September 1
- 1962 - Typhoon Wanda hit Hong Kong, killing 434 people there.
- 1984 - Typhoon Ike made landfall in the southeastern Philippines with winds of 230 km/h (145 mph). Ike killed between 1,000 and 3,000 people in the Philippines and China.
- 2019 - Hurricane Dorian (pictured) reached peak intensity as a Category 5 hurricane, with peak 1-minute sustained winds of 295 km/h (185 mph), while making landfall over the Bahamas. On September 2, Dorian stalled over Grand Bahama island at Category 5 intensity for a day, causing catastrophic destruction. Dorian was known for being the strongest hurricane to make landfall and impact the islands on record.
September 2
- 1937 - A powerful typhoon struck Hong Kong, killing over 11,000 people in the British colony.
- 1985 - Hurricane Elena (pictured) made landfall as a major hurricane over southern United States, killing 9 and causing $1.3 billion in damages.
September 3
- 1935 - The 1935 Labor Day hurricane passed over the Florida Keys as a Category 5 hurricane with a central pressure of 892 hPa (mbar), making it the most intense Atlantic hurricane to make landfall in the United States measured solely by landfall intensity. It caused over $40 million of damage in Florida.
- 1988 - Hurricane Uleki (pictured) reaches peak intensity at Category 3 major hurricane intensity to the south of Hawaii where two people were also killed.
September 4
- 1930 - The 1930 Dominican Republic hurricane made landfall on the island of Hispaniola, killing between 2,000 and 8,000 people, mostly in the Dominican Republic.
- 2007 - Hurricane Felix (pictured) made landfall over in Belize as a Category 5 major hurricane, with winds of 260 km/h (160 mph). Total fatalities were reported at 130 people and damages up to $720 million (2007 USD).
September 5
- 1964 - Typhoon Ruby struck Hong Kong with wind gusts of 268 km/h (166 mph), killing 734 people across southeastern China.
- 2004 - Hurricane Frances made landfall in southern Florida just three weeks after Hurricane Charley had affected the state. Frances caused about $10 billion in damages.
- 2017 - Hurricane Irma (pictured) reached peak intensity, with winds of 180 miles per hour (290 km/h), the highest-recorded winds in the open Atlantic, while making landfall in Barbuda. Overall, after impacting the Caribbean and Florida, Irma killed a total of 109 people, and caused a total of $64.76 billion (2018 USD) in damages, becoming the fifth-costliest hurricane on record.
September 6
- 1776 - The 1776 Pointe-à-Pitre hurricane made landfall in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe killing about 6,000 people.
- 2021 - A rapidly-developing system at the time, Tropical Storm Conson (pictured) made landfall over Eastern Samar, Philippines. Conson killed 22 people in total.
September 7
- 1991 - Hurricane Claudette reaches peak intensity as a Category 4 major hurricane with winds of 215 km/h (130 mph) and a minimum pressure of 944 hPa.
- 2004 - Hurricane Ivan (pictured) passed just to the north of Grenada causing over $800 million of damage. Ivan caused a total of over $16 billion of damage, mostly in the United States.
September 8
- 1900 - The 1900 Galveston hurricane (track pictured) struck Galveston, Texas, with winds in excess of 240 km/h (150 mph). The hurricane is the deadliest in the history of the United States and killed over 8,000 people.
- 1987 - Typhoon Gerald reaches peak intensity with 10-minute winds of 150 km/h (90 mph) and a minimum pressure of 950 hPa before making landfall in Taiwan which killed 127 people in total.
September 9
- 1965 - Hurricane Betsy made landfall in southeast Louisiana as a Category 3 hurricane, flooding much of New Orleans. Betsy caused over $1 billion of damages.
- 1985 - Hurricane Rick (pictured) becomes a Category 4 major hurricane with winds of 230 km/h (145 mph) and a pressure of 951 hPa.
- 2015 - Tropical Storm Etau makes landfall in Honshu bringing extreme flooding with damages nearly up to $100 million.
September 10
- 2003 - Typhoon Maemi (pictured) reached its peak intensity to the east of Taiwan. Maemi killed 115 people and caused over $4 billion in damage, mostly in South Korea.
- 2008 - Typhoon Sinlaku reaches peak intensity as a Category 4 with 10-minute winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) while to the east of Taiwan. In total, Sinlaku caused about $1.1 billion in damages and killed 14 people, directly or indirectly.
