Orphaned references in Bebe Rexha

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Bebe Rexha's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

American–Albanian, American–Macedonian or American?

The following discussion is an archived record of a request for comment. Please do not modify it. No further edits should be made to this discussion. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The consensus is simply American. The consensus is true consensus and I only formally close this because it is listed at WP:ANRFC. AlbinoFerret 23:16, 20 November 2015 (UTC)

Should the lead sentence of the article read that Bebe Rexha is American–Albanian, American–Macedonian or just American? Bebe was born in Brooklyn, NY to ethnic Albanian parents from Debar, FYR Macedonia and has both American and Macedonian citizenship. Lucky102 (talk) 16:08, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

American, similarly to the Rita Ora page, who is British of Albanian decent. Her ethnicity can be further discussed in the early life section. Karst (talk) 18:41, 3 October 2015 (UTC)
American is probably best in this instance. The dual citizenship does complicate matters a little, but given that her notability arises entirely from her work in the American music industry and that we do not have a single source which speaks to the degree of her connection to Macedonia (if any exists beyond her citizenship), it's potentially misrepresentative to ascribe a Macedonian identity to her in the lead. That being said, it's not a huge issue, and if even a single source speaking to self-identification with the ethnicity or significant time spent in Macedonia emerges, "American–Macedonian" would become my default recommendation. Snow let's rap 02:02, 4 October 2015 (UTC)
American - Plain and simple. It should read American if she was born in American and grew up in the States. Comatmebro User talk:Comatmebro 15:41, 7 October 2015 (UTC)
American: It's the simplest, most accurate description. Otherwise, we'd have to choose between American-Albanian and American-Macedonian, or even American-Albanian-Macedonian, and that's just too cumbersome. Further details about ethnicity can be dealt with in the body of the article, but they need not all be incorporated into the first sentence. Safehaven86 (talk) 00:40, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
American - No need to make a decision tougher than it needs to be by deciding between American–Albanian and American–Macedonian. She was born in America, so she is American. Meatsgains (talk) 00:14, 17 October 2015 (UTC)
  • American is simplest, though I don't think it matters all that much. If desired, the lead could mention that she's of Albanian and Macedonian heritage, but I don't see why that would be necessary. It's often better to leave that sort of detail to an "early life" or "personal life" section. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 00:09, 21 October 2015 (UTC)

Parents origin

To clarify. While her parents are ethnically Albanian, the sources are quite specific that they were from Macedonia. See here for instance. She is quite clear there. The mention of Dibër, Albania is vague (it is a county). It would be interesting to know more about the story of her parents. Especially how they came to America and under what circumstances. Last name pronunciation

In Albanian language, the "xh" dipthong is pronounced as a /dʒ/ in IPA, just like "Rio de Janeiro". An example of this would be Enver Hoxha. Could someone add this alongside the English pronunciation description in the introduction paragraph? Thanks. --Bankster (talk) 01:15, 21 May 2018 (UTC)

New head Picture

Infobox image

Vistadan, I just saw your edit here and wanted to clarify that the image you replaced isn't actually a portrait, I just named it that way accidentally while uploading it. Its a real, more recent picture and I personally think its more flattering than the replacement currently in the article. In the one currently used she has a puffy face and a hairstyle thats outdated compared to her current one. What are your thoughts on changing it back? Regards.--NØ 19:21, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

MaranoFan, I only changed the image to the current one because the previous one looks like shes in mid sneeze. I personally think this photo look clearer than the previous and I think she look fine in the photo. I think we should leave it for discuss with more people to see what they think? Vistadan 20:42, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Agreed. Thought you got the impression it was an actual portrait from your edit summary. Anyway, the current picture is fine and recent too so we'll wait for other people to weigh in if anyone wants it changed. Thanks for your time--NØ 20:45, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
I've reverted back to the Red image - I can't say why the 2018 is bad as it would fall under BLP but for various reasons it just doesn't look right, The red image image obviously doesn't look great but I would say it's considerably better than the other one. –Davey2010Talk 20:56, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
I agree with you Davey2010 since you brought up that it would fall under BLP. What about using this photo from 2016, it's clear and much better then the current red image. What do you think? Vistadan 21:04, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Hi Vistadan, I think that image was used here before, Not sure but I'd support that as a replacement,
No no this image doesn't fall under my BLP - My comments on why it looks bad would fall under BLP, Anyway Support this replacement, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 21:08, 11 December 2018 (UTC)
Oh, I understand what you mean now. The photo I recommend is used on most of the other language articles for Bebe Rexha, so I think it will be fine to change now. Vistadan 21:20, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

