- 1961 - Typhoon Nancy (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 345 km/h (215 mph), the highest maximum sustained winds of any tropical cyclone. Nancy also held its Category 5 intensity for the most number of days with 5½ days. Moreover it killed over 170 people in Japan and caused about $500 million in damages.
- 1989 - Typhoon Sarah makes landfall over Taiwan as a devastating typhoon. Fatalities from Sarah were 71 and damages totaled up to 4.3 billion in New Taiwan Dollar. (US$175.3 million).
