N. America & U.K. sections would improve the article
[edit]Given that this article is in the English-language version of Wikipedia, I believe it could benefit from being sectioned-off into North American and U.K. sections. I'm in Canada, and most of the DIY how-to magazines of the 1940s, '50s, etc were published in the U.S. But I've recently learned that the U.K had Practical Mechanics, Practical Householder, and perhaps other DIY magazines that were very influential and empowering after WWII.Joel Russ (talk) 17:10, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
- I’m interested in the general use of the abbreviation “DIY.” I don’t remember it really being in use in the USA prior to about 2000. It was already a common abbreviation in british English , but hadn’t really spread here it seems 69.9.133.169 (talk) 19:21, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

Proposed merge of DIY ethic into Do it yourself
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
This merge was proposed by User:ILIL. For a fair discussion, I think it should also be noted that ILIL also recently removed a large amount of unsourced content from the article. Daask (talk) 00:07, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- Support - History, motivations, ethic, and forms of practice are largely inseparable in this area. Daask (talk) 00:06, 26 April 2020 (UTC)
- Agree. Read through the article. It doesn't say or cover anything largely different from what's covered in the one the editor is suggesting to merge it with. Suesonigeevip (talk) 18:55, 7 May 2020 (UTC)
- Merge – Ethics is a part of DIY. The separation of ethics into an article does not have much reason. Also, the current content makes sense and adds value if placed in one location; the DIY article. Vinay84 (talk) 15:37, 23 May 2020 (UTC)
- Merge - Same topic. Deleted content can be merged too, if relevant (and not repetitive). -Jason A. Quest (talk) 12:53, 28 June 2020 (UTC)

- Merge - the 'DIY ethic' article is mainly about 'DIY' music scenes. It can be merge into 'Do it yourself'. However, it would be good to include an expanded ethics subsection if references are found to support it. Also, it could be useful to discuss the difference between DIY product creation/assembly and DIY culture production, Maker culture probably blurs the line. Jonpatterns (talk) 16:09, 1 July 2020 (UTC)
- Oppose - this article is about a related but distinct subject, namely DIY music. The article should be worded better to reflect that, but it is a distinctly separate topic. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 14:14, 13 July 2020 (UTC)
- Support. Not much difference. Enjoyer of World (talk) 10:36, 22 August 2020 (UTC)

- Oppose - Enough content here to justify a separate article. --evrik (talk) 15:18, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- Merge due to overlap. The DIY ethic article lede is so broad that it duplicates the scope of Do it yourself; the content partially reflects DIY culture in the creative arts, including music, but even that slips from time to time (cf the material on India). So, the suggestion made to merge seems the most reasonable current course of action; the suggestion for renaming the page to narrow the scope is also reasonable. I suggest that the existing material is brief enough to supplement existing material in Do it yourself#Subculture, which already cover many of the ideas from music in the current iteration of DIY ethic. Klbrain (talk) 10:42, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
- Support sounds good. The articles are almost identical, and there's no point in having twin articles. This is an encyclopedia, not a competition to make the most identical articles.

- Merger complete. Klbrain (talk) 10:55, 21 April 2021 (UTC)
Inconsistent
[edit]Excuse me, Why DIY is a part of anti-consumerism? I don't the idea came along. 125.166.76.62 (talk) 11:54, 9 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'm in agreement here, The article here analyzes DIY as a new phenomenon, and seems to forget that DIY is only possible due to consumerism. 96.42.26.63 (talk) 22:06, 19 December 2023 (UTC)
I'm a little baffled as to why the downside of power tools section is in an article about DIY. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.73.27.161 (talk) 13:31, 14 October 2024 (UTC)
