Move proposal
[edit]I propose Cylinder (geometry) is the primary topic. If others agree, then it seems appropriate to follow convention and it should be moved to Cylinder, this DAB page being moved to Cylinder (disambiguation) and the primary topic listed according to WP:MOSDAB (ie even more so than I have done as of now). - Support: its one of the basic geometric forms, and the namesake/root topic of all the other articles on cylinders.Morgan Riley (talk) 15:39, 13 March 2014 (UTC)
- Oppose – the term is ambiguous enough that the current disambiguation arrangement seems best. And see WP:RM if you want to open a proper requested move discussion; without advertising this in the standard way, this discussion will get about one remark every other year at best. The result of the move request was: pages moved as there was a clear consensus for a primary topic. (non-admin closure) GeoffreyT2000 (talk, contribs) 17:27, 17 December 2016 (UTC)
– There's a clear primary topic. This move was proposed five years ago and supported, but never executed. -- Fyrael (talk) 06:17, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:48, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Comment I added moving Cylinder (geometry) to Cylinder into this discussion. Steel1943 (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- I object to such a primarytopic grab. No RM discussion was opened. Dicklyon (talk) 06:34, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- @Fyrael and Dicklyon: queried move request Anthony Appleyard (talk) 08:48, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose I suspect car fans and mathematicians will have different ideas on what is absolute topic. Best left as a dab to catch mis-links by bot. In ictu oculi (talk) 09:40, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- And scuba divers will have a third idea as to primary meaning. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 12:23, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- "Absolute topic" is pretty far from what we're talking about here. That would imply that there's only one meaning. We're talking about a primary topic, which just means that one topic is far more commonly used and sought after by our readers than the other topics. And I think that if a car enthusiast or scuba diver searched for "cylinder" and arrived directly at the article for the shape, their level of surprise would be very near zero. On the other hand, I think that if you asked most readers exactly what a car cylinder or scuba cylinder was, they'd have no idea. -- Fyrael (talk) 02:48, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- And scuba divers will have a third idea as to primary meaning. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 12:23, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support The primary topic for "cylinder" is Cylinder. I can't see how this could possibly be disputed. --MrStoofer (talk) 11:07, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- And of course Cylinder (geometry) would be moved to Cylinder. --MrStoofer (talk) 11:10, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support if and only if Cylinder (geometry) is chosen as primary topic. —David Eppstein (talk) 17:00, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Support Cylinder (geometry) being moved to Cylinder. — Gorthian (talk) 18:29, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Comment: At this point, I bundled Cylinder (geometry) into this discussion since moving that page in addition to moving Cylinder seemed to clearly be the nominator's intent, as even proven by the comments thus far. Steel1943 (talk) 21:37, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
- Oppose officially now that an RM discussion has been opened. This is a pointless primarytopic grab; the disambiguation page is best where it is. Dicklyon (talk) 04:07, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- Could you be bothered to explain how a primary topic discussion is "pointless"? -- Fyrael (talk) 05:38, 10 December 2016 (UTC)
- Not the discussion, but the "grab". What is the point of trying to grab primarytopic status for one topic when the term is so ambiguous and already well disambiguated as standard? Dicklyon (talk) 18:03, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
- I'm not sure why you're being uncivil. There's no "grab". This is a normal move request and as you can see there are a number of people that agree with the move, so I'm not doing anything crazy here. The point to it is obvious. It's the same point as any other primary topic: to save users the trouble of going through a DAB page when what they're looking for is most likely Cylinder (geometry). -- Fyrael (talk) 20:47, 14 December 2016 (UTC)
