midnightdreary (talk) 20:13, 16 April 2021 (UTC)

Suggestion
Part of the second paragraph should be removed because information about his early life can be read in the section after this one.Gmora1011 (talk) 18:05, 22 April 2021 (UTC)
- That is intentional. The first few paragraphs serve as an introduction that summarizes the remainder of the article to follow. Are you suggesting that this featured article violate the expectations set forth in the Wikipedia policy on ledes? --Midnightdreary (talk) 12:32, 23 April 2021 (UTC)

Edgar Allan Poe's death was a mystery, but there is theories circling his death. One theory on his demise is that he did not die on October 7th, he faked his death to create one last huge mystery. Toveiscool! (talk) 16:04, 17 November 2021 (UTC)
