Super Cyclonic Storm
[edit]It looks the stats show a super cyclonic storm with Phailin. There is also data From NOAA that indicates it maybe the most intense cyclone recorded in the Northern Indian Ocean. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Playerstroke (talk • contribs) 17:45, 11 October 2013 (UTC)
- A super cyclonic storm is a category used by the India Meteorological Department to rate systems they think are over 120 kts and it looks like from various news sources that they wont be calling it one and peaking at around 110/115 kts. As for rating the strongest tropical cyclone in the basin that again falls down to the IMD, who are currently thinking that the pressure of the system is around 940 hPa.Jason Rees (talk) 18:37, 11 October 2013 (UTC)

Misinformation
[edit]This sentence is wrong:
- "The IMD reported that the system had intensified into a cyclonic storm and named it Phailin."
The cyclone was named by Thailand, not India. The names have been pre-determined since 2010. [Source](http://www.wmo.int/pages/prog/www/tcp/Storm-naming.html) 174.117.147.193 (talk) 23:02, 14 October 2013 (UTC)
- It isnt wrong you and the Media just misunderstanding how the naming system in the NIO and WPAC works. Each of the WMO Panel Countries submitted a list of names to the WMO several years ago (Between 1997 - 2004). After various reviews these names were accepted and the responsibility to name a system when it intensifies into a cyclonic storm was given to the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centres, which in this case is the IMD.Jason Rees (talk) 02:36, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Also from your source it says at the bottom of the list "The RSMC tropical cyclones New Delhi will give a tropical cyclone an identification name from the above name list."Jason Rees (talk) 13:04, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Death toll stable yet?
[edit]Who has the best estimates of what the death toll will be in a year? (Ref.: [1]) EllenCT (talk) 02:26, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- In a year, it should be pretty settled. Right now, we go by what the media is reporting. Since their totals are contradictory, we might not have what's necessarily correct, so generally we go with the highest and/or most recent accurate total. --♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- What are the highest and lowest estimates from the death tolls you consider reliable at present? EllenCT (talk) 03:08, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- Personally i like Jeff's 22 - 36, but as more research is done we will see what happens with the death toll.Jason Rees (talk) 13:57, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

Nepal
[edit]I made a tweak to the intro yesterday as it was reading as if Nepal were a state of India. Do we know the impact there yet as it doesn't seem to appear in the article at all? I'd assume they got a bit of rain and not much more given how far inland, but would be nice to have something more concrete in the article. - Cheers, JCJ of Burwell (Talk) 09:28, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- As per This Article not much effect is there in Nepal except rains. I think Nepal should be removed from the countries affected by Phailin ScitDeitalk 11:02, 15 October 2013 (UTC)
- I think it maybe better in the long run if we combined Nepal, Bangladesh and the Malay peninsular countries together in to an other countries section. I also think we need to see which Indian states are most worthy of a full section.Jason Rees (talk) 12:36, 15 October 2013 (UTC)

[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- The result of this discussion was Image 2.
Image 1 | Image 2 |
---|---|
- I was going to change the image to Image 2 since the image was closer to peak intensity according to the article (which was in the late hours of October 11), however, there might be a hidden reason why Image 1 is better than Image 2 and might be a controversial edit. Which image should be used? 📖 (💬/📜) 11:46, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Speaking as a non-TC image expert, I personally think that image 1 looks better, however, I would defer to other editor's judgement.Jason Rees (talk) 13:37, 6 June 2023 (UTC)
- Well per WP:WPTC/IMG, the most image closest to the peak should be used in the infobox, which would be Image 2. It also says that most iconic image closest to peak intensity should be used. However, looking at various websites, the images used are nowhere near peak intensity (like 1 or 2 days before) or at landfall. So while image 1 may look better, image 2 should be used.
