Open Beta

They never said it would be open to everyone. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.103.7.106 (talk) 17:18, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Actually the provided source does say that. Faliszek is quoted as saying by the end of the beta "everyone will be playing" and then they'll release it. ferret (talk) 18:15, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

[edit] you are right he does say that directly in the video it will be open eventually. but he is saying its starting at 10k then expanding to waves like they are doing with dota 2 then eventually to everyone as in a open beta. can you please reword it — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.103.7.106 (talk) 19:39, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

It already says that, and does not need to be reworded. Please reread: The beta will initially be restricted to around ten thousand people who received a key at events Valve attended to showcase Global Offensive. After issues such as client and server stability are addressed the beta will open up to progressively more and more people, until the beta becomes open for anybody to join and play. ferret (talk) 19:56, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

that is not what he says at all. actually listen to the interview — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.103.7.106 (talk) 21:48, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm not sure I follow you, as you're making contradicting posts. Above you asked that I make it say "Starts at 10k, then expands, until eventually everyone has it." That's exactly what the article already says, and now you saying that's not what you want it to state. What do you want it to say instead? ferret (talk) 21:54, 8 December 2011 (UTC)

Do you guys think we should add a section regarding play modes? I know the beta is limited but there is information regarding new/current game modes Ltezl (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:59, 29 February 2012 (UTC).

I think there's already mention of some of the modes like built in DM and GG. If you can find a reliable source with more details though, certainly add it in. -- ferret (talk) 12:36, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

What is wrong with what's currently there Kitchy88?

What you want to put in is game guide and is against wikipedia's guidelines. But if anything is factually wrong with what's currently there it should be fixed. To my knowledge as a long time CS player it's correct and it's nearly all sourced. What you added deletes tons of information and only adds information about game modes. Skeith (talk) 22:48, 12 June 2012 (UTC)

I am also a long time player of cs and currently have the beta cs:go. "For example, in demolition maps, often abbreviated "de", the terrorist team is given an explosive to plant at a designated location. The Counter-Terrorists must defend the location until time runs out and if the bomb is planted, defuse it. Global Offensive is planned to launch with demolition, hostage rescue,[6] and a new game mode called "Arsenal". Arsenal is based on a popular mod for both Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike: Source called "Gun Game", and made in collaboration with the creators of the mod."

Not correct, the game modes are not called arsenal, they are in fact called Demolition and Arms Race. < neither of which are mentioned prior. Demolition also is portrayed by the last editor as being about planting the bomb, which is only slightly true. It is a mode of Arms Race (gungame) that allows you to also plant.

"Global Offensive, like previous installments, operates in short rounds that end when all players on one side are dead or an objective is completed. Once a player dies they must wait until the round ends to respawn in most game modes. Players purchase weapons and equipment with money awarded based on their performance. Completing objectives or killing enemies earns the player money while negative actions, like killing a teammate, takes money away from the player."

Doesn't mention that the 2 different 'competitive' modes have varying ways of giving money to players for certain things. The auto assignment of defuse kits and such.

"Global Offensive adds new weapons and equipment not seen in previous installments, most notably the Molotov cocktail which temporarily covers a small area in fire, making it impossible to pass through without taking significant damage."

How is this the most notable change when there is about 8 new weapons and equipment, like a tazer for example? Completely irrelevant. Kitchy88 (talk) 17:10, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

I see
-The information about Arsenal seems to be outdated. As the source says Valve originally announced the gungame based modes as "Arsenal: Arms Race" and "Arsenal: Demolition.". Since then they've dropped the Arsenal part.
-I think I wrote the bit on demolition, and typing demolition was a mistake on my part. It survived because I was talking about regular old bomb defusal and the modes are similar.
-The difference between (classic) competitive and casual are very minor. Looking at other Featured video game articles game modes are described as concisely as possible. It could do with a rewrite since the game modes in GO are slightly confusing. Since classic mode encompasses bomb defusal and hostage rescue, further split into casual and competitive modes. Then you have the Arsenal game modes, if Valve is still calling them that, which consist of demolition and arms race.
-Well the molotov is the most talked about, but that's my perspective. They added many new things in GO but the tazer, decoy and molotov are the only significantly different additions. Even for people playing the game the fact they dropped the MP5 and it's apparent replacement is the MP9 is mostly irrelevant. While those three are totally new to CS and have no analog.

Skeith (talk) 18:33, 16 June 2012 (UTC)

Ok, so can I put back the information I had previously (while maintaining the molotov part and the minor edits by the recent users in spelling and such)?

And there is no mention of Arsenal at all in the game itself.

The main differences in Casual and Competitive are the increased cash with competitive and in casual you are auto assigned a defuse kit.. essentially a noob friendly 'nilla' mode.

Am I able to change it now without being reverted? Kitchy88 (talk) 13:05, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

It was reverted because it wasn't written in an encyclopedic manner or sourced. Refer to featured video game articles like Halo 3 or Call of Duty 4 for how to best write game mode sections.Skeith (talk) 19:20, 17 June 2012 (UTC)

Making a criticism section?