The "portrait" image is terrible quality with a terrible expression. The cropped 2018 shot looks like Rexha doesn't really want to be there, which can be explained by the guy she's standing near in the uncropped version. The very best image of these is the 2016 Staples Center performance, when Rexha is in full performer mode, looking fabulous. Binksternet (talk) 05:57, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

I do not believe File:Bebe Rexha Portrait.png is useable for the infobox or even the article in general as it is extremely low quality. I see no issue with the File:Bebe Rexha 2018 (cropped).jpg being used though it is still not the best quality picture either. The faces in the background are somewhat distracting and the lighting seems strange to me. I see no issue with using File:Bebe Rexha live at Staples Center, Los Angeles 15 (cropped).jpg. I do not agree with the outdated argument as Rexha's image does not appear to have changed to the point where she would be unrecognized between 2016 and 2018. After joining the choir, she discovered that her voice was a coloratura soprano.

Labels associated with Bebe

While Bebe is currently signed with Warner Bros., why is DCD2 and Island Def Jam in the labels section of the musical infobox. Especially when DCD2 doesn't list Bebe Rexha as a signed artist nor is Island Def Jam currently active as they have been defuncted since 2014. Is there any clarification before I remove the two labels from the musical infobox? MunRis • †alk 10:01, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

Albanians mostly adhere to Islam. Can anyone find any source regarding Rexha's faith? Majunged (talk) 14:03, 16 August 2019 (UTC)

Multiple genres

Billiekhalidfan has been removing genres from the article to supply only "pop" in the genre field. The sources describe her as a singer in various genres, with pop as a foundation. Pop cannot be the only genre shown. Binksternet (talk) 04:55, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

No they don't. The article doesn't say anything about any of those genres. Billiekhalidfan (talk) 19:56, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Are you refusing to look at all the cited sources?
With all this emphasis in the sources on Rexha's genre fluidity and flexibility, it beggars the mind that someone might want to pigeonhole her as only "pop". Binksternet (talk) 22:31, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
Well where are these sources in the article? But the Apple Music source says she wrote songs in those genres, not her own music. Billiekhalidfan (talk) 22:45, 9 September 2019 (UTC)
If someone is a songwriter, then the songs they write are also part of their image, even if the songs are performed by others. GQ talks about her hip-hop image, and many sources talk about her hip-hop songwriting successes. Binksternet (talk) 23:17, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

Infobox image revisited

I'm starting a new section because the previous discussion seems to have been resolved. That discussion (whose latest post was in December 2018) doesn't mention the new image (File:Bebe Rexha 2019 by Glenn Francis.jpg) that was uploaded to Wikimedia in May 2019 and (I assume) put here soon thereafter.

Does anybody but me have a problem with this obviously (and heavily) Photoshopped image?

I had never heard of Bebe Rexha, but I came across her very intriguing name somewhere and came here to find out who she is. I was immediately startled by that photo, because it looks like a doll, not a human being. Her face and especially her eyes look like molded and polished plastic. It's the creepiest photo I've seen in a long, long time.

The longer and closer I looked at it the less human it looked, to the extent that I started worrying that the poor girl might have had some horrible surgery to make herself look like that—like the woman somewhere who has paid a fortune to have herself made over into Barbie. But I checked Google, and the hundreds of other photos of Rexha I found look nothing like this. In them she looks like a normal, healthy human being. So I checked this image's Wikimedia page, and discovered that, yes, this image has been Photoshopped—WAY too heavily, in my opinion. It was taken on March 14, then Photoshopped and uploaded to Wikimedia on May 17.

