how come there is no refernce in this current article of him converting to Islam and the arien brotherhood .there was before.....who removed it?

Serious Cleanup
Removed some vandalism from the 'Early Life' section, including references to racism and 'smoking his way out of a $50m contract' 87.194.80.113 16:14, 16 March 2007 (UTC)
This article is a complete mess, it needs serious revision. I added the cleanup tag. The article should follow a certain flow with Chappelle's beginnings then his early career and finish with his rise to fame with the Chappelle show. I've added a section detailing his movie career which was previously absent. For example articles to use as a guide for making this one see Katie Holmes, Diane Keaton, Jake Gyllenhaal, Eric Bana, and Angelina Jolie (all of them featured articles).--Joshua4 21:25, 23 December 2006 (UTC)
- I agree. This article needs to be fixed and featured! If you look at biographies that were featured articles like Jenna Jameson, Weird Al Yankovic, & the ones you mentioned, you'll notice they have organised headings. So I've started by adding major headings, sub-headings, & relevant info under them. There's still a lot of work to do but it can be done. Spellcast 11:24, 15 February 2007 (UTC)
New York Post Article / Sources Question
On August 2nd of 2006, New York Post's own gossip columnist Cindy Adams ran the following story, wonderfully titled "Here's What's Behing the Chappelle's Story" (link: http://www.nypost.com/seven/08022006/gossip/cindy/cindy.htm). Being that Cindy's very profession has the dangerous word "[gossip" in its' very name, I have chosen not to alter any of the information concerning Mr. Chappelle's departure from his show. I must admit, that the story checks out rather well against his statements made on Oprah, yet that hardly constitutes a surprise, since I don't doubt that Ms. Adams watches Oprah, too.
In any case, I've taken the liberty to add the link into the bottom-most "links" section on the page. I do wonder if such content is suitable for the encyclopedia, since there is a question of] whether or not Wikipedia assumes that its' well informed readers would look up Cindy Adams prior to acceptance of her gossip column as a solid fact.

