In the below, change "womenfolk" to "women." Womenfolk is an archaic usage and is possible pejorative. Other traditions and significance

During the season of Diwali, numerous rural townships and villages host melas,[134] or fairs, where local producers and artisans trade produce and goods. A variety of entertainments are usually available for inhabitants of the local community to enjoy. The womenfolk, in particular, adorn themselves in colourful attire and decorate their hands with henna. Such events are also mentioned in Sikh historical records.[135][note 15] Nynative (talk) 23:49, 29 October 2019 (UTC)

Please add Guyana as one of the countries that celebrate Diwali. It is a national holiday there and I grew up celebrating this as a major holiday in that country where about half the population are descendants of Indians and are practicing hindus. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.84.112.12 (talk) 23:58, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Add the name 'Deepavali'. In south india, singapore, malaysia etc 'Deepavali' is the name widely used. Not Dipawali or Deepawali but 'Deepavali'. Its a major hindu festival and not representing the names correctly isn't the way. Kindly correct it.

Add the following at the end of but within the "Issues" section. Feel free to rephrase as you deem fit.

=== Preventative and remedial solutions ====
Though origins of Hinduism and Diwali go back at least 4000 and 2500 years respectively, the use of fireworks for celebrations in India commenced only in 17th century by the mughal and marathas rulers.[1] As a consequence of firecracker born pollution, India's National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered a ban in 2020 on firecrackers on diwali festival in NCR region and several states too introduced restrictions or ban on the sales, storage and use of firecrackers. Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has developed environment friendly green crackers by using less polluting raw materials which emit 30% less chemical pollutants and comparatively less noise (110-125 decibels versus 160 decibels). However, green crackers still contain harmful pollutants such as aluminium, barium, potassium nitrate and carbon.[2]

Dear Wikipedia editors, I would like to put a request to change the Spelling for 'Diwali/Divali'. In Hindi language 'Diwal/Dival' means 'Bankrupt'. One who involved in the bankrupt is referred as 'Diwali / Divali'. The real spelling is 'Deepavali' which means Deepam + Aavali (தீபம்+ஆவளி). Deepam means lamps

(அகல் விளக்கு), ஆவளி means

'Varisai' which means 'Lining up the lamps'. This festival is to worship Goddess Lakshmi who is the one to give us wealth. So, please change the spelling for Diwali. Thank you. 193.119.91.44 (talk) 11:11, 5 March 2021 (UTC)

Could someone update this article to include Diwali celebrations outside of the Indian subcontinent? Removal of Air polloution content

@Kashmiri

Hi - I noticed you reverted my removal of the air pollution content. Your reasoning is that it was "appropriately sourced but removed with poor explanation". I provided full explanations in my edit summaries. Most of the sources used are news articles that do not actually mention the statements made in the article. Additionally, these sources must comply with WP:MEDRS if biomedical claims are going to be made. None of these sources comply with this policy and i think this content should be removed.

Thanks,

Starlights99 (talk) 20:41, 20 December 2022 (UTC)

Hi, saying that air pollution is harmful to the respiratory system does not need MEDRS. However, this was not the main problem. The problem is that you have removed any references to Diwali causing pollution, even when sourced, which went against WP:PRESERVE. At the same time, you added more on Diwali celebrations, sourced to a questionable source. This looked a bit like whitewashing the festival. — kashmīrī TALK 21:39, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
@Kashmiri
Hi,
There were many other claims in the section which did meet MEDRS such as:
  1. "Getting exposed to harmful chemicals while firing crackers can hinder growth in people and increases the toxic levels in their bodies"
  2. "When these compounds pollute the air, they increase the risk of cancer in people"
  3. "The air and noise pollution that is caused by firecrackers can affect people with disorders related to the heart, respiratory and nervous system."
  4. "The harmful fumes while firing crackers can lead to miscarriage."
All of these are very clearly biomedical claims. Additionally, the sources that were used to support these claims didn’t actually include this information, and even if they did, they wouldn’t be in line with MEDRS anyway.
As for your comment on “whitewashing”, I’m not sure what you are referring to. The only other contributions I made are some grammatical changes and some contextual info to the Jainism section. However I do apologise if it came across that way.
Based on the above, I still feel the air pollution section should be removed, or at least content relating to biomedical claims.
Let me know your thoughts,
Thanks,
Starlights99 (talk) 22:33, 20 December 2022 (UTC)
@Kashmiri
Hello,
I hope you are well. Do you have any thoughts on my comments above?
Kind regards,
Starlights99 (talk) 22:54, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi, Sorry for not replying earlier. I agree that these claims go a bit too far and do merit rewording and better sourcing. I just don't think that poor wording is a sufficient reason for the removal of any mention of environmental and health hazards associated with Diwali. — kashmīrī TALK 23:18, 26 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Kashmiri
Thanks for the response. In that case there are a few points to consider:
  1. I understand WP:PRESERVE is important but I don’t think re-instating all the content is the right move ( IE: the biomedical claims with unreliable / non-compliant sources)
  2. I have created a sandbox page with some draft words. Please have a look and let me know your thoughts / feel free to make some changes. Link: User:Starlights99/sandbox
Thanks,
Starlights99 (talk) 12:13, 29 December 2022 (UTC)
Hi,
Following discussions on the reliable sources notice board about this article, it was agreed that many of the sources for the biomedical claims are not reliable. Therefore whilst suitable sources are being identified, the improperly sourced biomedical claims have been removed.
