Criticism
[edit]While there was (and is) Criticism of the D&D alignment system the only reliable article I am aware of on the matter is Dragon #101's "For King and Country" which at September 1985 is really really old. Now there was a forum post by a Wizards of the Coast representative on the matter but that was back in 2008 and the thread was delated (and Internet archive didn't capture it). Yes, I would prefer something a lot more recent that was reliable but one must take what one has got.--174.99.238.22 (talk) 05:38, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
- That seemed like some decent out of universe stuff. Are we sure we want to remove it? https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Alignment_%28Dungeons_%26_Dragons%29&type=revision&diff=943730528&oldid=943725027 Peregrine Fisher (talk) 20:15, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- I'm thinking about fixing this article up, so anyone (bueller bueller) who want's to talk here should know that I'm listening. At least for a while. Peregrine Fisher (talk) 20:19, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- What struck me about the material there is that is was really that the source was an option piece by one writer (who was not Gygax or any game designer as far as I could tell) where he was critical not of the idea of the alignment system, but of how other players applied it to their games. Yeah, it got picked up and published by Dragon, but it was purely an Op-Ed type submission, not any sort of formal endorsement by the game's publisher, and even then it was, as I said, just the writer's personal opinion on how it was used, not a criticism of the system itself. It has a strong "badwrongfun" vibe, and wasn't particularly notable. We'd need a broader base, and preferably tertiary commentary on the criticism to really include it. oknazevad (talk) 22:44, 3 March 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply. I'll have to think about it. Peregrine Fisher (talk) 03:24, 5 March 2020 (UTC)

Alternative system with 25 alignments?
[edit]Over the years a new system with 25 instead of 9 has been made up. Many see it as more accurate. But I am not sure if it should be added here. MrLW97 (talk) 21:28, 25 May 2020 (UTC)

Archetypes needed
[edit]I had added a list of archetypes from the 3.5e Player's Handbook in this edit but it was reverted by User:Oknazevad.
No policy-based rationale was given for this removal. My reason for including it was based on our official guideline WP:REALWORLD. The current list of alignments names examples of in-universe monsters and races, and a reader unfamiliar with the subject would not understand why they are listed or what connections they have to the alignment.
The list of archetypes is a way to connect the alignments to real-world examples, in an attempt to comply with WP:REALWORLD. ~Anachronist (talk) 17:21, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
- We don't need a whole separate section for them. They could and should be better integrated into the descriptions of the alignments in that section. oknazevad (talk) 18:46, 4 November 2021 (UTC)
- All right then. I have added them individually to each alignment. ~Anachronist (talk) 14:24, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- User:Oknazevad does that work better now? 8.37.179.254 (talk) 20:31, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Better, but as a sentence would work even better instead. oknazevad (talk) 09:38, 6 November 2021 (UTC)