religious conversion
Can we have a reputable source for Dave Chappelle's religion? Elakhna Elakhna 12:14, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Does anyone know if he practices actual Islam or is he a member of the Nation of Islam? This article states that he has been a Muslim for several years, was his support of marijuana just an act? Neither Islam nor the NOI support the use of narcotics.
- In his inside the actor's studio interview, Dave Chappelle stated that he had used marijuana, sometimes heavily, and that he used it while writing the script for "half-baked." Though not a great movie, as Dave concedes, there is some good stuff in the movie "half-baked," which, believe it or not, has something to say about marijuana. In an episode during season 2 of Chappelle's show, he poked fun at himself at 24, quoting himself as having had the motto "Hey, hey, hey - smoke weed every day." In another episode in season 2, he told the audience that he had quit using the drug. No, I don't think Dave Chappelle's support for marijuana was an act, but I don't think using the drug makes him insincere in his beliefs, just imperfect like the rest of us.
Sevenwarlocks 22:09, 15 February 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, but how many Christians do you know that get drunk and have premarital sex? Most followers of certain religions break the rules fairly often.
- The Nation of Islam has nothing to do with the true religion of Islam. NOI is a hate group - nothing more. As for Chappelle's marijuana smoking, I agree with the person's comment above. Most people don't follow all of their religion's proscriptions. --jonasaurus 05:36, 30 August 2005 (UTC)
- Is that what the confessional is for? Oh I was just joking. Kenimaru 09:04, 5 February 2006 (UTC)
- He's a mainstream Muslim (as opposed to NOI)- he regularly offers Friday prayers at the 96th Street Mosque in Manhattan, and is frequently spotted at other masjids in NYC (mostly downtown.) He seems to lean towards Tablighi Jama`at masjids and has been seen at their main center in Queens. Considering that South Africa is the major center for tablighi/Deobandi activity in the English-speaking world, there's a good chance he went there in jama`at. There are a couple of threads in the Islamica web forum reporting sightings and gossip on him from the perspective of his Muslim fans - including people mentioning seeing him at prayers in NYC at the very time he was first rumored to be in rehab. As for the content of his comedy (and it's presumed relation to his real life,) I don't think he would claim to be a good Muslim, just a Muslim.
- Indeed. Same as I might call myself a Christian, though I smoke pot, have not married my long-term partner, and even -- gasp! -- laugh at Chappelle Show. ie. like damn near everyone else in America. Scratch the surface and it's sin all the way through!
Does anyone know his other son's name? and how do you pronounce the name mentioned in this article?
It's the arabacised version of the biblical name Solomon. Prononce as sul-a-man. 67.183.93.122 04:28, 17 February 2006 (UTC)
His son's name is spelled Suleyman. There are some Sufi (mystical Islam) schools of thought that use marijuana as a religious tool though it's not common or mainstream and I doubt that's why he was using it during the writing of Half-Baked.
Chappelle Theory
I rewrote the Chappelle theory paragraph to reflect a little more of the insanity of it all, but does anyone know why this should remain in the article, besides being a pretty entertaining piece of satire?--71.36.216.75 22:50, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
- Its inclusion in the main article doesn't seem appropriate, considering that it's speculation at best and mean-spirited satire at worst. An external link to the Chappelle Theory site would more than suffice.-ERobson 07:00, 20 December 2005 (UTC)
Is there a surprising end to the theory that convinces us it's true? Because reading the first 5 or 6 pages, the shit just got thicker and thicker. Oprah whipsering in his ear and telling him that Farrakan killed Malcom, and that her and Robert Johnson would do the same to him? Okay. Joke's on me. I'm ashamed I even read that far. I'll fall for anything.
The theory itself is another Chappelle joke. That is classic Chappele genius. As soon as I got to the part where Oprah was in his house and whispers a threat to him, I realized that he just wrote it himself to see how many people would be stupid enough to believe it. It even reads like his sketches; It starts off believable, but then gets more and more ridiculous and funny as it goes on. Dave is truly becoming the modern day Andy Kaufman; The joke's on the audience.
I don't know... Farrakhan is a hatemonger who hates whites yet loves Hitler. He and Al Sharpton are both insane. I don't understand blacks spitting on their tribal gods of Africa for Islam anyway, but Farrakhan is dangerous. He's the kind of person who doesn't understand reason, but understands a stick and a gun- both advisable if you have to be near the guy. He should change his name to Blackdolf Hitler. David Duke may be a monumental blowhard and a non-threat, but Farrakhan is nuts. The Joker is more lucid. Though the inclusion of Bill Cosby, after his attacks against blacks in his speeches, seems unreasonable.
- The chappelletheory website has been updated stating that it is a satire and parody done by anti-social.com. Chiok 16:28, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Birth Year
Is there a reason why two birth years are given for Dave Chappelle? He wasn't born twice...
I haven't seen any reasoning for two birth years. Every source I've seen has listed his birth year as 1973. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] I have updated the page. Note also that Dave says in January of 2005, "I'm 31 years old..." [6] Zebov 21:39, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Article Plagiarism?
Was looking at the following article from the AP: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060302/ap_on_en_tv/people_chappelle
Is this plagiarizing the Wikipedia article, or is it the reverse? In particular, I was looking at the following paragraph from the AP article: "Last May, Chappelle stunned his fans and the entertainment industry by skipping out on a $50 million contract and leaving "Chappelle's Show" in mid-production. He spent two weeks in South Africa before returning home to his farm near Yellow Springs, Ohio. He has since resumed performing live standup."

wolrd of warcraft
Does anyone have the source of when Dave Chappelle said he played WoW?
Everyone plays WoW nowadays, I just can't imagine him being an enthusiast. I doubt that he can find much time to play WoW while he has a full blown movie star career. Probably a false statement.
I believe it was a direct quote that he played. And being "full blown" was part of the problem if I remember correctly. His message and his intellect were being undercut by cheesy catchphrases. Anyway, I removed his supposed character's name on WoW. Even if it is true, stalkers should have to work harder. I did some research and found that any inquiries on WoW forums about his character were deleted. If he plays, let him enjoy his gaming in peace. Neutralitybias 04:54, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

=============
There is ONE article where it states he said he plays WoW in a standup routine. ONCE. How does this merit saying "He has stated he is an avid player of World of Warcraft". This is just WoW fanboys trying to include a popular comedian in their circle of gaming. Im changing it to be a little more truthful as there isn;t enough evidence to say he is an AVID player, if a player at all. Could just have been part of his sketch.

