I have checked this page against [1], and found that at least the "war cry" information is an obvious copy/paste in violation of copyright. I have reverted to a version previoius to this additon (December 6). --Alvestrand 16:42, 13 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Third Afghan War battle honour

[edit]

I've deleted the lines about the Afghanistan NWF 1919 battle honour being awarded until it can be cited. Other Indian Army and Indian States Forces units awarded this honour were all awarded in 1926/7 by which time it was not policy to award honours to disbanded units. The award to other units was made in 3 Governor General's orders and I haven't seen 11th Rifles mentioned in any of them. Had the unit still existed I'm sure the award would have been made but as it stands I don't think it was. NtheP (talk) 18:43, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Battle Honours of the British and Commonwealth Armies (p. 310) confirms that the Third Afghan War honour ("Afghanistan 1919") was awarded to all eleven of the Gurkha regiments - 1st through 11th. Shimgray | talk | 19:05, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
...and just for the record, I've checked and they definitely don't seem to have been awarded the general honour for either Palestine or Mesopotamia. Shimgray | talk | 19:37, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's Baker's book? Rodger's Battle Honours of the British and Commonwealth Land Forces (almost same name of book confusingly) doesn't mention the 11th and does make specific mention that it was not policy to award honours to disbanded units. Does Baker quote the Governor General's order numbers? NtheP (talk) 19:48, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Rodger's does acknowledge Baker in the bibliography NtheP (talk) 19:52, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is Baker, yes. He gives the honour as also awarded to 50th Kumaon Rifles (disb. 1923), 112nd (disb. 1923), and 150th to 154th Infantry inclusive (all disb. 1922). No specific sources cited, though.
Incidentally, he also notes that the 11th Gurkhas also saw service in Iraq 1920/1 and Waziristan 1919-1923, neither of which were honoured. Shimgray | talk | 20:16, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please use the talk page to seek consensus. I disagree with your claims and require you to present RS's to back them up. Myopia123 (talk) 00:26, 26 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Require? Hmm.
Gaylor, John (1996). Sons of John Company: The Indian and Pakistan Armies 1903–1991 (2nd ed.). Tunbridge Wells: Parapress. ISBN 1-898594-41-4. {{cite book}}: Invalid |ref=harv (help) Page 246 "The 11th Gurkha Rifles raised in 1948 by India, following partition, utilized the same badge but there was no intention to claim descent from the Great War-raised regiment" and page 297 "The present regiment has no connection with the British-raised 11th Gurkha Rifles which came into being in the Great War and was disbanded shortly afterwards."
So you're saying this only applies to 11 Gurkha? Because my understanding is that 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9 AND 11 Gurkha were all in the British Indian Army and transferred to the Indian Army after Independence. And yes, I can require. There is a content dispute and this is an effort to build consensus. Myopia123 (talk) 06:19, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
No, this only applies to the 11th Gorkha Rifles because it was not in the British Indian Army and did not transfer to the Indian Army at Independence. It was formed in the Indian Army post-1947. Hamish59 (talk) 13:03, 27 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Authenticity of Website

[edit]

The web address given in the wiki uses an ORG domain website. Which isn't the regular domain used by Indian Army. I suggest you to re-validate the web address. Indian Army, and Indian Airforce uses NIC.IN domain, and Navy uses GOV.IN. But ORG isn't restricted for government entities only.