Aside from the fact that it makes her look so weird, is it all right to use Photoshopped images in Wikipedia biographies of living persons? I wouldn't think so, unless the fact that it WAS Photoshopped was clearly disclosed in the article, so that readers would know that the actual person doesn't look like the photograph. I think File:Bebe Rexha live at Staples Center, Los Angeles 15 (cropped).jpg would be MUCH better here than this photo. She looks like a real person, and it's a fascinating, beautiful, dynamic and crystal-clear look at her performing. It's a really great photo. —8.9.91.149 (talk) 18:04, 18 July 2019 (UTC)

I agree wholeheartedly. Binksternet (talk) 05:26, 9 September 2019 (UTC)

To the Drama Queen who had never heard of Bebe Rexha and who's life was destroyed after seeing her picture - good riddance to you! Bebe said she loves the 2019 iHeartRadio Awards photo and since it is of her, she is the one who's most qualified to know what the best picture is to use - not some delusional troll. Please DO NOT revert. Glenn Francis (talk) 14:21, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

@Toglenn and Binksternet: Let's all calm down a bit. I think the above discussion was in wp:goodfaith. The aesthetic qualities of images can definitely be subjective, and people may appreciate different things. Toglenn If you have any kind of reference material to indicate the artist liked this picture please provide it. It does seem like this is a picture you personally took as a professional photographer and this could run afoul of self wp:promotion rules. I enjoy both pictures so I'm not taking a side in the argument, but please keep it civil and provide sources where possible. Besnikur (talk) 15:20, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Rather than continue this absurd discussion, I deleted replaced the first photo with a different one. Cheers!Glenn Francis (talk) 16:16, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

It's still terrible, with a wa-a-a-ay overdone makeup job and a stilted pose creating a fake look. Better by far is the relaxed and human image seen in the Staples 2016 performance. It's not even close. Binksternet (talk) 23:30, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

@Binksternet – Your ‘judgment’ is seriously flawed. Her makeup is perfect and so is everything else about this photo. This photo and this look has been highly praised and well received by the media, and she loves it. It’s also on all 40 of the foreign language Wiki’s that have articles of her. If Bebe were to read what 'Drama Queen' said about her appearance she would have every right to !#$%^&*. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Toglenn (talkcontribs)

A performance shot of a singer singing is far better than a static and artificial fashion look for a singer. I would much rather see her performing than see her standing stiff like a blow-up doll or Barbie. Binksternet (talk) 02:47, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

@Binksternet -You are entitled to your opinion. However, the “PREFERRED photo composition by Wikipedia is a closeup Headshot/Portrait style photo with the subject looking into the lens of the camera, which is what mine is - NOT a body shot of the person staring off to the side with a microphone covering their mouth – that is one of the LEAST preferred compositions.

But to argue with you is futile. You’re like the person who believes the Earth is flat against irrefutable evidence otherwise. But the problem is you’re saying that because you don’t like the photo, it should not be used. Like the Flat Earth believer who says – since I believe the Earth is flat – you have to teach that in school – oh, and Bubba over there agrees.

So here’s the proof. This is just four of hundreds of articles saying how beautiful she looks. Every “Best of” photo gallery from this event includes Bebe, not to mention all the videos where the interviewer is stunned by how beautiful she looks and can’t stop saying so. It’s not only the finest Journalists, Reporters, and Celebrity photo websites saying this, it’s also the Wikipedia editors of 60 foreign Wikipedia’s. So it’s you against literally millions of other people.