Chappelle at Southern Illinois University Carbondale...
The bit about Chappelle stopping his performance at Carbondale due to an audience member repeatedly yelling, "I'm Rick James, Bitch!"--Cite your source! It looks as if someone made this nugget up as there are no corroborating stories on the web.
Former student at SIUC and I was there and have no recollection of him rebuking a student. Further, there wasn't any mention of it in our campus newspaper. Trust me, Carbondale is Dramadale, it would have been a juicy topic for at least three months. Anyway, the below objection is seconded. Neutralitybias 04:54, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

The Chappelle Theory
People keep mocking the Chappelle theory, but something, I'm not saying that theory exactly, really shook him up. Even to this day he still doesn't explain what happened, but says, "I was tired of other people trying to control the show". Something pretty rough happened to him and the Chappelle theory may be a loose explanation.
Just saw him last night at a small club in SF. Someone asked about the "Chappelle Theory" and he said he was familiar from it, but it couldn't be farther from the truth. He blames the "white man" -- which he was careful to point out that was not inclusive to "white people in general" -- but rather, wealthy Comedy Central executives. -- J.
Okay, I don't expect you guys to take my word for this but there was a point at which the Chappelle Theory's website had a message, ostensibly from the creator, saying he made the whole thing up to prove how gullible people were, and that he was appalled that so many took him seriously. Obviously it's no longer there, and I imagine there's a very remote chance the site was vandalized, but obviously it's very unlikely. If I'm stating something that's already widely known I'm sorry--there's no article on the "theory" itself. Trivia mention
Trivia mentions the lost episode with the San Andreas lyric. I haven't removed it, but it seems to me that the idea is that "He wrote this song in '94" and that SA is in the early '90s and that the song is about Tupac not being dead.

This should be under this type of catagory. Chappelle mentions in one of the commentaries from the season one DVD that he and neal hate when people call sketches "skits". The picture of Dave Chappelle in the article
Hi guys,
I was just wondering: Is there honestly no better picture of Dave Chappelle that is allowed to be used on wikipedia? I mean, I know he likes doing skits and jokes about drug use, but this picture seriously looks like he is staring at you and is about to get mad, not to mention he also looks like he just used some substance; his skin tones and shadings don't look like normal Dave. Can someone who knows how to do these things find a better picture - preferably a happy/neutral one? thanks
Fair use rationale for Image:DaveChappelle.JPG
Image:DaveChappelle.JPG is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Interest in skateboarding
Dave likes to skateboard. In the first episode of the first season of Chappelle's Show, during the credits he says "[something]...but I love skateboarding!" and proceeds to skate down a road. Also, an interviewer mentions how he turned up on just his skateboard. Worth mentioning at all?

Repetitive
This article is very repetitive, using many of the same quotes and largely saying the same things over and over again. Also, shouldn't the details of his life be more intertwined with / before his career details instead of after them? Comedy Central and Dave Chappelle
According to the E! Top 100 Meltdowns interviews (shown on the 26th of January and then on the 27th again) they said that the Chappelle's Show: The Lost Episodes DVD's are NOT the Season 3 episodes, instead they were tossed out sketches and footage for Seasons 1 and 2 compiled together.
However, it is also of note that according to E!'s online article (http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=1bfc3068-8e5c-452b-ab76-781763b559e7) Dave's episodes for season 3 were or will be shown on television.
The broadcast by E! on Saturday the 26th of January is the newest information. If anyone can find a transcript of that and post a link, that should work to credit some of this information. I wonder if anyone has any sources regarding this information.