The competitive community for both 1.6 and Source hasn't run out of bad things to say about GO, but I was wondering if it was worth adding. I'm leaning against as Valve has stated that there's tons of WIP content in GO (being a beta), many things that are half finished that they threw in to get feedback while they finish up. But it has gotten some amount of coverage on gaming sites, and Valve responds directly criticism occasionally.Skeith (talk) 01:15, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

User reviews are not a reliable source. An RS will have to review the game before we can have a Reception section, and that won't happen till around release. And it should be a reception section. Criticism sections have mostly been removed from Wikipedia, criticism is a part of a balanced reception section. -- ferret (talk) 01:20, 19 June 2012 (UTC)

Clarify about distribution?

It says the distribution is download, but is that only it? Is it impossible to buy it as a physical copy? For PC, I mean. Because I know it's been possible for previous CS games. --PWNGWN (talk) 14:47, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

Yep, it was only released via Steam, PSN, and the Xbox Live store (whatever they call it). It was only $15 on release so I imagine that was part of why they decided not to sell retail copies. That and it's multi-player only anyway, so anyone buying the game would have an internet connection. Nicereddy (talk) 05:08, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Steam Workshop

Could we add something about the steam workshop? --RetΔrtist (разговор) 10:54, 3 February 2015 (UTC)

Post-release stuff

I suggest that we should just rewrite the entire post-release section into a brief section where we talk a bit about Steam Workshop support, the cosmetic weapon finishes, some new weapons and support for user made maps instead of having a giant block of information that talks about every single update. UPDATE: I did some rewrite. However, I am pretty bad at doing this kind of stuff, and I think we might have to do some source double checking. Wuzh (talk) 06:57, 7 May 2015 (UTC)

Can we find a better screenshot?

The current death cam screenshot is a bit... weak and not very informative. The death cam is a beta death cam anyways and might be outdated. I'm looking for more of an in-game screenshot, with the first-person view and things. Wuzh (talk) 00:27, 8 May 2015 (UTC)

I agree, although the current screenshot was taken on an up-to-date client(by me). What sort of image do you have in mind? I can capture it, but I think it would be optimal to reach a consensus on what is actually pictured. How about a Terrorist with an AK47 on de_dust2? EvilMossman (talk) 19:09, 17 May 2015 (UTC)
I'm thinking about something along the lines of a first-person view on Dust2. Maybe even with a weapon finish. Wuzh (talk) 11:06, 26 May 2015 (UTC)
Something similar to this image, except on the more iconic Dust2 and with a weapon finish, "illustrating the graphic style and HUD elements of the game".Wuzh (talk) 11:09, 26 May 2015 (UTC)

The mentioning of the Crown Melbourne Invitational should be moved(or removed completely) from the "Majors" section under "Tournaments" as it wasn't a major(going by the definition mentioned earlier in the article).

Split out Skins gambling stuff?

I think this could be an article in its own right, given how significant of a controversy this has become over the past few weeks. ViperSnake151  Talk  20:25, 13 July 2016 (UTC)

Given this article's present size, I don't think breaking it out as its own standalone topic is appropriate. But, if there was a larger topic on gambling within video games, then it would make sense to move that to this other article. (I just did a causal search and didn't see anything). But it might also be worthwhile to wait to see if either suit has legs going forward, as if either does, I can easily see this as standalone. --MASEM (t) 20:41, 13 July 2016 (UTC)
As a followup, if either current suit has legs, then I would agree that a separate article may be valid. But it might take a few months for that to happen. --MASEM (t) 14:24, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

On the skins situation

While this [1] is now in the news, because it is an accusation against a BLP where it has yet to be affirmed by any source (in constrast with the self-statements of those already listed here), I do not think we should include this yet until it is been shown true or admitted to. --MASEM (t) 14:24, 18 July 2016 (UTC)

CS:GO Beginners

Throughout the article on Counter Strike: Global Offensive there are many things that work and some things that don't work. For instance, describing the gameplay and how the game works is efficient for people who are clueless about the game. This helps beginners understand generally what the game is about. In addition, there is a part of the article that introduces the Competitive Scene of CS:GO. This is perfect for the article to show people that the game is also an E-Sport(Electronic Sport). What doesn't really work in the article would be talking about the gambling and third-party betting that happened with the game. This will lead people away thinking that game is a bad influence to teens and players. Overall this article is really great! I suggest emphasizing more on the game's operations that are exclusive features within the game seasonally. This should attract more of the target market that the game is trying to catch by giving interest in what the game also includes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 104.32.59.234 (talk) 08:15, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

I'm not sure I 100% follow what you're asking for, except you seem to believe this article should be promotional. Wikipedia's goal is not to promote the game, attract any sort of particular audience, help its target market, etc. The article talks about negative aspects of the game because they are verifiable facts. We are not an advertisement. -- ferret (talk) 12:18, 7 October 2016 (UTC)

CS:GO redirect: What to do about the Czech Wikipedia

CS:GO would normally redirect here, except that cs: is an interwiki prefix for Czech, and there is actually a disambiguation page there (which currently does not mention Counter-Strike: Global Offensive at all). Use of CS:GO in the article

Shouldn't we be avoiding the constant use of CS:GO in the article and be using "Global Offensive" as the short-hand term for the game, per WP:VG/STYLE? A similar discussion also happened with Team Fortress 2, with the consensus going towards not using TF2 outside of the lead. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 20:11, 30 May 2017 (UTC)

VG/STYLE doesn't caution against that - only about introducing frivolous abbreviations in the lede. "CS:GO" is readily used in sources, so we're past that point, so the question becomes if "CS:GO", "Counter-Strike", or "Global Offensive" is a better way to discuss it, and given those choices, I see nothing wrong with "CS:GO" given how frequently that's used outside WP. Please do not add blurry images of promotional mice, keyboards and other computer peripherals.

