Do we have proof Nero poisoned Britannicus, as is asserted by this article? The article on Nero says he died mysteriously and cites Suetornius, one hostile to Nero, as a propenent of the conjecture he did. I think if the assertion remain, there should be an appropriate reference beside it, or it should be made clear it is an opinion. Rintrah 10:29, 2 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If we had all of Tacitus' writings, this would probably be easily established; however, the elimination of the former Princeps' family in establishing his own dynasty is a natural outcome, given Nero's character and the thugs that surrounded his court.-HammerFilmFan — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.111.18.139 (talk) 08:30, 8 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

In a similar vein, what is the source on Octavia's death, and what do modern scholars say? "Terror" would of course make her bleed to death faster because of the rush of adrenaline, and I'm not sure about this "suffocating in a hot vapor bath" business. --76.189.211.27 (talk) 01:18, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! I'll be reviewing this article, could take up to a week. --Cerebellum (talk) 09:17, 18 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Prose: No issues.
  • Coverage: No issues, you do cover a lot about Nero’s reign and rise to power but I think that info is inseparable from Octavia's story.
  • Stable: Yes.
  • Neutral: Yes, you balance out the ancient sources with more measured modern opinions. You could add a sentence saying that the ancient sources are biased, but I think that point comes across on its own from what you've written.
  • one that Agrippina had attempted to use as leverage in power struggles with her son. This is jarring because up until now we have been reading about Agrippina's schemes on behalf of Nero. I would add another sentence, something like, Nero's relationship with his mother deteriorated after he became emperor and the two became adversaries.
  • Images: Article is well illustrated, and images are appropriately tagged. No non-free images.
  • References: Referencing is meticulous and sources are of high quality. Good mix of modern scholarly sources and ancient sources. Only issues are with the "in fiction" section.
  • Referencing is weak for the third paragraph of "in fiction". I know it is difficult to find sources for this kind of thing, maybe cite reviews of Claudius the God and the German novel?
  • In Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater's musical... The Vassar press release is not a great source, and it doesn't support the statement "She was played as a frightened, unwilling bride." Unless this musical has gotten some other coverage, I would remove the whole paragraph. --Cerebellum (talk) 11:18, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Egsan Bacon: Review complete, there are only a couple issues. Please take a look at my comments and let me know what you think. --Cerebellum (talk) 11:20, 21 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cerebellum: Thank you for the review, I appreciate you taking the time to review the article as well as your suggestions.

  • Added sentence establishing the conflict between Nero and Agrippina prior to the paragraph on Britannicus' death
  • Added references for Claudius the God and the German novel
  • Cut the paragraph on the Shiek/Sater musical

Please let me know if you think the changes are sufficient to address the issues you found. Egsan Bacon (talk) 04:25, 23 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • ... that Nero's divorce of Claudia Octavia caused public outcry – so he had her executed instead?