I changed the character pseudonym that Dave Chappelle's character on Half Baked uses from "Sir-Smoke-A-Lot" to "Mr. Nice Guy", more accurately representing what the character calls himself in the movie. I accurately remember this from the movie, as the old entry "Sir-Smoke-A-Lot" was the name of a fictitious rapper of the same name within the movie, and not the name Dave's character gives himself as the name of his pot dealing escapades. The original entry was taken from IMDB.com, which has also has the same error. Regarding information about DC's kids' names (under "Personal Life"), is a paparazzi website like blackcelebkids.com a reliable source? No. This should be removed.

James'
In the sentence "James' estate disagreed with the proposed comical tone of the film and put a halt to the talks." "James'" should be changed to "James's". The apostrophe is only used after the "s" when the word is plural and already ends with an "s" e.g "I will visit my grandparents' house." "grandparents'" is referring to two grandparents. If the word is singular and ends with an "s" another "s" must be added after the apostrophe. —Preceding unsigned comwwrwmegrggnt reweadded by 114.32.124.227 (talk) 04:36, 10 December 2009 (UTC)

"Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason self-published media, whether books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, Internet forum postings, tweets, etc., are largely not acceptable."
Just because something is on a website does not make it true. Anyone can put anything on a webpage. So your sources are "verifiable" in that they can be looked up but they are not reliable.
I don't want to get into an edit war with you but until you include at least one reliable source I will continue to revert your additions of "Anand". If either of us do more than three reverts we can be blocked so you can take this issue to an admin and see what they think. MrBlondNYC (talk) 07:59, 26 April 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, corroboration is definitely required for something like this, especially since the name "Anand" is closely associated with Hindus and Hinduism while Chappelle is a Muslim. Acsenray (talk) 22:06, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Dave Chappelle's Block Party is mentioned in the 2007 - Present section, but it was made before that. He talks about it in the 2006 Inside the Actors Studio. In his television list, it says 2006.

Dave Chappelle Scholarship
From the Inside The Actor Studio page: "For its 200th show, James Lipton became the guest subject of the show. He was questioned by Dave Chappelle whom James picked personally. The show ended with Pace University provost announcing that the college is sponsoring a scholarship in Chappelle's name to his high school alma mater." If anyone knows where on the Pace or Duke Ellington webpage there's an official declaration/explanation of this it would make sense imo to include it in Dave's article and/or the Pace/Ellington pages. 75.158.104.172 (talk) 23:26, 24 August 2011 (UTC)
Black and White?
Why, oh why must "African-American" be considered the racial compliment to "white"? Does this make sense? The hyphenated term is used in a patronizing way, and I believe it has become a forced habit - not supporting what it purports to favor -- that all souls are created equal. If one uses the term "African-American" one should balance that with "European-American". Just the same, if one uses the term "black", one should then be correct in using the term "white". Otherwise, it is PC BS and doesn't support anyone but the person using the term. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Strideman (talk • contribs) 15:52, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
First off that is wholly outside the topical scope of the David Chapelle article, and sounds like a crusade that has no place in any wiki article unless the article is about a person of notability promoting it or his/her work. Secondly until this country finds some common sense and simply starts calling ourselves AMERICANS I'm afraid that IS the flavor of the month, like it or not. Even then "American" provides no ethnic identity, like the standards of academia that include Asian, Caucasian, and Negroid. It's certainly not a situation of "black and white" but all of this just shows the kind of ****storm that's brewing when race becomes the focus. In the end the best quality for one's skin to have is not determined by its color but how thick it is- you have to laugh that it could ever be possible to have a color blind world while people are so caught up with asserting their ethnic and cultural identities. That's not just black but Latinos, Italians, Irish, Jews, you name it. I took from this article an amazing amount of respect for David Chapelle, for having the integrity to not sell his soul to stay in the industry- but have an equal amount of respect for all the performers who have to grin and bear it to practice their craft. I don't know which path I would take if it were me, but it's a shame David can no longer help to bring down the barriers of racial divide in this world by helping us laugh at the absurdity of it all. Under "Return"
There is a quote attributed to Dave Chappelle, it is labeled with a reference number of 28 in superscript, this quote I do not believe to be correct. It appears the author of this quote, did a sort of paraphrasing or mashing together of what he said. If you go to the source which it is said to be referenced by, it takes you to Oprah.com, where he says this:
"So then when I'm on the set, and we're finally taping the sketch, somebody on the set [who] was white laughed in such a way—I know the difference of people laughing with me and people laughing at me—and it was the first time I had ever gotten a laugh that I was uncomfortable with. Not just uncomfortable, but like, should I fire this person?" this is from Oprah's website, URL:http://www.oprah.com/oprahshow/Chappelles-Story/5
This is different than what is written on his wikipedia page under the section called "Return".