I deleted the image of the SteelSeries mouse because: 1) It is not of encyclopedic quality, being dark blurry and faint. 2) It does not add any information essential to the reader's understanding of the topic. One does not need to see a picture of a mouse or keyboard in order to understand what CS:GO is.

This position is backed by Wikipedia's Manual of Style:

Pertinence and encyclopedic nature

"Images must be significant and relevant in the topic's context, not primarily decorative. They are often an important illustrative aid to understanding. xxx

"Poor-quality images‍—‌dark or blurry; showing the subject too small, hidden in clutter, or ambiguous; and so on‍—‌should not be used. Think carefully about which images best illustrate the subject matter." — Preceding unsigned comment added by Riverarvi (talkcontribs) 13:31, 5 November 2017 (UTC)

@Riverarvi: Hi. I appreciate the comments but I must disagree. The image is useful as it shows the ways that real life peripherals have been modified to coincide with the popularity of CSGO. There was a discussion (and in turn consensus) to add this image, which you can read here. Per WP:BRD, you were bold and reverted and now we discuss it while leaving it the way it was before the original bold action. For this reason, I've readded the image.
must be significant and relevant in the topic's context, not primarily decorative. It is contextually related as it's about the promotional peripherals.
an important illustrative aid to understanding See above; it gives an understanding of what the article means by Companies such as SteelSeries have partnered with Valve to promote real life peripherals, including headsets, mice and mouse pads.
dark or blurry; showing the subject too small, hidden in clutter, or ambiguous IMO it isn't blurry, hidden, too small, or ambiguous. It's a photograph of a mouse with special colouring on it; a bit of blur doesn't matter.

Should the game modes in the Gameplay section be formatted in bullet points?

Here is a concept. There are notes (and soon a draft for a strategy section), so please take a look. Thank you! Epicandrew1220 (talk) 22:16, 26 November 2017 (UTC)

Been working on Strategies on and off, let me know if this is sufficient to put in the article. I don't want to put in too much information per WP:NOTGUIDE, but didn't want to have nothing. Also, I could only find one somewhat reasonable source. If you find anything or have anything you want to add, let me know. Epicandrew1220 (talk) 16:13, 12 December 2017 (UTC)
I think having the whole section be prose rather than dot points makes it flow better. All of strategy (besides one bit) is unsourced. With that said, the one source you do use could be useful in the future. A paragraph under the third (Matchmaking is supported for all online game modes and is managed through the Steam software) could be added that discusses the different strategies,. the necessity of teamwork, and so on and so forth. Anarchyte (work | talk) 10:04, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
I found a source that covers boosting (and I guess triple boosting) pretty well. If you could find something on run boosting and/or something on tactical smokes and flashes, that would be nice. Edit: do I need a source for run boosting (because it isn't really covered well)? Epicandrew1220 (talk) 14:12, 13 December 2017 (UTC)
Yes. Everything needs to be sourced. Anarchyte (work | talk) 08:21, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
Alright, implementing the finished draft with all the sourced material soon. Feel free to edit, reword, or remove any content. Epicandrew1220 (talk) 15:42, 14 December 2017 (UTC)
I've rearranged it to where I think strategy information would fit best. I only kept the content on taking sites because boosting isn't important to the average reader. It was also sourced to PCGamesN, who's reliability is muddled (see above and in WT:VG/RS archives). Anarchyte (work | talk) 00:12, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
Alright, thanks! Do we cross that off the list now (for to-do, or should we further expand before we cross it off the list)? Epicandrew1220 (talk) 02:04, 15 December 2017 (UTC)
I think there's a lot more to be said about strategy (but that's OR, of course). There's probably more information somewhere, such as in these two articles by PCGamer: [2] [3]. We could expand that paragraph to have more info on eco rounds, pushing, smokes, teamwork, etc. Anarchyte (work | talk) 07:10, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Virtual Economy

I think it would be very important to include a section on the virtual economy in Global Offensive. The story of somebody buying a Dragon Lore for more than $61000 USD has made big news. Aside from this, it's a very important subject, covering the topics of skin gambling, trading, purchasing items, valve case odds, etc. I'll begin to write up a draft and come back once I think it's ready. See skin gambling. Exact amounts aren't needed here, though outlandish examples give in media can be mentioned. --Masem (t) 15:32, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
Oh, thanks for that. Zoom (talk page) 15:51, 12 February 2018 (UTC)