SCENE: Binksternet looking at a car
Binksternet: “That car doesn’t look real”
Toglenn: “Well, it is real.”
Binksternet: “It doesn’t look real to me”
Toglenn: “Well, it is real and it looks real to everyone else”
Binksternet: “I don’t care, it doesn’t look real to me so therefore it isn’t.”
Toglenn: *I give up*
Glenn Francis (talk) 15:09, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

That was a waste of reading time. It's a matter of esthetic opinion, not a test of existence of a car. I don't like fake-looking makeup. I don't like posed shots if there are better action shots, like in this case. I like real women who actually do stuff instead of sit around looking like something. And I don't care whether I'm out of step with others. I don't base my self-worth on the herd mentality. Binksternet (talk) 23:25, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
The current picture is completely fine. And it doesn't matter if you dislike "fake-looking makeup". That's literally what she looks like. And posed shots look better than an at best decent quality photo of her performing in 2016 where her facial features are barely visible. I completely agree with Toglenn. Billiekhalidfan (talk) 23:38, 12 September 2019 (UTC)

Rolling Stone article

I'm confused. Can someone please directly quote this Rolling Stone article actually mentioning the genres hip hop, EDM, R&B, country and alternative rock? I've read it multiple times and I don't see any mention of this. Billiekhalidfan (talk) 20:03, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

Try this out: imagine that the Bebe Rexha biography on Wikipedia is an amalgamation of all the reliably published sources, which is the ideal status. Now imagine that something you find in the written text might or might not serve as a fair representation of the published sources. You can create a little experiment from that: can the text-as-written be supported by reliably published sources? Now you can ask yourself "Am I able to locate and cite these sources?" Binksternet (talk) 23:25, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
So instead of telling me where the article mentions these genres (which it doesn't), you're telling me to find and cite sources for the unsourced genres you keep adding? Billiekhalidfan (talk) 19:11, 14 September 2019 (UTC)

English pronunciation of last name

In every English speaking context she and everyone else pronounces her name as BI-bi RE-ksa and not RAY-jah

Performed some IPA and {{respell}} cleanup. @Besnikur: please watch out how you transcribe English, as /i/ is only unstressed, while /æ/ can never occur at the end of an open syllable (and this is even the final one in the name). Read the help for more. 〜イヴァンスクルージ九十八[IvanScrooge98]会話 16:04, 14 September 2019 (UTC)
@IvanScrooge98: thank you for fixing this. It was definitely a struggle figuring out the IPA rules. I don't think it's necessary to have the Albanian pronunciation. In Albanian there is no ambiguity in how the name is pronounced and the spelling has not been altered for English audiences. It can actually be confusing because the REksa pronunciation is something the artist has chosen for herself and not a proper transliteration of the word. As such it is more similar to the word Mexico, rather than a Spanish name like José (which uses Spanish phonetic rules). Anyway, I don't feel too strongly about it either way. Besnikur (talk) 14:40, 18 September 2019 (UTC)
@Besnikur: you are welcome. Concerning Albanian pronunciation, even though it is unambiguous, since we don’t expect readers to know the spelling rules a foreign language, I would leave it; especially now that we ascertained the English pronunciation differs in how the ⟨xh⟩ digraph is pronounced. All the best, 〜イヴァンスクルージ九十八[IvanScrooge98]会話 14:57, 18 September 2019 (UTC)

You are delusional. She was born in the US, and her parents in Yugoslavia. How on earth can she be called Albanian? Common? Good effort in claiming her Albanian, same as you did with pure Yugoslavian blood George Kastrioti. 2600:1700:36D0:9B0:C48B:1A26:9389:1698 (talk) 23:09, 4 July 2024 (UTC)

Bebe Rexha is Yugoslanian

It is absolutely ridiculous to call her Albanian. Her parents were born in Yugoslavia during a time in which Albania was one of the most isolated countries in the entire world and had absolutely no contact with any other country in the world. Bebe was born in the US or UK. Albanians are absolutely delusional to claim Bebe as Albanian, but it is not surprising, they did the same with George Skanderbeg which has been scientifically proven to be Yugoslavian. How can the English speaking world fall into this travesty? 2600:1700:36D0:9B0:C48B:1A26:9389:1698 (talk) 23:18, 4 July 2024 (UTC)