Tabloids
Given the repeated and long lasting attacks tabloids have printed against Chappelle, IMO they are note-worthy. My approach to this is not to cite the tabloids but to cite secondary reliable sources like Time or quoting Chappelle's reactions to the attacks given to a reliable source (like Oprah). The stuff about drugs, mental health, and conspiracy theories about his leaving the show are not just toxic and without factual merit; at this point they represent a huge percentage of the coverage on Chappelle. A NPOV biography must confront and analyze such rumors without emotion and prejudice, based solely on RS. Just my two cents. What does the community think? Jay Dubya (talk) 12:35, 27 March 2014 (UTC)
How to Quote a Book
One of the primary reasons this article failed GA review, from what I can tell, is sourcing problems. As I was reviewing the sources, it seems that a lot of article editors have cite web down, but aren't familiar with cite book.
I'll spare you guys all the details of book publication information. If you're interested, please drop by my talk page. These are just some brief pointers based on the biggest issues I've seen with this specific article.
First, when citing a book, use the Template:Cite_book. Dont use Template:Cite_web. Thats for web sites!
Amazon publishes only a very small percentage of the books for sale on Amazon. So, about 99.99999% of the time you need to identify a publisher for a citation, Amazon will not be the correct answer.
Let's say you're like me. You know a book has something relevant on the topic at hand. But, you don't want to get up to grab the book from your shelf or (horror of horrors) go to the library or book store (whatever the f*** those are anyway, amirite?). Use Google books to narrow down a quote, and to automatically generate a ref tag with the correct template for you!!!!1! Goto http://books.google.com/ and search for your book. Once youve got it you can search inside the book for your quote. Or, you can just combine the title, quote and author in regular google to send you straight to a page sample including the book. This will send you to a page that looks like this:
You can take that huge URL and use it to generate a complete reference. Goto this web page: http://reftag.appspot.com/ and dump the huge google URL in there. It automagically creates this(minus the ###'s I used so you can see it):
<###ref name="Wisniewski2009">{{###cite book|author=K.A. Wisniewski|title=The Comedy of Dave Chappelle: Critical Essays|url=http://books.google.com/books?id=JWqnueNtCT8C&pg=PA140%7Cdate=2 July 2009|publisher=McFarland|isbn=978-0-7864-5427-3|pages=140–}}</ref>
Which looks like this:

Other Notes on Sources
Websites for retailers reselling a product mentioned in a biography is not a reliable source. A youtube account playing a pirated copy of a film mentioned in a biography is not a source. Blogs are almost never reliable sources. If a blog can't afford to buy its own domain name (and still has a .blogspot.com hanging off the end of it), its not going to be a reliable source. If the New Yorker reprints its contents, it *might* be a reliable source. Only create one reference for a single source; then reproduce it wherever its needed elsewhere in the article. Check out Template:Ref_Name to find out how that works. If you have two pages on the same website that list the same information, create a reference for one of them and ignore the other one (Im talking about where we have created two separate references for www.website.com/stuff and www.website.com/stuff/repeated - where both contain identical content). Im deleting all of the citations that these rules of thumb describe. Jay Dubya (talk) 19:07, 27 March 2014 (UTC)

