Port of Call New Orleans
[edit]IMDb reports this subtitle for the remake, but we need to verify this with a reliable source. If we can, we can move the remake to the (currently redirected) Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans and Bad Lieutenant (1992 film) back to Bad Lieutenant. —Erik (talk • contrib) - 19:25, 29 July 2008 (UTC)
The onscreen title is actually 'The Bad Lieutenant'. I think there's a colon in the subtitle after 'Call'. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.168.45.250 (talk) 17:01, 30 October 2009 (UTC)
- This is correct. I was specifically paying attention for this during the opening title sequence, and it appeared as follows:
The Bad Lieutenant Port of Call: New Orleans
- However, I do believe that most of the marketing material and press have been referring to the film as Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. –Fierce Beaver (talk) 18:42, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
- Six years later, IMDb reports "Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans" as both USA and world-wide English title, while the version with the article is listed only as "USA (promotional title)" Kumagoro-42 18:15, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
Sequel or remake?
[edit]The first section of this article states that it is a sequel to Bad Lieutenant (1992 film) while the production section states that it is a remake. It seems unlikely that this is a sequel but Herzog has stated that it isn't a remake. Can anyone verify? 75.111.221.153 (talk) 18:56, 8 October 2008 (UTC)
- Werner Herzog said this is NOT a remake. Someone please be kind enough to remove the remake references in the article. Herzog said in an interview that he hasn't even heard of or seen the 1992 version. Just a coincidence of title. Lhw1 (talk) 19:07, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
And you believe him? Herzog said that only to upset Ferrara. He saw all the Harmony Korine movies... it's quite unlike he didn't see the original
- It wouldn't be the first director to completely ignore the 'source' material. Frankly, it seems more likely that he's trying to distance the movie from the 'original' than piss Ferrerra off, which is consistent with his desire to change the title. 96.251.63.254 (talk) 09:00, 23 October 2009 (UTC)
Yeah, he said he'd never heard of Ferrara, what a crook, the name bad lieutenant just appeared to him in a german sausage. 01:56, 30 January 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.21.25.153 (talk)
- I believe that the latest interview to the Telegraph solves this issue. Unless someone is comfortable with developing and applying a "quantitative" definition of sequel and/or remake, the classification of the movie should be according the director's statements. Therefore, references to remake or sequel should not be present in the article.Ilidio Martins (talk) 12:09, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- And I wonder whether folks who are making any sort of comparison at all have seen both films. They are utterly, totally, different. Abel Ferrara's film is a spiralling rollercoaster ride to hell, whereas Herzog's is a nodding and winking goof on the police thriller genre. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 131.215.115.31 (talk) 15:57, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
- Agree.

- I'd somehow think, they'd love each others films. Maybe they should just go have a beer together. 85.216.117.19 (talk) 08:16, 9 May 2013 (UTC) It was a remake alright.. a Nick Cage remake of Heath Ledgers Joker character. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.207.116.55 (talk) 02:03, 23 September 2013 (UTC)
Werner Herzog was brought in late as directer, or at least did not originate the concept of this film http://www.comingsoon.net/movies/features/45673-exclusive-the-bad-lieutenant-is-not-a-remake. This is not 'his' film. I think someone needs to find out why this was called "Bad Lieutenant" in the first place. It is likely the producer/s - or whoever owned the rights to the name - but it needs research. Herzog was quoted as saying he tried to get them to change the name, to no avail. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.202.24.164 (talk) 18:28, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
I'd say spiritual successor. MrWii000 (talk) 07:50, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