September 11,
- 1992 - Hurricane Iniki (pictured) made landfall on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with winds of 225 km/h (140 mph). Iniki became the strongest and costliest hurricane to strike the state, causing $1.8 billion of damage.
- 2002 - Hurricane Gustav reaches its peak intensity as a Category 2 hurricane. Gustav was the first hurricane of that season, therefore becoming one of the latest first hurricanes to form. It was also the first storm to be named as a subtropical cyclone.
September 12,
- 1961 - Typhoon Nancy (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 345 km/h (215 mph), the highest maximum sustained winds of any tropical cyclone. Nancy also held its Category 5 intensity for the most number of days with 5½ days. Moreover it killed over 170 people in Japan and caused about $500 million in damages.
- 1989 - Typhoon Sarah makes landfall over Taiwan as a devastating typhoon. Fatalities from Sarah were 71 and damages totaled up to 4.3 billion in New Taiwan Dollar. (US$175.3 million).
September 13,
- 1982 - Typhoon Irving (pictured) makes landfall over Guangdong. Throughout its lifetime, it killed about 49 people in total.
- 1997 - Hurricane Linda became the second strongest Pacific hurricane ever recorded with a pressure of 902 hPa off the Mexican coast.
- 2004 - Tropical Storm Haima makes landfall in Shanghai where damages were only moderate. It was classified as a subtropical storm by the JTWC.
September 14,
- 1988 - Hurricane Gilbert reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 888 hPa (mbar) to the south of the Cayman Islands. Gilbert killed over 300 people throughout the Caribbean.
- 2007 - After landfall, Hurricane Humberto rapidly diminishes after causing $50 million damages over Texas.
- 2014 - Hurricane Odile (pictured) reaches its peak intensity as a intense Category 4 just before making landfall in Baja California as it damaged a total of $1.22 billion.
September 15,
- 1995 - Hurricane Ismael made landfall in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico as a minimal hurricane. Ismael killed 116 people and caused $26 million of damage.
- 2006 - Typhoon Shanshan (pictured) reaches its peak intensity with 10-minute winds of 205 km/h (125 mph) and a minimum pressure of 919 hPa. Shanshan killed 11 people and caused $2.5 billion in South Korea and Japan.
September 16,
- 1928 - The 1928 Okeechobee hurricane made landfall in Florida with a central pressure of 929 hPa (mbar). Over 2,500 people were killed in Florida, mostly in the Lake Okeechobee area.
- 1999 - Hurricane Floyd makes landfall over in North Carolina after causing about $6.9 billion in the Bahamas.
- 2013 - Typhoon Man-yi (pictured) makes landfall over in Japan. The JTWC only classified it as a tropical storm, though.
September 17
- 1945 - Typhoon Ida struck Japan, killing 2,473 people.
- 1959 - Typhoon Sarah made landfall near Busan, South Korea, leaving over 700,000 people homeless in the country, and killing 2,000 people along the storm's path.
- 1991 - Tropical Storm Ignacio affected Southwestern Mexico and killed 23 people.
- 2004 - Hurricane Jeanne passed over Hispaniola, bringing heavy rain to the island. The rains caused severe flooding in Haiti, killing over 3,000 people.
- 2010 - Hurricane Karl (pictured) reached Category 3 intensity where it made landfall over in Veracruz. Karl caused $3.9 billion in damages and killed 22.
September 18
- 2013 - Hurricane Manuel (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 1 with winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) with a minimum pressure of 983 hPa. Manuel made landfall near Culiacán with extreme impacts killing 123 people and damages of $4.2 billion. It became the costliest hurricane in the East Pacific.
- 2020 - Subtropical Storm Alpha made landfall in mainland Portugal, the first to do so. The storm costed €20 million (US$24.2 million) in damages.
September 19,
- 1974 - Hurricane Fifi–Orlene made landfall in Belize as a Category 2 hurricane. Fifi killed over 10,000 people, making it one of the deadliest hurricanes on record.
- 2010 - Typhoon Fanapi (pictured) makes landfall in Hualien County in Taiwan where it caused 5 deaths and NT$5 billion (US$158 million) over in the country. Though total damages during its track nearly reached US$900 million with deaths up to 80.
September 20,
- 1967 - Hurricane Beulah made landfall in Texas just north of the Rio Grande. Beulah caused severe flooding in the state with the resulting damage exceeding $1 billion.
- 1999 - Hurricane Gert (pictured) passes the island of Bermuda as a weakening Category 3 major hurricane. In its lifetime, Gert killed only 2 people with minor damages.