CopernicusAD please point out where exactly the NPOV, essay-like, and bias issues are in this article. I've read it through and I don't see why those tags were added. AdA&D 22:08, 4 January 2018 (UTC)
- Jumping in b/c I was going to ask why this article hadn't been called into question for the issues you mentioned. The two most glaring examples I found were under Early Career ("In 1992, he won critical and popular acclaim for his television appearance in Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam on HBO. It was his appearance on this show that allowed his popularity to truly begin rising, eventually allowing him to become a regular guest on late-night television shows such as Politically Incorrect, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Howard Stern Show, and Late Night With Conan O'Brien.") and Season 3 problems ("Chappelle stunned fans and the entertainment industry when he abruptly left during production and took a trip to South Africa."). The words in bold may be truthful at their core, but they convey an emotional/subjective frame of mind rather than a simple listing of events. To put it another way, it reads like a press release instead of a research report. There are other instances but not as obvious as these.
- The above passages are also problematic b/c they lack citations or the cited source is an author whose job is to write entertaining pieces that'll "wow" the reader. But that's a different thread.
- I write cold, factual reports for a living & will take a stab at neutralizing this article at some point. LemonPokeCake (talk) 09:18, 12 December 2019 (UTC)
What is a “personal comedy vault”?
From the article: The first two specials were released on Netflix on March 21, 2017, and hail directly from Chappelle's personal comedy vault.
It reads like Chappelle has a physical storage unit called a “comedy vault” into which he personally places objects (show footage? notes? drafts and concepts?) related to his comedy performances.
It sounds like the person who wrote that took a marketing term or part of a promotional blurb (“directly from his personal comedy vault to your living room!”) and imbued it with the physical qualities of an actually existing object. Awkward paraphrasing maybe, or...?

Birthday date/time accurate?
Was Dave Chappelle actually born at 8:46 AM? I know he said so in his YouTube special "8:46," but it seems unlikely to me. We know that Derek Chauvin kneeled on George Floyd's neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, and the title of the video is "8:46." It seems to me Chappelle's claim that he was born at 8:46 AM is an artistic device to further the theme that "We Are All George Floyd."
It's also worth noting that almost immediately after he tells the audience he was born at 8:46 AM, he tells the audience that comedians regularly lie to audiences. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 12.34.46.210 (talk) 14:37, 17 June 2020 (UTC)

Controversy regarding "The Closer"
I think there should be more content about the controversy regarding "The Closer", such as the writer and showrunner of Dear White People (TV series) boycotting Netflix because of it [10] or the critique on him from the executive director of the National Black Justice Coalition for depicting the LGBTQI+ community and the black community as mutually exclusive [11].
This is a very controversial and hot topic with much misinformation about, so I think it's important Wikipedia reflects this by summarizing the criticism from trusted sources.
I'd add this content myself, but the article is semi-protected and I haven't worked enough on the English Wikipedia before.

