The Anson Borough Homes were significant as one of the initial public housing projects in Charleston and an example of federal funding of housing projects in the pre-WWII era of Depression Era spending. More importantly, they remain important because of their racial story: As noted, the housing was built during Segregation only for Black residents while others were built for White residents. In the 21st century, that continued to be important. Several people (including one cited) have pointed to the fact that the City demolished a historically Black housing project over environmental concerns and yet immediately went about redeveloping the same land through a private developer into high end condos and office space.