- 2017 - Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island of Puerto Rico as a high-end Category 4 major hurricane, devastating the island. The hurricane caused the deaths of 2,975 people total in Puerto Rico, from both direct and indirect causes, and also caused at least $90 billion dollars (2017 USD) in damage on the island territory. Maria more than 35 inches (90 cm) of rain in some areas on Puerto Rico.
September 21
- 1934 - Mainland Japan's stronger-ever typhoon, known as the Muroto typhoon (damage pictured), killed 3,066 people and left US$300 million in damage, with 200,000&bsp;people left homeless.
- 1938 - A hurricane known as the Long Island Express hit Long Island, New York as a Category 3 hurricane with a central pressure of 946 hPa (mbar). The hurricane killed between 500 and 700 people in New England.
September 22,
- 1986 - Hurricane Newton makes landfall near Cabo San Lucas.
- 1989 - Hurricane Hugo (pictured) made landfall in South Carolina with 220 km/h (140 mph) winds. Hugo caused over $10 billion of damage and killed 76 people.
- 2007 - Tropical Depression Ten makes landfall over in southeastern Alabama and caused total damages of $6.3 million.
September 23
- 1874 - A typhoon struck Hong Kong, killing 17,000 people.
- 1983 - Typhoon Forrest explosively intensified into a Category 5 super typhoon. Forrest became the fastest intensifying cyclone with a 100 hPa drop in 24 hours.
- 1987 - Hurricane Otis (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 3 major hurricane with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph).
- 1998 - Hurricane Georges passed over the Windward Passage and made landfall in Cuba just east of Guantánamo Bay. Georges killed over 600 people throughout the Caribbean, mostly on the island of Hispaniola.
September 24,
- 2005 - Hurricane Rita (pictured) made landfall in Sabine Pass, Port Arthur, Texas with winds of 185 km/h (115 mph). Rita prompted massive evacuations and caused over $10 billion in damage.
- 2008 - Typhoon Hagupit makes landfall to the southwest of Hong Kong. Total damages from Hagupit were marked at $1 billion and killed 102 people in total.
September 25
- 1939 - The 1939 California tropical storm struck California as a tropical storm, becoming one of only few tropical cyclones ever recorded to make landfall in the state. The storm killed 45 people.
- 1992 - Tropical Storm Danielle (pictured) reaches peak intensity with winds of 100 km/h (65 mph) before landfall in North Carolina where it killed only two people.
September 26
- 1958 - Typhoon Ida struck southeastern Honshu, killing 1,269 people.
- 1959 - Typhoon Vera made landfall on the coast of Honshu, Japan with winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), killing over 5,000 people to become one of Japan's deadliest tropical cyclones on record. Vera left 1.5 million people homeless, with damage estimated at US$261 million.
- 2009 - Tropical Storm Ketsana (pictured) devastated Luzon, Philippines with extreme flooding and killed more than 600 people and damages up to ₱11 billion (US$230 million). It was also recognized as the most devastating typhoon to strike Metro Manila since 1970.
September 27
- 1991 - Typhoon Mireille (pictured) hits southwestern Japan with winds of 165 km/h (105 mph). Mireille caused over US$10 billion in damages, making it the second costliest typhoon on record. 64 people were also killed by the typhoon.
- 2006 - Typhoon Xangsane devastates the Philippines after killing 197 people and $118 million damages in that country alone.
September 28
- 1955 - Hurricane Janet made landfall on the Yucatán Peninsula as a Category 5 hurricane. Janet killed over 500 people in both Mexico and British Honduras (now Belize).
- 2015 - Typhoon Dujuan (pictured) reaches peak intensity with a pressure of 925 hPa just before impacting Taiwan and East China with damages up to $660 million.
September 29
- 1966 - Hurricane Inez made landfall in southern Hispaniola shortly after attaining peak intensity. Inez killed over 1,000 people.
- 2008 - Subtropcial Storm Laura (pictured) develops from an extratropical cyclone to the west of Azores. Laura was classified as a tropical storm thereafter.
September 30
- 1982 - Hurricane Paul made landfall in the Mexican state of Sinaloa with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h (100 mph), killing over 1,000 people across Mexico and Central America.
- 1992 - As the longest-living tropical cyclone in the East Pacific, Hurricane Tina (pictured) reaches peak intensity with winds of 240 km/h (150 mph) and a minimum pressure of 932 hPa.
