4G Square Four Capacity
[edit]Using the advertised bore and stroke of 65 x 75, the actual capacity is 995.89 cc, yet the engine is traditionally described as 995 cc and later as 997 cc. Does anyone have any more info on these dimensions? Seasalt 05:20, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Nickname
[edit]Can anyone verify that the Ariel Square Four was nicknamed the Squariel. This was a common name I heard in the early '70s but for inclusion on the main page we need to find evidence of this (due to Wikipedias sometimes nonsensical verifiability not truth rules). (UTC)
- I have personally heard this as nickname of the bike but, as the bikes have died, so has the name. But if googled, you do get responses for the Squariel as well some strange antenna I'd never seen before. If I find some reference, I'll bung it into the article. New Category for British Motorcycles
[edit]As part of the Motorcycling WikiProject I am working though all the missing articles and stubs for British Bikes. To make things easier to sort out I have created a category for British motorcycles. Please will you add to any British motorcycle pages you find or create. It will also help to keep things organised if you use the Template:Infobox Motorcycle or add it where it is missing. I've linked the Category to the Commons British Motorcycles so you could help with matching pics to articles or adding the missing images to the Commons - take your camera next time you go to a rally! Thanks Tony (talk) 17:49, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
An under developed article
[edit]Given there were so few thou's produced by Britain throughout its considerable motorcycle manufacturing history, I find it surprising (and sad) that this unique motorcycles' article is so small. There is much more that could be said. In the Wiki Commoms Ariel Square 4 there are quite a few images which almost say more than the article.
I chanced upon a nicely restored machine recently which I will replace one of the images on this page with one of mine, and another also - my intention to widen the scope of images to better reflect the nearly 30 year lifespan of this incredible design. If someone with more on an aesthetic eye could make further arrangements would be good.
What would be better would be some more information and history of these notable machines. Having said that, I don't feel confident in bunging on a Stub tag. L-Bit (talk) 04:59, 7 October 2012 (UTC)
1936 to 1949: overheating of rear cylinder heads
[edit]Maybe someone can explain here, and possibly also add to the article, some explanation why the 1940s model was prone to overheating? Im not quite understanding why the rear cylinder heads would overheat? And clarify for me: cylinder HEAD? would overheat? Meaning what: overhead valves overheated? or did the cylinder itself overhead? Marc S., Dania fl. 206.192.35.125 (talk) 15:16, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
- Same problem as most air-cooled motorbikes with longitudinal cylinders (including Vs). The front cylinder is cooled by ram air from the bike's motion, the cylinder(s) behind don't see this supply of fresh, cold air, they only get warm pre-heated air. One bike that mostly avoided this was the Vincent twin, because the two cylinders were offset sideways from each other. As to what overheats first, then that depends on the bike. Some overheat their heads and blow the head gasket, some start to burn exhaust valves, a few will start to get pistons jamming or scoring in the bore. Andy Dingley (talk) 15:27, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