Frankly, it seems biased and hagiographic to not include any discussion of the controversies surrounding this artist’s recent Netflix specials. This can certainly be done in a fair and unbiased way. There are now multiple news sources reporting on this. Most articles with polarizing figures feature sections on the various controversies they generate. Dear CaffeinAddict, how is this reverted edit undue? This is a developing story about the renaming of an auditorium in his high school. - Dear CaffeinAddict, your edit replaces the notable critical portions of the story - being called childish, saying he's better than everyone there, being criticized for using the n-word in front of children, the headline stuff - with WP:PUFFERY such as that Chappelle giving out free movie tickets and Turkey dinners to students and him asking people to donate to the school anyway is the opposite of WP:NPOV. If anything is WP:NOTNEWS it's that. You claim to want to discuss it and to not want an edit war, but you just continue editing your way see WP:OWNBEHAVIOR regardless of WP:DISCUSSCONSENSUS or any other policy. This most recent edit seems to be a manual re-reversion of Formal Dude's reversion of your edit. Replacing critical content with hagiography in the name of "NPOV" is not valid or informative explanation per WP:REVEXP. See also WP:PUBLICFIGURE: "If an allegation or incident is noteworthy, relevant, and well documented, it belongs in the article—even if it is negative and the subject dislikes all mention of it." -Kire1975 (talk) 01:12, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Woah pump the brakes there $10 Words. You've contradicted yourself here. If wikipedia is not news, then we should not be putting in "the headline stuff" to use your words. This is an encyclopedic entry about Dave Chappelle. We are to present what happened. Here is what happened: 1) The school was going to name an auditorium after him 2) He released a special which caused public controversy 3) The renaming ceremony was postponed 4) Chappelle reached out to the school and hosted an unannounced assembly 5) Reportedly eight students had dissenting comments to him. This is also in the context of a public forum which was not allowed to be recorded. What "headlines" want to pick up on is not encyclopedic. Nor is this incident yet a major event in his career. Therefore there should not be too much undue weight onto one issue. CaffeinAddict (talk) 04:05, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Having a paragraph about how he gave out free Turkey dinners and entertained dissenting questions like a magnanimous gentleman is WP:PUFFERY and WP:NOTNEWS. Is hagiography the "$10 word" you are confused about or is it something else? It has already been used once in a discussion you participated in above. The material you deleted was noteworthy, relevant, well documented and useful. You said you want to discuss it, but you don't say more than one word to the user whose material you deleted until you can claim gotcha because I used a word you don't understand. You have yet to explain why one mention of it on wikipedia is undue. You say you don't want an edit war, but when FormalDude reverted your deletion you manually re-reverted that with no valid explanation. It is not one issue. It is not breaking news. It is not even a BLP violation. It is one part of an ongoing event. It belongs on Wikipedia. Kire1975 (talk) 05:20, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- No bud - I'm aware of what it means. You're coming off as rather aggressive - considering you have previous topic bans for similar aggressions on wikipedia [13] I'm not surprised. CaffeinAddict (talk) 05:45, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
Kire1975 what wikipedia writing are you going to link to this time. I'll wait. CaffeinAddict (talk) 05:52, 29 November 2021 (UTC)- You're the one who broke the three revert rule today. I'm done. Kire1975 (talk) 05:53, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
You're a highly disruptive editor. CaffeinAddict (talk) 05:55, 29 November 2021 (UTC)- The entire two sentences lack context. You want to put negative commentary in... I just want it to have context or it's not worth mentioning at all. CaffeinAddict (talk) 05:59, 29 November 2021 (UTC)
- Kire1975 You don't actually seem to be interested in improving the page but rather being right. I'll just flag some other editors to actually generate discussion. CaffeinAddict (talk) 06:05, 29 November 2021 (UTC)

- Why has the recent controversy been moved to a "Philantropy" subsection of his "Personal life"? It's not related to either topics. It would be better if the entire second paragraph was removed from this section back to where it was, or maybe to a new section called "Controversies". Isabelle 🔔 13:12, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Mulaney show
@CaffeinAddict:, I think the write up I have tried to add is well sourced and not overly long or WP:UNDUE. It seems like it is totally within policy to include. This conversation is related to Talk:John_Mulaney#Chappelle_incident, for context to others. Below is my proposed addition.
After the Hollywood Bowl incident, Chappelle made a surprise appearance opening for John Mulaney in Columbus, Ohio, where he received backlash from some attendees for reportedly using the set to tell transphobic and homophobic jokes.[1][2]

Change for neutrality:
In The Closer, Chappelle [drew criticism for ] jokes [which were viewed as denigrating] queer and transgender people, particularly trans women.[113][114][115] 209.171.85.246 (talk) 10:13, 25 July 2022 (UTC)
- Not done for now: "which were viewed as denigrating" is not necessarily more neutral in the sense of WP:NPOV. It introduces doubt, and is only appropriate when there is not a consensus on the description--- neutrality means reflecting reliable sources, not avoiding ever taking a stance. 2 out of 3 provided sources explicitly describe the Closer as derogatory. Therefore, this change warrants further discussion. Of the universe (talk) 15:37, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
- If an in text attribution is appropriate, then I would support a rewrite like "The Closer drew criticism from viewers and from LBGTQ advocacy groups for jokes that targeted queer and transgender people, particularly trans women." Of the universe (talk) 15:42, 2 August 2022 (UTC)
